Stuart F. Meyer Hospice House
On Oct. 22, nearly 120 golfers helped Florida Hospital HospiceCare for the 16th annual Stuart F. Meyer Hospice House Golf Tournament at the Hammock Dunes Links Course in Palm Coast. Net proceeds from this shamble tournament totaled $28,000. These funds will support the eight-bed Stuart F. Meyer Hospice House, located on the campus of Florida Hospital Flagler. The Stuart F. Meyer Hospice House is the community’s most comprehensive hospice, offering acute, respite, home health and continuous care. No other hospice in Flagler County offers all four services. “We are so appreciative of all the support today. The funds raised will directly impact the ongoing care that the Stuart F. Meyer Hospice House provides to our patients and their family members,” said John Subers, director of the Florida Hospital Flagler and Florida Hospital Hospice Care Foundations. (FHF)

In Florida and in State Government:

Note: Some proceedings below can be followed live on the Florida Channel. Most legislative proceedings can be followed through the Senate or House websites.

REGULATORS EYE DUKE, GULF POWER ISSUES: The Florida Public Service Commission will take up numerous issues, including a proposal by Duke Energy Florida to spend $34.5 million to end electricity purchases from a Polk County power plant. Duke has an agreement to buy power from Ridge Generating Station, L.P. through 2023, according to a filing at the commission. But Duke said the agreement is “no longer cost-effective” for its customers and, as a result, wants to pay $34.5 million to terminate the agreement. Duke would recoup the $34.5 million from customers but said in the filing that ending the agreement would ultimately save $37.6 million to $44 million for customers. Duke said it was cost-effective in the past to buy power from the Ridge plant but that Duke’s “avoided costs” — essentially other ways of meeting the customers’ needs — have decreased. Among other issues slated to be considered during Tuesday’s meeting will be a proposal by Duke to suspend sending bills to customers in counties that sustained heavy damage from Hurricane Michael until the utility finishes restoration work in the counties. Duke, which provides service in hard-hit Bay, Gulf, Franklin and Wakulla counties, said in a filing that hurricane damage had made delivering mail difficult. After the regular commission meeting, the PSC will hold a hearing about a plan by Gulf Power Co. to pass along savings to customers from last year’s federal tax overhaul. The federal changes included lower corporate income-tax rates. (Tuesday, 9:30 a.m., Betty Easley Conference Center, 4075 Esplanade Way, Tallahassee.)

TAXWATCH DETAILS GUBERNATORIAL TRANSITION: Florida TaxWatch will hold a news conference to release a handbook designed to provide information to the next governor to help with the transition after the Nov. 6 election. Former Gov. Bob Martinez and TaxWatch President and CEO Dominic Calabro will take part in the news conference. Republican Ron DeSantis and Democrat Andrew Gillum are running to replace outgoing Gov. Rick Scott. (Tuesday, 11 a.m., Florida TaxWatch, 106 North Bronough St., Tallahassee.)
