More than 20 Florida authors will be on hand to share tips on how to become a published writer during a free conference on Oct. 19 at Daytona State College.
All are welcome to attend the event, Alive and Writing in Florida: Bloom Where You Are Planted, from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Hosseini Center on the Daytona Beach Campus, 1200 W. International Speedway Blvd. The free conference is being sponsored by Daytona State’s College of Humanities and Communication and Volusia County Libraries.
“Our basic purpose is to help grow writers,” said the conference chair, author and DSC professor, Dr. Lynn Hawkins. “If our students never meet living authors in Florida, it’s hard for them to imagine becoming a writer after they graduate. This conference is a rare opportunity to discover what it takes to get published.”
Mike Pyle, author of the award-winning book, White Sugar/Brown Sugar, will headline the program that also features panel discussions and break-out sessions with published writers of mystery, poetry, short stories, biographies, romance, graphic novels, fiction and non-fiction and children’s books.
In addition to Pyle and Hawkins, participating authors include Melody Angelin, David Axelrod, Evelyn Bethune, Jeff Boyle, Frank Ceravolo, Muriel Fuqua, Douglas Giacobbe, Joan Harris, Veronica Hart, D.L. Havlin, Bill Lazarus, Michelle Lee, Nancy Long, Michael Lowell, Donna Nicholson, Meg Perry, Mary Kay Pyles, Dallas Richards and Mary Custureiri, publisher for Taylor and Seale.
During the event, a grand-prize Taylor and Seale publishing contract will be awarded to the winner of a writing competition underway among DSC students, faculty and alumni.
