“Our [prison] resources are misspent, our punishments too severe, our sentences too loaded. […] I can accept neither the necessity nor the wisdom of federal mandatory minimum sentences. In all too many cases, mandatory minimum sentences are unjust.”
–Justice Anthony Kennedy, speaking to the American Bar Association in 2003.

Note: all government meetings noticed below are free and open to the public unless otherwise indicated. Many can be heard or seen live through each agency’s website.
The Sheriff’s daily incident reports and jail bookings are posted here.
In Court: Circuit Judge Terence Perkins hears pre-trials and possible pleas in a dozen cases, mostly drug-related. Phillip Haire Jr., the Palm Coast resident accused of shooting at a cop and at his parents last year in the L Section, was scheduled for a possible plea disposition, but both the state and the defense are asking for a continuance until August, as plea negotiations are ongoing. It is an indication that the case may be settled before it reaches trial. Perkins will also be holding docket sounding for more than two dozen cases. Docket sounding is the last step before trial, and when trial dates are scheduled. 1:30 p.m. in Courtrooom 401 at the Flagler County Courthouse.
The Flagler County Commission holds a workshop immediately following its regular 9 a.m. meeting, at the Emergency Operations Center, 1769 E. Moody Blvd, Bldg. 3 (behind the Government Services Building), Bunnell, to discuss an ordinance regarding parking on county property. The ordinance would more strictly address overnight parking at county facilities by vehicle owners who are not conducting business with the county and seemingly have no reason to be there–other than for advertising purposes: the ordinance would address those election campaign vehicles, which have often included those of county officials.
The Flagler County Commission is scheduled for another budget workshop at 1 p.m. at the Emergency Operations Center, 1769 E. Moody Blvd, Bldg. 3 (behind the Government Services Building), Bunnell, at which commissioners may reveal what cuts they’re prepared to propose in the proposed budget the county administrator has submitted. Commissioners said they were not happy with a proposed tax increase to pay for a range of new needs. See the background story here: “Balking at Proposed Tax Increase, County Commissioners Offer Alternatives Outside of Public Meeting.”
The Bunnell City Commission holds a special meeting to discuss contract negotiations with Martin Murphy, the candidate the commission selected as its top choice to be manager. But Murphy is requesting a $90,000 salary. The position was advertised for $75,000. 6 p.m. at City Hall, 201 West Moody Boulevard, Bunnell.
The Flagler County Veterans Advisory Council meets at 4 p.m. in the First Floor Conference room of the Government Services Building, 1769 E. Moody Blvd., Bunnell.

As part of this effort, the City is asking local business owners and those that work from home to take the Palm Coast Tech Assessment. In just 15 minutes, the assessment will generate a customized report with technology opportunities available to you. Help Palm Coast pave the way for innovation by taking the survey here.
