Notably: I had no idea, as we watched “The Green Book” for the first time a few nights ago–Driving Miss Daisy in reverse–that it was released in 2018. I thought it was a 2026 product. Or that it was a theatrical release. I thought it was a Netflix production (it had the feel of a $23 million production). Or that it won three Oscars, including Best Picture. The movie is named after The Negro Motorist Green-Book,  so called for no other reason than that its original publisher was Victor Green, who wanted to give Blacks a safer (there was no safe) way to travel in the land of the free and the home of the brave and know where to stay, eat, get gas without getting lynched. As the introduction to the 1949 edition put it, “it has been our idea to give the Negro traveler information that will keep him from running into difficulties, embarrassments and to make his trips more enjoyable.” The book started as a guide for the New York metropolitan area in 1936, and turned national the next year. The 1949 edition lists for Daytona Beach tourist homes, the C&B Restaurant at 566 Campbell Street, but there were no entries for anything in St. Johns County, the KKK’s Club Med, or Flagler County. The word amiable kept occurring to me as I watched the movie, which I found too neatly made, too safe, too intent on a “Trains, Planes and Automobiles”-type happy ending after what amounted to a buddy movie. I liked it. But I don’t think it’s the sort of theme that should be handled with so much comfort for the viewer. The jolts are predictable but are left hanging. I don’t know that we need reassurance these days that everything will be all right, that there was a time when a Bobby Kennedy could bail a Black pianist out of a Southern jail by way of a governor (I’m not sure a Southern governor would have given a shit what Bobby Kennedy thought).

There will be a day sometime in the near future when this guide will not have to be published. That is
when we as a race will have equal opportunities and privileges in the United States. It will be a great
day for us to suspend this publication for then we can go wherever we please, and without  embarrassment. But until that time comes we shall continue to publish this information for your convenience each year.

The Editor’s Blog today paved a memory lane that took me back to Pappy’s restaurant in the KKK’s Club Med, in the triangle formed at the intersection of S.R. 207 and U.S. 1 in St. Augustine where, post-Civil Rights Act, even the ketchup was made in-house so that management could state that the business was not engaged in interstate commerce and could thus refuse seating to whomever they chose. Genuinely “locally sourced.”

Well, everyone knows the Donald is petty as hell ….

But I just read an article from the BBC that shows that no matter how low he goes in the scale of insane thuggishness, he can always go lower ….

Thanks so much Koyote! I had no idea of the existence of this library/opera house that sits straddling the US-Canadian border. A touching video, and yet a tragic state of affairs. It’s just awful to think of how far our country has fallen since trump took office. How embarrassing, how terrible!

Windward maintains a daily report on international shipping traffic. On June 10, 2026, one westbound ship traversed the Strait of Hormuz and four eastbound ships made it through the Strait. More than 60 IRGC fast-attack boats were observed as active in and around the Strait. Normal pre-war traffic was as high as 140 ships per day.

Since outbreak of war over a hundred days ago, 40 ships have been attacked, with six near misses and 34 strikes.

Make of this what you will.

    Me?

From many other sources, ceasefire exists in name only. Missile strikes and drone attacks continue. Peace talks founder. Threats blossom. Deadlines vanish. Competing claims magically see-saw. Exactly what should be considered trustworthy?

If Iran’s navy is all at the bottom of the sea, how are so many IRCG fast-attack boats still operating in the region?

Elect a criminal, corrupt, narcissistic megalomaniac as “Maga” President, and this is what you get: an embarrassing, low life, gaudy, tacky display of chest pounding and lying to celebrate or country’s 250 anniversary! SOP!!! trump “Get Out”!!!
