“Charles de Gaulle, Julian Jackson insists in the preface of his new biography, “De Gaulle” (Harvard), is “everywhere” in modern France, its undisputed hero. This claim, like some other confident statements in the book, may strike a reader as both narrowly true and what a French thinker might call metaphysically false. His name is certainly everywhere—on the great airport outside Paris; on the Place Charles de Gaulle, once called the Étoile, where traffic streams perpetually around the Arc de Triomphe—but his example seems remote. He is more a ceremonial than a controversial figure, his work now done. In forty years of passing in and out of France, I have almost never heard him pointed to as an exemplar useful in any way for today’s crises. His name having been placed on l’Étoile is apt: the traffic goes around all day but never stops for long. If he lives anywhere, it is in the endless flow of books about the Second World War written by Americans and Brits, in which he emerges as the biggest pain in the ass in the history of the liberal order.”

Primary election early voting in Flagler County at three locations: Flagler County Public Library, 2500 Palm Coast Parkway N.W., Palm Coast; Palm Coast Community Center at the corner of Clubhouse Drive and Palm Coast Parkway, 305 Palm Coast Parkway; and Supervisor of Elections Office in the Government Services Building, 1769 E. Moody Boulevard, Building 2, Suite 101, Bunnell.

The Palm Coast City Council meets at 9 a.m. at City Hall in Town Center. The council is expected to approve an “innovation” agreement with Coastal Cloud, the Palm Coast firm and approve a lease for construction of a cell tower at 1290 Belle Terre Parkway, among other items.

The Flagler County School Board meets in workshop at 1 p.m. in Room 3 on the third floor of the Government Services Building, Bunnell. The board will discuss “branding” and communications. The board meets again at 6 p.m. in regular session.

The Bunnell City Commission meets at 6 p.m. for a workshop to interview two of four candidates for city manager: Phyliss Marshall-Hartman at 6 p.m. and Alvin jackson at 7 p.m. This will be Jackson’s second interview. See Marshall-Hartman’s resume here, and Jackson’s here.

The Bunnell Planning Board meets in the Bunnell Conference Room in Building 1 at City Hall (note the venue change) at 6 p.m.

Flagler County Historic Bus Tour, 9:30 a.m. starting from Holden House Museum in Bunnell, 204 East Moody Blvd. Discover the many historic and interesting sites in Flagler County on this one hundred mile bus tour led by local historian Bill Ryan. Relax and cool off on a comfortable air conditioned bus while uncovering the hidden history of Palm Coast and the Flagler Beaches. Tours will depart promptly at 10 a.m., include a lunch stop at the historic Bull Creek Fish Camp restaurant (lunch not included in tour price) and normally return to Holden House at approximately 2:30 p.m. Tours begin at Holden House Museum in Bunnell. There is ample parking here on West Side lot of Holden House Museum. West side is towards US1. Please park on the west side of Holden House. You should arrive in the parking lot between 9:30 for check-in. There is a briefing at the History Annex (Behind Holden House) The tour will depart promptly at 10:00 in an air conditioned Flagler Transport bus. Tours will depart promptly at 10 a.m. and include a lunch stop at the historic Bull Creek Fish Camp restaurant (lunch not included in tour price) and normally return to Holden House approximately 2:30 p.m. Tours are normally scheduled once each month, and are subject to availability. There is a fee of $20.00 per person. Planned comfort stops are scheduled. These tours are becoming very popular and reservations are required. Please call 386-439-5003 to make reservations.

Food Truck Tuesdays, 5-8 p.m. at Central Park in Town Center, 975 Central Ave, Palm Coast. Purchase and enjoy delicious cuisine available from food trucks situated along Park Street next to Central Park, and enjoy free entertainment. This month’s beneficiary is Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Couch to 5K Challenge sponsored by Florida Hospital Flagler, every Tuesday and Thursday through Oct. 11, 5:30-6:30 p.m. at Palm Coast Community Center Trail Head, 305 Palm Coast Pkwy. This group training and exercise program does not require any running experience. It is designed to encourage, motivate and challenge the individual to compete with his/her peers. The final goal is to run the Pink Army 5K on Oct. 14. Stop being a couch potato and sign up today! Please wear running shoes and dress to be outside. Registration includes race registration into the Pink Army 5K. $50/person that includes Pink Army 5K registration. Pre-registration required at www.palmcoastgov.com/register.
