Alligator Stops Traffic to Cross at Cypress Edge Drive

An alligator was spotted at 9:20 a.m. this morning in some bushes near the intersection of Cypress Point Parkway and Cypress Edge Drive in Palm Coast. The gator, more than 5 feet long, was sitting by the crosswalk then suddenly scampered across the road, using the white-striped crosswalk as if it had been trained to do so.

Flagler County Sheriff’s Office Cpl. Kenny Goncalves (left in the image above) and Deputy Jonathon Duenas stopped traffic to allow the animal to cross, which took about 30 seconds, according to a release the sheriff’s office issued this afternoon.

A trapper from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission was called but before he could arrive on scene, the gator went to a wooded lot and back to its natural habitat. The trapper was canceled. (Alligators may be hunted in Florida, but within strictures.)

“He just walked in the crosswalk like it was normal,” Goncalves said.

As someone who drives in Palm Coast every day, the drivers behind the officers were honking their horn, flicking off the gator, creeping up further and further and so angry that their morning drive was set back 30 seconds from what it could have been.

Welcome to Palm Coast! some of the most inconsiderate drivers around! And in a city that can’t get the timing of the lights right to deter the traffic congestion..

People here have taken away their habitat. So people chill!!!!! That gator has more of a right here than us. All you impatient people, bet there were a few of you who would have run that gator over just to get to where you were going.

Will you look at that? The little lizard brain still has the sense to use a crosswalk. I’m not sure if I should be impressed or disturbed by that thought…

I’ve been in FL for 7 years and still have not seen an alligator. Drive to that intersection almost every day, but, missed that site! Poor thing, it must have been scared to death. I’m sure the people were obnoxious as most people in Palm Coast are not the most tolerant type.

    Maggie:

If you want to spy some alligators: on a hot day, stop by Memorial Hospital Flagler’s parking lot, you’ll
likely see a reptilian resident or two sunning themselves. Also take a ride to Town Center-Central Park,
park your car, and walk to the pond.

There’s always an alligator there to pose for your camera. Remember to bring some Gatorade.
