Notably: The mailman delivered a nice two-volume edition of Pascal’s complete works. I’m no Jansenist, but Pascal is the genesis of modern French style–clarity, wit, satire. We can all use a bit of Pascal even if we’re not big on his wagers. The volumes include The Provinciales, his famous take-down of the Jesuits, and of course the Pensées, his even more famous work (and set-up for Voltaire’s take-down in his English Letters of 1727), though it was never intended as a book. A few samples: “In every dialogue and discourse, we must be able to say to those who take offence, “Of what do you complain?” Or: “The sensibility of man to trifles, and his insensibility to great things, indicates a strange inversion.” Or–and I feel this most during hobbles to the bathroom for post-midnight mictures–“The eternal silence of these infinite spaces frightens me.” Or–and I think of this on the way back to bed–“Why is my knowledge limited? Why my stature? Why my life to one hundred years rather than to a thousand? What reason has nature had for giving me such, and for choosing this number rather than another in the infinity of those from which there is no more reason to choose one than another, trying nothing else?” Tomorrow in this space I invite you to read Genesis’s take on the Pensées, if they were Trump tweets.

Let us imagine a number of men in chains, and all condemned to death, where some are killed each day in the sight of the others, and those who remain see their own fate in that of their fellows, and wait their turn, looking at each other sorrowfully and without hope. It is an image of the condition of men.

Don’t be so glum — you’re still your own God, and from what I gather here
… your most regular choir attendees are too; an informal Justice League dedicated to disdain for the idea of sacred or divine — anything.
Someday they will tabulate the exact dimension of — unknowable.
Or not.

See what the TDS, has done to the party of JACKASSES! Democrats have done a horrible disservice to America! They have fueled this fire & fanned the flames of ignorance. You cant beat him, you cant kill him, you can hate him all you d like Jefferies, Walz, & JB Pritzker need to turn down their volume, & act like men, not cry babies& liars before they start a cival war.
Keenan Hreib says
Cry babies? That’s your PRESIDENT.
The Democratic party, as imperfect as they are…. Are at least still a party. They need to reinvent themselves, and show alot more backbone when it comes to FACISTS like your President. The only disservice Democrats have done is not get a wanna be DICTATOR like TRUMP out of office as fast as the vast majority of AMERICANS want. You DENNIS apologize and support a pig like TRUMP. What does this make you?

It was one of the most shocking things to see when part of the White House was suddenly demolished for this proposed ballroom.
But then I thought how well the building looked WITHOUT that part of the building… and also WITHOUT a ballroom.
The building is a place of work, not pageantry. What’s next, Miss America contests? I’m sure there are many existing venues in Washington DC for that, perhaps too many. Which is perhaps one more reason why nothing gets done.
I would just restore the original facade, perhaps with underground facilities for security.
And Lindsey Graham’s argument that such a ballroom is necessary due to the unfortunate incident over the weekend is nonsense… was the capital building a safer place on Jan 6th?
Just an opinion.

An emotionally unstable ten year old is f**king up the world. No one is going to believe in us for many decades to come.

I can understand why Trump and his clan are pushing the new ballroom. If we already had it (as presidents – and others – have been calling for a ballroom for 150 years – per Trump), how events would have been different. For instance, this Correspondent’s Dinner is not affiliated with the government so it should never be held in a government facility but that’s beside the point. I guess if Trump is able to take over all the press, it would then be a government affair so it could be held there.
I’m also glad to see that Trump is really concerned about his personal safety. Gun violence affecting him is significantly more important that that affecting students, teachers, and all others that are subjected to gun violence all too frequently, who do not have a large security organization for their personal protection. Let’s get Trump inside his bulletproof, drone-proof ballroom so he can be assured of his safety. The rest of us can fend for ourselves.
I’m glad Trump was quick to bring up his ballroom vanity project in the moment of a violent incident involving hundreds of people. I’m glad he remains dialed in on the important things.
Skibum says
And yes, of course… now the convicted felon in the WH and his republi-cons are saying more of the quiet part out loud. Despite all of the promises to the contrary, that NO taxpayer money will be spent on the big beautiful ballroom debacle, they are writing up legislation to use nearly a half billion more of OUR money to fund erecting another vanity project to the most corrupt man ever to sit in the WH!
What happened to all of those hundreds of millions of private donations? Did the wealthy donors back out? No, I doubt it, because they will be there in tuxes and gowns when and if it ever is built… unlike you and me, who will never, ever make use of it.
I suspect it is just the latest in a very long line of grifts by this pedophile protector of wealthy corporate CEOs who enjoy diddling little girls. Did he promise them that the claim to the public that only private funds were to be used was just cover for having his maga republi-cons send him a bill to sign that empties more American treasury dollars into his own pockets?
The answer in the form of a question: Do bears shit in the woods?
Ed P says
American political violence is bigger than any “big beautiful ballroom”.
The ballroom concern doesn’t even make the top 20 greatest threats.
And…they transcend any single political figure, including Trump.

In another case of “you just can’t make this shit up”…
From “THE HILL”, by Alexander Bolton – 04/27/26:
“A group of Senate Republicans led by Sen. Lindsey Graham (S.C.) are pushing a bill to fund the construction of a secure 90,000-square-foot ballroom at the White House and say the project is essential to national security after a gunman tried to storm the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on Saturday.
Graham and his allies say the cost of this project would be offset by national park user fees and customs fees, and that the bill would authorize the construction of national security-related infrastructure below the ballroom, including an annex for the Secret Service.”
Now, I’m getting on in years but I’d almost swear Donald Trump stated his “big, beautiful ballroom” is being funded by private donations. Since this has been going on since October 20, 2025 (date of demolishment of the East Wing), common sense would say that Trump must have already had a pretty big nest egg for this project with a decent plan to fund the balance. But, here we are, six months later and now our Senate wants to have the taxpayers pay for the whole thing! And, in the process, try to bullshit all of us into thinking that, actually, national park and customs fees will cover the cost. What a load. Trump has already cut the funding of national parks. Here’s just another BS scam to take additional monies from our parks and give Trump his ballroom.
These people lie constantly and it’s sad to know that there is a small number of “MAGA forever” losers out there that absolutely can’t watch and listen to what is said on Monday and the reverse is said on Tuesday and have no problem just following along like the proverbial sheep over the cliff.
Unless Trump somehow stops the November mid-terms, I just can not wait to see the tidal wave wash over DC because of the actions and lies of these people.
