Douglas Kirkland – RETROSPECTIVE: Fifty Years of Photography
Renowned for his work in photojournalism, celebrity portraiture and film photography, Douglas Kirkland’s retrospective is a compelling look into a career in photography spanning over five decades. With just over 100 images, this exhibition features portraits of celebrities such as Elizabeth Taylor, Judy Garland, ‘Coco’ Chanel, Marilyn Monroe, Michael Jackson and other icons, alongside iconic stills taken on the sets of acclaimed films such as The Sound of Music (1965), Out of Africa (1985), Titanic (1997) and Australia (2008).

JONI STERNBACH – SURFLAND
Historic technique meets contemporary subject in the stunning luminosity of SurfLand. On the beaches of Montauk’s Ditch Plains and Rhode Island to Malibu, Del Mar and Rincon in California; and most recently on Australia’s Pacific coast, Sternbach’s distinctive process lures surfers to pose for her camera and results in what the photographer calls “part performance, part laboratory.”

CURTIS WEHRFRITZ – FLUIDRIVE: MODERN DAGUERREOTYPES
Work in the Fluidrive series spans over six years and is concerned with forms of lyrical and allegorical story-telling. Wehrfritz’s daguerreotype images are very much concerned with an overt theatricality and an implied narrative structure in the events, scenes and characters that are depicted.
“The series of work, entitled ‘Fluidrive’ is focused on the use of ritual. I am interested in a lyric image that can be revisited by the viewer in the way one re-visits the feelings created in a song or prose.”

“Chezhin’s absurd, significant, and meaningless staged photographs of nameless types/characters give off a powerful, unpleasant semi-physiological sense memory of a past age of male and female functionaries and workers stamped with the distinctive marks of the limited, if not curtailed consciousness of social invalidism. Stuart Rome – WONDERS: Images of Florida’s Forests
SMP LYONIA GALLERY at the Lyonia Environmental Center in Deltona, Florida
Stuart Rome followed in the footsteps of many of the great pro-genitors of natural science and journeyed to the heart of the Florida peninsula. His celebrated landscape images draw their inspiration and take their lead from the writings, journals, and illustrations of many of these important early naturalists. Signs and Wonders is concerned with the relationship between people and their environment. They examine the visual evidence present in the landscape of our cultural priorities and history and expand upon the standard landscape vocabulary to build a complex language of layers, networks and connections in the landscape. His eloquent black and white prints resonate with a precision and draftsmanship that belies the teeming energy and vitality present in the hidden details of a location.

Exhibition film seasons and film festivals at the Southeast Museum of Photography are co-sponsored by the Center for Interdisciplinary Writing and Research at Daytona State College.

EXHIBITION FILM SERIES: NOUVELLE VAGUE-FRENCH NEW WAVE Thursdays @ 1:30 pm
The origins and early history of both photography (Daguerre) and cinema (Lumiere Bothers) are traceable back to Paris. The city has figured prominently in the history of both these arts and has exerted an especially deep influence on the development of contemporary cinema; both in form and content. The French New Wave cinema movement of the early 1960’s revolutionized film, film theory and the style of contemporary movies. Take a look at some of the seminal figures and films from that era. Presented in conjunction with the museum exhibition: A Tale of Two Cities: Atget’s Paris and Berenice Abbott’s New York.
FILM MOVEMENT FEATURE SERIES: CONTEMPORARY GLOBAL CINEMA Fridays @ 1:30 pm
A new series of contemporary cinema from around the world. Emerging directors present film festival and alternative titles ranging from searing drama to quirky romances and comedies. Presented in association with Film Movement, a global, non-profit independent film distributor.
