Today at the Editor’s glance: Something to keep in mind as you’re shopping today: “Many employers in industries, like retail, that have mandated vaccines at corporate offices have not required them for frontline workers, sharing concerns about challenges in hiring,” the New York Times reports. ” But those workers, including about four million at stores, are among the most vulnerable. They interact frequently with the public and are less likely to be vaccinated themselves. Mandates at Tyson, United Airlines and several health care companies indicate that when faced with the prospect of losing their job, employees most frequently choose inoculation. […] The panic and precautions tied to Covid-19 have played out at retail stores throughout the pandemic and ensnared their workers. […] Retailers are betting that consumers will be comfortable shopping in stores, where foot traffic is already higher than in 2020, regardless of the industry’s efforts to fight the new vaccination and testing requirements. And for those who are concerned about the lack of vaccinations, the companies have bolstered their e-commerce operations and curbside pickup offerings in the past year, though in-store shopping often leads to more purchases and fewer returns.” Most government offices and schools are closed today. A note on garbage collection in Palm Coast: Waste Pro was closed on Thanksgiving Day. For those with a pick up on that day, the collection will occur on Saturday, November 27. There will be no change to regularly scheduled collections on Friday, November 26. This year, both Christmas Day and New Year’s Day fall on a Saturday so there will no schedule adjustments for garbage collection on those two holidays. Thanksgiving meals: In Flagler Beach Thursday, Mayor Suzie Johnston and many volunteers gathered at beachfront Grille to collect 100 meals prepared and donated by Beachfront Grill for the needy. You know just because your vaccinated does not mean you can’t get covid from someone else that’s already vaccinated, there are more people dying from covid now that have been vaccinated then all those that died in 2020 that were not vaccinated. Several doctors have said this also World Health Organization also said there are so so many people dying that are vaccinated. All this unvaccinated people are dangerous is just absurd everyone can get covid from everyone even those that are vaccinated.

The Wanda comment should not have been approved; Jim is right, it is false. Now that it has been out there for a while, a correction is in order: more people have died in 2021, since the vaccine became available, than in 2020, but the overwhelming majority of those who have died were unvaccinated, and victims of the Delta variant.

Wanda’s comment triggered a question that a brief Google search did not answer. In light of the early warnings about the omicron variant of the SARS-Cov-2 virus, and in light of the dominance of the delta variant of the SARS-Cov-2 virus among those currently testing positive for SARS-Cov-2, has the original Wuhan virus strain died out? If it has died out, and if the only versions that are still passing from person to person are defined as variants, what does that truly mean? Is it reasonable to argue that had we as a nation immediately and universally accepted vaccinations at a rate above 90%, could we have knocked out the entire virus before the variants took their now dominant position? Does it mean that we have defeated the Wuhan version of SARS-Cov-2, even with the more limited acceptance of the three available vaccines among our populace?
One thing does appear certain. Wanda is wandering through life fooling herself.

I did find a CDC site that partially answered my questions, but its information does not support my taking the position that the Wuhan version of SARS-Cov-2 has been completely defeated in America. A November 19, 2021 CDC report on examination of samples taken from positive tests for SARS-Cov-2 reflects a finding that over 99% of the new cases in America fall into the delta variant category. That does not establish that the Wuhan version has been completely eliminated in this country, as it could still be in the miniscule less than 1% category of non-delta viruses that is still out there.
