in nevada david thomson“Miles of videotape come in every day from all over Las Vegas, not just the cameras that record transactions and missed meetings in the public places, but the cameras that watch over all the gaming tables and can call back the fall of cards, the shy distress of some players, and the deft cheating of others. The cans of surveillance, supposedly, are catalogued and stored in the warehouses on the edge of the city. So many minutes; so much short-lived action and excitement; and always, the steady, listless beat of time peeling away. And so in the crushed spirit of a watched society, every mirror, every glass surface becomes the front for a clerical scrutiny — a little man, eating a sandwich, absorbing and being bored by your nakedness.”

–David Thompson, from “In Nevada” (1999)

Cultural Coda:

Mozart’s Only String Trio, K563

From WQXR: “Over the course of his short life, Mozart composed an incredible amount of music. But he didn’t write for all ensembles equally. Trumpets, for instance, freaked him out, and so there’s a dearth of music for that instrument in his catalog. He only wrote one (that we know of) and it’s since been lost. While we’re sure he didn’t harbor a fear of string instruments, he only managed to complete one string trio, too.”
