reiko serrato dancer winner flagler palm coast high — The National Honor Society for Dance Arts (NHSDA) State of Florida Merit Scholarship’s first place winner is Flagler Palm Coast High School’s Senior Scholar, Reiko Serrato, above. Reiko is being recognized by the affiliates of the Florida Dance Educators Organization for her Artistic Merit, Leadership and Academic Achievement. Reiko is receiving a $300 scholarship for summer dance studies. Her application will be forwarded for adjudication at the national level. This award is the highest high school dance award in the United States. Reiko is invited to perform her own solo piece at the Florida Honors Concert on Saturday February 2 at the Don Thompson Theatre of Blake High School’s campus, 1701 North Boulevard, Tampa, at 7 p.m. Read the letter the National Society for Dance Arts wrote Reiko Serrato here.

“Which leads to a final question: Why am I publishing these random recollections toward a memoir while I’m still working on the last volume of the Johnson biography, when I haven’t finished it, while I’m still—at the age of eighty-three—several years from finishing it? Why don’t I just include this material in the longer, full-length memoir I’m hoping to write? The answer is, I’m afraid, quite obvious, and, if I forget it for a few days, I am frequently reminded of it, by journalists who, in writing about me and my hope of finishing, often express their doubts in a sarcastic phrase: “Do the math.” Well, I can do that math. I am well aware that I may never get to write the memoir, although I have so many thoughts about writing, so many anecdotes about research, that I would like to preserve for anyone interested enough to read them. I decided that, just in case, I’d put some of them down on paper now.”

The Bunnell City Commission meets at City Hall, 201 West Moody Boulevard, at 7 p.m. Commissioners will consider designating a portion of South Pine Street between East Court Street and East Moody Boulevard as One Way, and will vote on an ordinance creating “a permitting process for motion picture photography production within the City,” a measure attempting to tamp down or regulate large public gatherings in predominantly black South Bunnell focused on music and music videos. “This permit process has been developed to provide for an orderly process to address the impacts of such productions on city services,” the administration’s memo on the proposed measure states, “and address lifesafety concerns, while preserving the free speech rights of the producers thereof.”

The 26th Annual Family Life Center Golf Tournament at Grand Haven Golf Club starts with registration at 9 a.m., shotgun start at 10 a.m. Registration is $99 per golfer, includes Raffle Tickets, Green Fee, Cart Fee, Goody Bag & Post Tournament Dinner. The Flagler Palm Coast High School Advisory Council meets at 6 p.m. at the school.

The Buddy Taylor Middle School Advisory Council meets at 5 p.m. at the school’s media center, its PTO meets at 6 p.m.

The Flagler County Stamp and Coin Club meets at 4:30 p.m. at the VFW Post 8696 47 N. Old Kings Road. From 4:30 – 6 p.m. the time is used for buying, selling and trading stamps and coins. The club meeting starts at 6 p.m. and ends at 7:30. There is a live auction of stamps and coins at the end of the meeting. The club is open for members, the general public, and all who are interested in stamp and coin collecting and investing. Free stamps and coin evaluations at all our meetings. Palm Coast Residents’ Survey: Palm Coast residents have until Feb. 2 to take the 2018-2019 Palm Coast Citizen Survey, which may be taken online here. The city is conducting the survey as part of its annual goal-setting process. The survey covers a variety of topics related to quality of life; city services such as stormwater drainage, street maintenance, garbage, recycling and streetlights; recreational programs and events; amenities such as parks, trails; economic growth and development; traffic flow; and crime prevention and public safety. It also allows residents to provide comments on any subject they’d like to share with the city. For more background, go here.

Flagler Beach Is Open For Business: A1A Construction Update:

FlaglerLive is providing weekly updates to year-long construction on and near State Road A1A in Flagler Beach as the Florida Department of Transportation rebuilds a 1.5-mile segment from South 9th Street to South 22nd Street, and builds a sea wall at the north end of town. These updates are provided through DOT or local officials. If you have any relevant information or images, you’re welcome to email them to the editor here.

January 24 update: The project team had anticipated beginning construction this week on S.R. A1A. However, the work is pending some utility relocations, which have not yet been completed. The project is now delayed to February. According to a city official, “February 4th is the new start date when the 300 day clock starts. Road work(no detours) will start sooner at the north end beginning approximately the second week of February with detours on the southern stretch starting in late February/early March.”

The contractor has 300 days to complete the work.

HURRICANE DAMAGE DISCUSSED: Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried, Sen. George Gainer, R-Panama City, Rep. Brad Drake, R-Eucheeanna, and Florida Forest Service Director Jim Karels will hold a media availability after meeting with forest service foresters and rangers and farmers who sustained damage in Hurricane Michael. The Oct. 10 storm in Northwest Florida is estimated to have damaged 2.8 million acres of forest land.
