Notably: “How much is sordid and miserable in the condition of a working man and in a civilization founded on working men,” Camus wrote in his note books in 1938. For places where most of us spend a third of our waking ours, few come close to the time-wasting degradation of the workplace–not necessarily because of the work, though it is that for those condemned to involuntary drudgery, but because of the others: colleagues, bosses, customers. “L’enfer,” Sartre famously wrote, “c’est les autres.” Hell is (are) the others. Remote work, for those who could benefit from it (again: a minority of the working population) seemed to inaugurate a measure of autonomy and restore a measure of dignity for the working person, not to mention productivity: for those who take work seriously, working “from home” (a misnomer, really) is usually twice or three times as work-intense as working in an office, where distractions, meeting, interruptions dominate the day. If Covid were to have some silver lining for the survivors, a new approach to work might have been it. Not so. After a few years of booming remote work, companies and bosses have ended that extended Prague Spring and reimposed Soviet-style in-person workplace demands. It has nothing to do with efficiency or productivity. To the contrary. “Case by case, there may be good reasons for teams to work together in person,” a team of researchers who studied the remote work abrogation wrote in The New York Times.  “As a general rule, though, it turns out that ordering people back to the office full time is a power and status move. It’s a signature strategy of leaders who exhibit narcissistic qualities. They see any kind of remote work as a threat to their authority and admiration. They want to be worshiped at the office altar. Over the past six years, we’ve studied why some leaders continue to support remote work, while others resist it. We surveyed thousands of executives, middle managers and frontline supervisors on a host of personality traits. When we later asked them about their stances on hybrid and remote work, their answers didn’t correlate with how much they trusted their employees or how much they loved being around people. The only trait that consistently predicted objections to remote work was narcissism — the tendency to be self-centered and entitled. The higher the opinions of themselves leaders expressed, the more they coveted power and status — and the more they favored return-to-office mandates.”

Our research offers actionable insights for leaders and employees. As organizations continue to set and revise their remote work policies, our findings shed light on a new set of factors that will be worthy of consideration. It may be wise for organizations to consider narcissism when forming committees tasked with setting and implementing remote work policies (Mitchell et al., 2025)—particularly given narcissists’ preference for power- and status-conferring roles (Grijalva et al., 2020, Roberts and Robins, 2000). To limit the self-serving influence of narcissistic leaders, it may be helpful to ensure that policies about flexible work arrangements are determined more collaboratively. For employees seeking to encourage the adoption of remote work, our findings suggest that it is important to avoid threatening leaders’ power and status motivations. For example, instead of advocating assertively for remote work, it may be more prudent to consult leaders for their advice (Liljenquist, 2010, Stern and Westphal, 2010, Yukl and Tracey, 1992) on what would make hybrid arrangements palatable from their perspectives. By showing respect for their authority and accomplishments, employees may provide narcissistic leaders with validation and reduce their resistance.

It certainly sucks being away from your loved ones for so long. But at least the have a warm bed to sleep in & 3 meals a day! Americas Greratest Generation, slept in fox holes, make shift tents eatting K rations & making coffee in their helmets! In Viet Nam they marched through the rain soaked rice patties, & a jungle full of snakes, & bugs, & disease! This my friends is the price of freedom. They help stop communism then, & now the Democratic party opens there hearts to the the people responsable for 911! Socialism, communism, call it what you want. Its failed in every country in the world. Look what Xi does to his people, they eat rats , dogs, bats & what ever the government supplies.Lots & lots of rice. How happy are the people Russia, being lead by a madman feel when there’s no grocery’s on the shelf? And 1/2 the men are now dead! We old timers know, from the stories from our parents, & teachers how bad communism is, but do the Democrats care.? Their thurst for power shows how much they care about our country. The fighting inside the party is gonna get real ugly, real soon. As one side promises you the moon, the other side continues to bash TRUMP…. How did that work out for ya? A few years ago? Wake up people, don’t think it cant happen here, cos they are already knocking at the front door. Think of your kids….Do you want to vote to inslave them? Or do you want them to grow up free, & enjoy all the freedoms we Americans have had for over 250yrs.

“…In Viet Nam they marched through the rain soaked rice patties, & a jungle full of snakes, & bugs, & disease! …” and you would know this Dennis because you were there? Somehow, this Democrat you hate so much must have missed you. Maybe you were a REMF, maybe the guy next to you when the sh*t hit the fan was one of those damn liberals you hate so much. Maybe, just maybe, he even may have been — gasp — a black guy. Would you have stayed there Dennis, maybe hoping that damn Democrat might just keep you alive, save you if you were wounded, hauled your butt out of the paddies to the MEDEVAC. Or would have chosen not to fight next to one of them you hate so much. Or maybe, in real life, you just don’t care about color or religion or politics…as long as he gets you out alive and you don’t get someone else killed. That’s the real world, Dennis, not the crap you spew from right wingers.
You right wing hypocrites frost my you know what — always want to have the glory of war but never actually run to the sound of the guns. But you’ll enjoy your way of life Dennis, because of those damn Democrats like me who paid the price…enjoy…

Well, Dennis, you did it again. No surprise, but it is indeed sad and unfortunate. And totally FALSE!

Of course all Americans should honor the service of, and the sacrifices that each and every member of our nation’s armed forces makes. That goes for their families as well, who often spend long periods apart. Ditto for all of our veterans who have served in the past.

Your comment started out by praising our military, but it soon devolved into the usual biased, extremist maga horsesh*t insinuating that only SOME American military personnel and citizens are worthy of your very bent version of patriotism, while all others who happen to choose to participate in our democracy by being in the democratic party and voting for it’s candidates are suddenly communists. Do you REALLY believe that crap, the garbage you spew day after day?

In your eyes, according to what you spewed out of your face hole above, the many patriotic members of our armed forces past and present who dared to vote (D) and earned a purple heart when injured, or worse, killed in the service of our nation are not entitled to your respect simply because you are a mush brained maga bigot who derides half of this nation’s citizens for no reason other than their political affiliation? A HUGE number of democrats, average Americans who may not hold the exact same political philosophy as you have honorably served since the beginning of this country, and will continue to be patriots and serve in our military in the future. Many are buried at Arlington National Cemetery where another patriotic American veteran and U.S. president lies in honor… of course I am talking about none other than President Kennedy. You have the gall to disparage him and all other patriotic Americans who gave their all, including their lives for this country?! HOW DARE YOU! You owe every American an apology, but I doubt you are patriotic enough yourself to have shame or regret for the extremist BULLSHIT and completely false narrative you spewed above.

You need to sit in a dark room and pray for your soul, because it appears that you have lost your humanity!

      Dennis C Rathsam:

All those communist leaders you write about are Trump’s buddies! How is it you missed that? He has spoken many times how he admires and is friends with these authoritarian men, while he condemns our allies.

Trump protects North Korea while North Korea supplies arms and men to fight democratic Ukraine, while Russia supplies technology to North Korea to help them with their ballistic missiles, which can be used against us!

The Greatest Generation fought these very types in order to save our European allies. This last part is is basic history. What Trump is doing to the world should greatly concern you.

You really need to step outside your bubble. Trump is counting on you not to do so.

Now mango Mussolini in the WH has unilaterally declared the Strait of Hormuz to be “U.S. territory”!!! Newsflash to the moronic convicted felon con man… the truth, which is plainly evident to the sane among us, is that the Strait of Hormuz, an international waterway on the other side of the planet, is no more owned by the U.S. because of a nonsensical spout from the idiot’s face hole than if Putin suddenly declared that the inside passage up in Alaska all of a sudden belonged to Russia.

What’s next… N. Korea claiming ownership of the Gulf of Mexico??? The mango Mussolini needs to get a grip. Or better yet, can we please just END this infantile, criminal presidency?!

Oops, how ironic… I completely failed to mention that if N. Korea’s Kim Jong Un or any other dictator would dare try to take ownership of the Gulf of Mexico they would be a day late and a dollar short because our very own dictator wanna-be has already done so… declaring some time ago that that entire international body of water is the Gulf of “America” just by him saying so, ostensibly thinking it somehow belongs to the U.S. (or maybe him).
