“In the United States at the present day the reverence which the Greeks gave to oracles and the Middle Ages to the Pope is given to the Supreme Court. Those who have studied the working of the American Constitution know that the Supreme Court is part of the forces engaged in the protection of the plutocracy. But of the men who know this, some are on the side of the plutocracy, and therefore do nothing to weaken the traditional reverence for the Supreme Court, while others are discredited in the eyes of ordinary quiet citizens by being said to be subversive and Bolshevik. A considerable further career of obvious partisanship will be necessary before a Luther will be able to attack successfully the authority of the official interpreters of the constitution.”

–From Bertrand Russell’s”Power” (1938).

Note: Some proceedings below can be followed live on the Florida Channel. Most legislative proceedings can be followed through the Senate or House websites.

SLAVERY MEMORIAL AT ISSUE: The Senate will hold a floor session and could vote on numerous bills, including a proposal (HB 67), sponsored in the Senate by Sen. Darryl Rouson, D-St. Petersburg, that would create a slavery memorial at the Capitol. The Senate also could vote on a bill (SB 800), filed by Minority Leader Oscar Braynon, D-Miami Gardens, that would expand a pilot program in which drug users can exchange dirty needles and syringes for clean needles and syringes. (Tuesday, 9 a.m., Senate chamber, the Capitol.)

MAJOR EDUCATION BILL CONSIDERED: The Senate Appropriations Committee is slated to take up dozens of bills, including a major education bill (HB 7055) that is a priority of House Speaker Richard Corcoran, R-Land O’ Lakes. HD 72 RESULTS CERTIFIED: The state Elections Canvassing Commission will formally certify the results of a Feb. 13 special election in Sarasota County’s House District 72. The legacy of a war profiteer https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_M._Olin_Foundation reached out from beyond its grave to put Neil Gorsuch in the pocket where McConnell keeps poison. The Koch’s still plague everything, but they’ll have plenty of company when they arrive at the Fourth Circle. I know – I don’t believe in it either, but what else do we have?
