Execution vigil and protest: Gov. Rick Scott has scheduled the execution of Mark Asay to take place at 6 p.m. Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Daytona Beach is organizing a bus trip to Starke to pray for Asay and victims killed, Robert Lee Booker and Robert McDowell. The bus leaves the parking lot Our Lady of Lourdes, 201 University Blvd, Daytona Beach, at 2:30 p.m. There is a 3 p.m. pick up at Destination Daytona, 1635 U.S. Highway 1, Ormond Beach. And in Palm Coast, there is a 3:30 p.m. pick-up at at Winn Dixie in the Flagler Plaza on State Road 100. The church says: “Our prayerful presence makes the statement that all killing is wrong and the State of Florida does not kill in our name. We encourage all, no matter their personal feelings about capital punishment, to join us as believers in the sanctity of all life. Traffic delays in officer’s funeral: Drivers in Osceola and Orange County should expect traffic delays for the funeral procession for Kissimmee Police Officer Matthew Baxter and Sergeant Sam Howard on August 24, 2017. Motorists should expect heavy delays on the northbound Turnpike, from the Kissimmee area, beginning at 8:00 am. Eastbound I-4 will also be affected. After the funeral services are complete, drivers can expect heavy delays, as the funeral procession travels northbound, on John Young Parkway to SR 408 and to the burial site. These roads will be affected for an unknown amount of time. Motorists need to plan alternate routes to avoid delays.
Seniors with diabetes invited to participate in free class at Wickline: Seniors with diabetes are invited to participate in a free six-week class to be held at the George Wickline Senior Center in Flagler Beach. The class runs from 2 to 4:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, September 12 through October 17. ElderSource and the Northeast Florida Area Health Education Center are sponsoring the series of workshops. The program is free, but pre-registration is required. It is open to those who are 60 years or older, and who have diabetes. Those interested should call the Northeast Florida Area Health Education Center at 877-784-8486. Class dates are September 12, 19 and 26, and October 3, 10 and 17. The George Wickline Senior Center is at 800 S. Daytona Avenue, Flagler Beach. For more information about the Flagler County Senior Services Department go to www.flaglercounty.org/senior_services.
