robert frost“Since last I saw you I have come to the conclusion that style in prose or verse is that which indicates how the writer takes himself and what he is saying. Let the sound of Stevenson go through your mind empty and you will realize that he never took himself other than as an amusement. Do the same with Swinburne and you will see that he took himself as a wonder. Many sensitive natures have plainly shown by their style that they took themselves lightly in self-defense. They are the ironists. Some fair to good writers have no style and so leave us ignorant of how they take themselves. But that is the lone important thing to know: because on it depends our likes and dislikes. A novelist seems to be the only kind of writer who can make a name without a style: which is only one more reason for not bothering with the novel.”

–Robert Frost, in a March 10, 1924 letter to Louis Untermeyer, from “The Selected Letters of Robert Frost” (1964).

In Flagler and Palm Coast:

Note: all government meetings noticed below are free and open to the public unless otherwise indicated. Many can be heard or seen live through each agency’s website.

The Sheriff’s daily incident reports and jail bookings are posted here.

The Bunnell City Commission meets at 6 p.m. for a budget workshop and 7 p.m. for a meeting, where commissioners are expected to set their maximum proposed property tax for the coming year, a rate they may lower, but not set higher, once they set it by vote later this summer. 201 West Moody Boulevard, City Commission Chambers, Building 3.

Announcements:

Section of St. Joe Walkway to close temporarily for reconstruction

An approximately ½-mile section of St. Joe Walkway – one of Palm Coast’s most popular trails – will be closed beginning Monday, July 24, to allow for reconstruction of the multi-use pathway. The portion to be closed is from eastbound Palm Coast Parkway to the Intracoastal Waterway, in the vicinity of Canopy Walk. Detour signs will be posted for bicyclists and pedestrians, taking them on a nearby trail route to Palm Harbor Parkway and the Hammock Bridge trailhead. Access along the Intracoastal Waterway between Hammock Bridge and Waterfront Park will remain open for now. However, as the project progresses, a portion of that section of the trail will be closed temporarily. The pathway must be reconstructed because it has cracks and damage from tree roots. City of Palm Coast crews will do most of the work, and then the repaving will be done by Halifax Paving. The project is expected to take several weeks. The City of Palm Coast appreciates the patience to trail-users as we complete this important trail reconstruction project. For more information, call Palm Coast Customer Service at 386-986-2360.

In Florida and in State Government:

Note: Some proceedings below can be followed live on the Florida Channel. Most legislative proceedings can be followed through the Senate or House websites.

The Enterprise Florida Board of Directors will hold a conference call and is expected to approve the appointment of Pete Antonacci as the agency’s new president and chief executive officer. (4:45 p.m. Call-in number: 1-877-402-9753. Code: 6423569#)

State Sen. Aaron Bean, R-Fernandina Beach, is scheduled to discuss the 2017 legislative session during a meeting of the First Coast Republican Club. (6:45 p.m., Casa Marina, 691 First St. North, Jacksonville Beach.)
