Wednesday Briefing: Flagler Beach land Regulations, Pilsners for Polio, Stetson Guitar Ensemble

To support the fight against cancer, McDonald’s at Palm Coast Landing near Town Center, 5190 E. Moody Blvd., hosted an instore fundraiser to support the AdventHealth Palm Coast Foundation. On Oct. 29, the McDonald’s location donated a percentage of sales between the dinner hours of 5 to 7 p.m. All in all, the local McDonald’s team donated $500 to support the AdventHealth Palm Coast Judith C. Macko Cancer Resource Center. Opened in February 2010, the Judith C. Macko Cancer Resource Center offers an extensive collection of books, brochures, articles and videotapes about cancer. Cancer patients and their families, and community members, such as health professionals, students, and teachers, are welcome to use all of the library’s free services. In addition, cancer patients can receive wigs, head coverings, mastectomy bras and prostheses, all free of charge. (AdventHealth)

The Blue Power 2020 Action Forum, 12:30 p.m. at the African American Cultural Society, 4422 N. US HWY 1, Palm Coast (just north of Whiteview Parkway). The Rotary Club of Palm Coast will host Pilsners for Polio and Karaoke for a Cause in support of Rotary International’s 27-year mission to eradicate the crippling childhood disease at the Ocean City Beach Grill and Cantina, 301 Moody Blvd in Flagler Beach, starting at 5 p.m. Guests can enjoy a full bar and great food, along with Karaoke for a Cause, a friendly competition featuring the Rotary Karaoke Challenge, presented by Thomas Media Solutions. The event features the Karaoke competition, prize drawings, 50/50 raffle and Karaoke Challenge. All proceeds from the event will be dedicated to PolioPlus. A donation of $5 is requested to participate in Karaoke and a trophy will be awarded at the conclusion of the event.

Stetson Guitar Ensemble: Stephen Robinson, director. The Stetson University Guitar Ensemble presents a program of various combinations of guitars performing works by Karl Jenkins, Bryan Johanson, Luc Lévesque, Antonín Dvorák and Modest Mussorgsky. Mark Houghton’s most recent composition, “Guitarchestra No 10, Festive” for 11 guitars also will be featured during the performance. 7:30 p.m. Lee Chapel in Elizabeth Hall, 421 N. Flagler Beach Is Open For Business: A1A Construction Update:

FlaglerLive is providing weekly updates to year-long construction on and near State Road A1A in Flagler Beach as the Florida Department of Transportation rebuilds a 1.5-mile segment from South 9th Street to South 22nd Street, and builds a sea wall at the north end of town. These updates are provided through DOT or local officials. If you have any relevant information or images, you’re welcome to email them to the editor here.

Segments 1 and 3 are complete.

Segment 2 (South 22nd Street to South 9th Street):

The drainage installation is complete, and work on the new median curbs and flumes is continuing and approximately 70% complete. Work on the southbound roadway continues as the contractor has placed limerock base to 18th street and will continue moving north. The traffic separator is taking shape and is over 50% complete.

Segment 3 (North 18th Street to Osprey Drive):

Wall construction is complete, and walkover construction will begin once Hurricane Season is over.

HOUSE TAKES AIM AT SUNSCREEN BANS: The House Health Quality Subcommittee will consider a bill (HB 113), filed by Rep. Spencer Roach, R-North Fort Myers, that would prevent local governments from banning over-the-counter sales of sunscreen. The bill stems, at least in part, from a decision by Key West to ban certain types of sunscreen because of concerns that chemicals in the substances were damaging coral reefs. (Wednesday, 9:30 a.m., 306 House Office Building, the Capitol.)

HOUSE CONSIDERS FIREWORKS ISSUE: The House Business & Professions Subcommittee will consider a bill (HB 65), filed by Rep. Ana Maria Rodriguez, R-Doral, that would make the use of fireworks legal on Independence Day, Memorial Day and New Year’s Eve. Under current law, most fireworks are generally illegal for Floridians to buy. But people can buy and use fireworks if they sign a waiver saying they will use the devices for certain agricultural purposes. (Wednesday, 1 p.m., 212 Knott Building, the Capitol.)

COURT TAKES UP FELONS QUESTION: The Florida Supreme Court will hear arguments in four cases, including a request by Gov. Ron DeSantis for an advisory opinion about a 2018 constitutional amendment that restored voting rights to felons who have fulfilled their sentences. DeSantis asked the Supreme Court about whether the amendment requires “the satisfaction of all legal financial obligations — namely fees, fines and restitution ordered by the court as part of a felony sentence that would otherwise render a convicted felon ineligible to vote.” The Legislature this spring passed a law to carry out the amendment, but the law drew federal court challenges because it requires felons to pay “legal financial obligations,” such as restitution, fines and fees, to get their rights restored. Civil-rights and voting-rights organizations have compared the financial requirements in the law to a “poll tax.” (Wednesday, 9 a.m., Florida Supreme Court, 500 South Duval St., Tallahassee.)

FEA CONTINUES BUS TOUR: The Florida Education Association will continue a bus tour focused on calling for increased education funding. (Wednesday, 2 p.m., Pinellas Classroom Teachers Association, 650 Seminole Blvd., Largo. Also, 6 p.m., Hillsborough Classroom Teachers Association, 3102 North Habana Ave., Tampa.)

PARTY LEADERS DISCUSS 2020 ELECTIONS: State Republican Chairman Joe Gruters and state Democratic Chairwoman Terrie Rizzo are slated to take part in a Tampa Bay Times “political conversation” about the 2020 elections. (Wednesday, 6:30 p.m., Chihuly Collection, 720 Central Ave., St. Petersburg.)
