The Flagler County School Board holds a closed-door session at 1 p.m. at the Government Services Building, 3rd floor, to discuss school security. Closed-door sessions are permissible for the purpose, though no record of the meeting is kept, nor is the board required to post notice that the meeting is taking place.

The Flagler County School Board meets in workshop at 3 p.m. on the third floor of the Government Services Building. Board members are expected to discuss, among other things, the district school-choice, open enrollment plan, available here. Board members will also discuss putting up for sale, again, the land where its former Corporate One building used to stand, at 1 Corporate Drive off Palm Coast Parkway, as surplus property. Bids are due by May 2. See the legal ad here. Board members will also discuss adopting K-12 science books and materials.

The Palm Coast City Council meets at 6 p.m. at City Hall at Town Center. Council members are expected to approve the purchase of a $463,000 fire truck.

Improv: Prof. Samantha Stern, Daytona State College’s award-winning drama program chair, Prof. Samantha Stern, will provide an overview and hands-on demonstration of how improvisation helps increase joy, happiness and well-being. From 2 to 3:30 p.m. at Daytona State College’s Advanced Technology College’s multi-purpose room, 1770 Technology Blvd., Daytona Beach (located ½-mile north of LPGA Blvd. off Williamson Blvd.) The free event is part of Daytona State College Foundation’s Wisdom in Senior Education (WISE) program.

City of Palm Coast’s Find Your Florida 2018 Photo Contest begins: The City of Palm Coast will hold the Find Your Florida 2018 Photography Contest now through May 31. Prizes will be awarded, and photographs submitted for the contest will be used by the City for marketing, promotional and public relations purposes. The theme of the contest is “Find Your Florida in Palm Coast.” Winning photos will illustrate what makes Palm Coast special. Examples of what the City is looking for include: family fun at our festivals, sports activities, cultural clubs and organizations, and on our parks and trails; active lifestyle such as walking/running/bicycling, sports, swimming, fishing and boating; and nature such as beautiful landscapes, birds and other wildlife, and waterways. The City wants to share what’s special about Palm Coast. First, second and third place will be awarded, plus special awards for a new people-focused category, “Palm Coasters” and for the Best Photo taken by a youth age 17 and younger. For the first time, a concurrent photo contest on Instagram will be held, and prizes will be awarded for the best Instagram photos, too. To enter via Instagram, be sure to use the hashtag “PCpics2018” and include the photo location (where in Palm Coast?) in the caption. Gift certificates to local businesses will be awarded in the following amounts: First Prize, $200; Second Prize, $100; Third Prize, $50; Instagram winner, $100; “Palm Coasters” winner, $50; and Youth winner, $50. Gift certificates will be offered to a variety of businesses, and winners will be able to select from the list. In addition, honorable mentions will be awarded as determined by the judges. Winning photographs will be displayed on the City’s website, and winning photographers will be recognized at a meeting of the Palm Coast City Council. Photographers may submit up to 20 entries. It is free to enter. Entries must be submitted no later than midnight May 31, 2018.
Photographs submitted for the contest must be taken in the City of Palm Coast. The photographs will be used by the City for marketing, promotional and public relations purposes such as publications, videos and websites, and at City facilities, to promote the City of Palm Coast. BUDGET DEADLINE: House and Senate negotiators need to finish a 2018-2019 budget by a Tuesday deadline to allow the legislative session to end as scheduled March 9. The Constitution requires a 72-hour “cooling off” period before lawmakers can vote on the budget.

SUPREME COURT HEARS ASBESTOS DISPUTE: The Florida Supreme Court will hear arguments in a multimillion-dollar lawsuit filed by a man who said he suffered mesothelioma because of exposure to asbestos in cigarette filters and other products. Plaintiff Richard DeLisle went to the Supreme Court after the 4th District Court of Appeal ruled in favor of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. and Crane Co., a manufacturer accused of exposing DeLisle to asbestos in gaskets. The appeals court ruling came after DeLisle had won an $8 million verdict in the Broward County case. Along with exposure in the gaskets, DeLisle alleged exposure in filters of Kent cigarettes he smoked in the 1950s. R.J. Reynolds is a successor company to the manufacturer of Kent cigarettes. The appeals court ruled that testimony of three of DeLisle’s expert witnesses should not have been admitted in circuit court. HOUSE PRIMARY RESULTS CERTIFIED: The state Elections Canvassing Commission will meet to certify the results of Feb. 20 Republican special primaries in House District 39 and House District 114. Polk City Republican Josie Tomkow won the primary in District 39, which includes parts of Polk and Osceola counties, and will face Democrat Ricky Shirah in the May 1 special general election. Miami Republican Andrew Vargas won the primary in Miami-Dade County’s District 114 and will face Democrat Javier Fernandez and unaffiliated candidate Liz de las Cuevas in the May 1 general election. FSU HOLDS TOWN HALL ON NAMINGS: The Florida State University President’s Advisory Panel on University Namings and Recognitions will a town-hall forum. University President John Thrasher formed the panel to review and make recommendations about university policies dealing with campus names and markers. (Tuesday, 2 p.m., Florida State University, Augustus B. Turnbull III Florida State Conference Center, 555 West Pensacola St., Tallahassee.)

UNF TRUSTEES MEET: The University of North Florida Board of Trustees will meet to discuss an employment agreement with David Szymanski, who was recently selected to become university president. (Tuesday, 6 p.m., University of North Florida, J.J. Daniel Hall, Jacksonville.)
