Monday Briefing: Diabetes Flag-Raising, Great Kids Awards, Dangerous Dog Hearing, Flagler Cares

Society of St. Vincent de Paul fund-raiser
The Nearly New Fashions for You Benefit Fashion Show and Luncheon was a major fundraiser raising more than $3,750 for Flagler Beach’s Society of Saint Vincent de Paul and the Nearly New Thrift Store. The fashion show was held on Sunday, October 28th, at the Halifax Plantation Golf Club in Ormond Beach, seeing more than 200 in attendance. The afternoon event also included raffles of unique baskets, wreaths and table top tables, as well as handmade sets of three pumpkin centerpieces. Local businesses also donated some items that were used in the baskets. These businesses included ABC Fine Wine and Spirits, Fitness One, Gerling Travel, Hibbett Sports, High Tides at Snack Jack, Kool Beenz, Oceanside Beach Bar and Grill, SeaCasas and The Pink Turtle Gift Shop. Other local businesses and individuals made financial donations to help offset the costs of the show. These businesses included BizCard Xpress, Carla’s Cleaning and Handyman, and Mr. Kleen Cleaning Services. The Nearly New Thrift Store in Flagler Beach opened over 10 years ago and is located at 400 South Daytona Avenue in Flagler Beach, just south of the Flagler Beach Post Office. The store has become much more than a place to purchase items at a great price. Many of the customers visit the store not only for the daily sales but to have a place where they can connect to others and share a story, a laugh or a smile. Many of the customers are known to the volunteers by their first names and, thanks to this successful fashion show, many more people in the area will stop by and feel like they are part of the store family. The Nearly New offers “nearly new” items at a fraction of the retail price. The store is open all week except Tuesday and Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“He cups his hands around his mouth. “Stop fighting,” he says to some invisible prisoners. “I said stop fighting.” His voice is nonchalant. “Y’all ain’t go’ stop, huh?” He makes like he’s backing out of a door and slams it shut. “Leave your ass in there!” He turns to face us. “Somebody’s go’ win. Somebody’s go’ lose. Hell, they both might lose, but hey, did you do your job? Hell yeah!” The classroom erupts in laughter. We could try to break up a fight if we wanted to, he says, but he wouldn’t recommend it. “We are not going to pay you that much,” he says emphatically. “The next raise you get is not going to be much more than the one you got last time. The only thing that’s important to us is that we go home at the end of the day. Period. So if them fools want to cut each other, well, happy cutting.”

cooper the dogIn Court: A hearing is scheduled before Circuit Court Judge Terence Perkins in the case involving dangerous dog Cooper, which belonged to Palm Coast resident Dottye Benton when it bit a man in Benton’s home, severely injuring him. It was Cooper’s second bite, leading {Palm Coast government to declare him dangerous again (Port Orange had declared the dog dangerous earlier in the year) and condemning it to death. Benton has been seeking a reprieve on the death sentence so that Cooper could be exiled to a refuge for dangerous dogs ion the west coast. The hearing, however, hinges on due process issues raised by Benton’s attorney with regards to the city’s hearing on the matter. The hearing before Perkins is scheduled for 2 p.m. in Courtroom 401 at the Flagler County courthouse. See background stories here, here, here and here.

In Florida and in State Government:

Note: Some proceedings below can be followed live on the Florida Channel. Most legislative proceedings can be followed through the Senate or House websites.

PSC WEIGHS PLAN FOR ELECTRICAL REPAIRS: The state Public Service Commission has scheduled an emergency meeting to consider a proposal by Florida Public Utilities Co. that could help Hurricane Michael victims finance electrical repairs to their homes. Florida Public Utilities, which serves about 13,000 customers in Jackson, Calhoun and Liberty counties, filed the proposal Thursday. Under it, the utility would pay upfront costs for electrical repairs to homes and then recoup the money from the customers over the following year. The program would be optional for customers and would finance repairs up to $1,500. Florida Public Utilities would not charge interest on the money used for repairs but would collect a $20 administrative fee. Hurricane Michael, which made landfall Oct. 10 in Mexico Beach and caused major damage in Jackson, Calhoun and Liberty counties as it moved north, caused all Florida Public Utilities Co. customers in the region to have power outages, the filing said. As of Thursday, the utility said it had restored power to 97 percent of customers in the region who are able to have electricity but that 9 percent of homes cannot be reconnected because of damage to electrical equipment that is the responsibility of the customers. (Monday, 1 p.m., Betty Easley Conference Center, 4075 Esplanade Way, Tallahassee.)

REGULATORS DIG INTO UTILITY COSTS: The Florida Public Service Commission will hold a hearing on a series of costs that utilities pass along to customers in monthly bills. The costs are for such things as power-plant fuel and improvements to comply with environmental requirements. (Monday, 1:30 p.m., Betty Easley Conference Center, 4075 Esplanade Way, Tallahassee.)

FLORIDA POPULATION NUMBERS EYED: The Demographic Estimating Conference will analyze Florida population numbers. (Monday, 1:30 p.m., 117 Knott Building, the Capitol.)

EARLY VOTING HELD IN HARD-HIT COUNTIES: Early voting will continue Monday in Bay, Calhoun, Franklin, Gadsden, Gulf and Jackson counties, which sustained major damage in Hurricane Michael. The state extended the early-voting deadline in those counties.
