Notably: It is Mary McLeod Bethune’s birthday (1875). She was born in Mayesville, South Carolina, became a teacher, founded her own school, the Daytona Normal and Industrial School for Negro Girls, which in 1931 merged with the Cookman Institute, when it was renamed Bethune-Cookman College, and eventually Bethune-Cookman University. It is also Marcel Proust’s birthday (1871). “Walter Benjamin,” Larry McMurtry once wrote, “said Proust was the Nile of language; in the same spirit one could call Faulkner — fittingly — its Mississippi; the Mississippi, at least, of the American language.”

But all around the country, as the midterms unfold, Republican voters are embracing candidates who profess unalloyed allegiance to Trump, candidates who promote the myth that the 2020 presidential election was stolen, candidates who either can’t recognize or aren’t concerned about the autocratic path that Trump and his enablers would take us down. Those voters and those candidates are America. America is the prime-time hours on Fox News, which commands a bigger audience during that stretch than either CNN or MSNBC does. America is the viewers who thrill to Tucker Carlson’s rants and echo Sean Hannity’s resentments. They’re not all of America, obviously. And the midterms have provided some solace, such as Georgia primaries in which Republicans who refused to do Trump’s bidding — and were then targeted by him — prevailed over ultra-MAGA foot soldiers. But this country is a mix of truth and lie, of generosity and selfishness, of order and chaos. What Hutchinson saw on Jan. 6, 2021, wasn’t un-American. It was just an especially sad and scary version of America.

–From Frank Bruni’s “Was Jan. 6 Really ‘Un-American’?” The New York Times, June 30, 2022.

Thank you, Mr. Tristam, for highlighting Frank Bruni’s thoughts.

Was Portugal’s former Europe minister, Bruno Maceas, correct when he observed in his History Has Begun that “perhaps alone among all contemporary civilizations, America regards reality as an enemy to be defeated”?
