neil gorsuch gay wedding cake

“And, to be sure, this Court has held same-sex marriage a matter of constitutional right and various States have enacted laws that preclude discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. But it is also true that no bureaucratic judgment condemning a sincerely held religious belief as “irrational” or “offensive” will ever survive strict scrutiny under the First Amendment. In this country, the place of secular officials isn’t to sit in judgment of religious beliefs, but only to protect their free exercise. Just as it is the “proudest boast of our free speech jurisprudence” that we protect speech that we hate, it must be the proudest boast of our free exercise jurisprudence that we protect religious beliefs that we find offensive.”

–Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch in gay wedding cake decision concurrence, June 4, 2018.

In Florida and in State Government:

Note: Some proceedings below can be followed live on the Florida Channel. Most legislative proceedings can be followed through the Senate or House websites.

DOUGLAS PUBLIC SAFETY COMMISSION MEETS: The Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Commission, which was created this year as part of a school-safety law, will meet in Broward County. Among the topics will be school discipline and diversion programs. Lawmakers formed the commission after the Feb. 14 mass shooting at Parkland’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School that killed 17 people. (Thursday, 8:30 a.m., BB&T Center, Chairman’s Club, 1 Panther Parkway, Sunrise.)

FACEBOOK FRIENDS ON DOCKET: The Florida Supreme Court will hear arguments in three cases, including a dispute about whether a circuit judge should be disqualified from a case because she was a Facebook friend of an attorney representing one of the parties. The Herssein Law Group took the issue to the Supreme Court after the 3rd District Court of Appeal rejected a request to disqualify Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Beatrice Butchko. The dispute stems from a lawsuit that the firm filed against a former client, United Services Automobile Association, for alleged breach of contract and fraud. As part of the case, the law firm accused a company official of witness tampering, and USAA hired Israel Reyes, a former judge, to represent the official. The Herssein firm sought to disqualify Butchko because she was a Facebook friend of Reyes. The firm raised concerns about receiving a fair and impartial trial, but Butchko declined to recuse herself. (Thursday, 9 a.m., Florida Supreme Court, 500 South Duval St., Tallahassee.)

SUPREME COURT RELEASES OPINIONS: The Florida Supreme Court is scheduled to release its weekly opinions. (Thursday, 11 a.m.)

GINGRICH SPEAKS IN PALM BEACH COUNTY: Former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich will speak and sign copies of his book, “Trump’s America,” during a Palm Beach Republican Club luncheon event. (Thursday, 12:30 p.m., The Colony Hotel, 155 Hammon Ave., Palm Beach.)
