School safety: Flagler Schools Superintendent James Tager, School Board Chairman Trevor Tucker, Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly and other officials hold a joint press briefing at 11 a.m in front of Buddy Taylor Middle School, 4500 Belle Terre Parkway, Palm Coast, to discuss updated security measures and proposed changes following the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland.

The Flagler Beach City Commission meets at 4:30 p.m. at City Hall for a reorganization meeting, swearing in new member, Eric Cooley, the owner of the 7-Eleven on A1A, who was elected without opposition last year when he was the only candidate to file to replace Joy McGrew, who opted not to run again. The commission then meets again at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall. Commissioners will consider any necessary action regarding a request for a possible lease extension for the lease agreement between the Montessori School and the city. The city is planning to renovate and occupy the school this summer with its building department, engineering services and other offices. Commissioners will also formalize an agreement between the city and the state Department of Transportation for the reconstruction of State Road A1A’s south portion, which was damaged by Hurricane Matthew, and the relocation of utilities during construction.

Larry Shue’s “The Nerd” is staged at the Flagler Playhouse, Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m., Sunday at 2 p.m. Set in Terra Haute, Indiana in 1979, The Nerd centers on the hilarious dilemma of a young architect who is visited by the man who saved his life in Vietnam, but whom he has never met. The guest turns out to be an extremely inept and hopelessly stupid nerd who turns our hero’s life upside down, and then outstays his welcome beyond endurance. Settlers of the Spanish Frontier: Canary Islanders in Colonial Florida: Diana Reigelsperger, professor of history at Seminole State College, will be giving a fascinating and informative program on the unique history of 18th century Canary Island colonialism in Florida Reigelsperger’s talk will explore the motivations of the settlers, the agency of their arrival, and how their presence impacted their new home. Light refreshments will be served. At the Historic Pool Area (Café’ Alcazar) of the Lightner Museum, 75 King St, St. Augustine, accessed by side entrances located off Grenada and Cordova Streets. Doors open at 6 p.m. for refreshments and seating; the lecture begins promptly at 6:30 p.m. Seating is based on a first-come, first-serve basis. Be sure to purchase your tickets early. City of Palm Coast’s Find Your Florida 2018 Photo Contest begins: The City of Palm Coast will hold the Find Your Florida 2018 Photography Contest now through May 31. Prizes will be awarded, and photographs submitted for the contest will be used by the City for marketing, promotional and public relations purposes. The theme of the contest is “Find Your Florida in Palm Coast.” Winning photos will illustrate what makes Palm Coast special. Examples of what the City is looking for include: family fun at our festivals, sports activities, cultural clubs and organizations, and on our parks and trails; active lifestyle such as walking/running/bicycling, sports, swimming, fishing and boating; and nature such as beautiful landscapes, birds and other wildlife, and waterways. The City wants to share what’s special about Palm Coast. First, second and third place will be awarded, plus special awards for a new people-focused category, “Palm Coasters” and for the Best Photo taken by a youth age 17 and younger. For the first time, a concurrent photo contest on Instagram will be held, and prizes will be awarded for the best Instagram photos, too. To enter via Instagram, be sure to use the hashtag “PCpics2018” and include the photo location (where in Palm Coast?) in the caption. Gift certificates to local businesses will be awarded in the following amounts: First Prize, $200; Second Prize, $100; Third Prize, $50; Instagram winner, $100; “Palm Coasters” winner, $50; and Youth winner, $50. Gift certificates will be offered to a variety of businesses, and winners will be able to select from the list. In addition, honorable mentions will be awarded as determined by the judges. Winning photographs will be displayed on the City’s website, and winning photographers will be recognized at a meeting of the Palm Coast City Council. Photographers may submit up to 20 entries. It is free to enter. Entries must be submitted no later than midnight May 31, 2018. Photographs submitted for the contest must be taken in the City of Palm Coast. The photographs will be used by the City for marketing, promotional and public relations purposes such as publications, videos and websites, and at City facilities, to promote the City of Palm Coast.
