Big Pharma’s Supreme Phriends: in Florida and a few other states, low-level drug pushers are getting charged with first-degree myureder for causing the death of their client-victims. In Oklahoma, pharmaceuticals get a big pass for causing the deaths of tens of thousands a year: “Oklahoma’s highest court on Tuesday threw out a 2019 ruling that required Johnson & Johnson to pay the state $465 million for its role in the opioid epidemic. It was the second time this month that a court has invalidated a key legal strategy used by plaintiffs in thousands of cases attempting to hold the pharmaceutical industry responsible for the crisis,” The Times reports. “The Oklahoma Supreme Court, 5-1, rejected the state’s argument that the company violated “public nuisance” laws by aggressively overstating the benefits of its prescription opioid painkillers and downplaying the dangers.”

“The day before my sister’s pretend wedding, the family gathered in Maine for our annual meeting, at my grandfather’s island house, so he could tell us how much of a disappointment we’d been. Dressed like a clam digger in rubber boots, filthy canvas pants, and an old sweatshirt full of pipe ash holes, he rose from his wing chair and leveraged himself to his feet with his cane. Stains extended from his collar to his knees, because at mealtimes he used himself as a plate. Like other monarchs, he may have confused menace with majesty and mistaken the wary looks of his subjects, cowering in the wicker, for devoted affection. He delivered his judgment not in words but through his leaky blue eyes, which lingered on each one of us before coming to rest on my sister.”

–From Jason Brown, “A Faithful but Melancholy Account of Several Barbarities Lately Committed,” in the Sewanee Review, December 2019.

    Concerning the cartoon.

Classic process of “checks -and-balances” in action. Now if we could put a stop to the Collusion and Conflicts of Interest between the Executive and Legislative branches of government.

Politicians are more concerned with doing something than doing the right thing. Thank god we have three branches of government and the checks and balances between them.

Thank you, Pogo. I suppose it should be added that you are not teaching CRT. Only bringing to light a little much needed history. In my view, investing in human potential is a very rewarding effort.
