Supreme Court Appears Likely to Side With Trump on Some Presidential Immunity

April 26, 2024 | FlaglerLive | 15 Comments

trump immunity

Some of the court’s conservative justices expressed concern about the prospect that, if former presidents do not have immunity, federal criminal laws could be used to target political opponents. However, the justices left open the prospect that Trump’s trial in Washington, D.C., could still go forward because the charges against him rest on his private, rather than his official, conduct.

Biden, in Florida, Highlights Abortion and Hopes the State Is Not Out of Reach

In a conference call with reporters, the communications director for the Biden campaign, shrugged off suggestions that former President Donald Trump “has the state in the bag.” National Democrats are seizing on abortion restrictions imposed in states such as Florida, where the Republican-controlled Legislature and Gov. Ron DeSantis approved a ban on abortions after six weeks of pregnancy. The six-week restriction is set to go into effect May 1.

Three things will be worth looking for in the visual coverage of Trump’s appearance: surprises, body language and symbolic juxtapositions. But even in the most camera-friendly jurisdictions, such as New York and Florida, photojournalists are subject to strict rules about placement and procedure.

Why Millions of Americans Still Believe the 2020 Election Was ‘Stolen’ From Trump

Two thirds of Republican voters (and nearly 3 in 10 Americans) continue to believe that the 2020 election was stolen from him, and that Biden was not lawfully elected. In fact, this “election denialism” is one of the major differences between those who support Trump and those who voted for his rival, Nikki Haley.

The Supreme Court Rules It’s Unconstitutional for States to Decide on Trump’s Qualifications

Right from the very beginning of the nation, and persisting until today, there have been rules that limit the ability of the people to choose their leaders. All of these rules stand in the way of simply “letting the people decide,” as Brett Kavanaugh suggested. Strictly speaking, those rules are not democratic. But they are intended to protect democracy itself.

For all that, compared to Trump he’s still the only credible choice, if it’s a republic we still want.

DeSantis Is Kaput

Something is terribly wrong here: Iowa, a far-off land of snow and butter, failed to give our Ronbo a win. Yet he did everything right. He visited all 99 counties. He shook hooves with every single cow. He displayed the depth of his feelings toward his wife when he gave her a warm handshake after one of the debates.

RFK lies

As pundits and politicos spar over whether Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s presidential campaign will factor into the outcome of the 2024 election, one thing is clear: Kennedy’s political following is built on a movement that seeks to legitimize conspiracy theories. His claims decrying vaccines have roiled scientists and medical experts and stoked anger over whether his work harms children. He has made suggestions about the cause of covid-19 that he acknowledges sound racist and antisemitic.

On Jan. 6, 2021, then-President Donald Trump exhorted followers to object to the results of the 2020 presidential election.

Taken as a whole, the structure of Section 3 of the 14th Amendment leads to the conclusion that Donald Trump is one of those past or present government officials who by violating his oath of allegiance to the constitutional rules has forfeited his right to present and future office.

Hitler used similar language about Jews “poison[ing] the blood of others,” in “Mein Kampf,” his 1925 manifesto.

Despite those idiotic “Build the Wall” campaign ads, he didn’t seem to be a Trump-style racist when he took office in 2019. There was hope he’d acknowledge our sad history and move us toward a more equitable society. But he didn’t. And he isn’t. Maybe the Napoleonically ambitious DeSantis decided white nationalism was his ticket to the Republican presidential nomination. His racism is less overt than Trump’s or George Wallace’s but almost as damaging.

Campaigning in Iowa, DeSantis Says Culture War Offensive Will Help GOP Elections

March 13, 2023 | FlaglerLive | 20 Comments

An apparently unaware Gov. Ron DeSantis, in Iowa to defend his culture war offensives, holds up what appears to be a snowflake gifted to him. A closer look reveals that the snowflake's arms are calligraphic versions of the word "Fascist." An Iowa Facebook page posted the picture with the following caption: "Little D Santis gets owned. My friend makes snowflakes to give to politicians who come to Iowa - there are special messages for odious Republicans--please look at the snowflake carefully 🤣😉"

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis told Iowa Republicans Friday that standing strong in the culture wars around issues like education, criminal justice and health care in the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic will help their party win elections.

Hundreds of videos prove that violence did not just occur sporadically as an extreme expression of the crowd’s displeasure but rather dominated the mob’s collective energy. The full weight of the crime that occurred on Jan. 6 is hard for Americans to measure because it is hard to imagine it could have occurred in America.
