Before You Celebrate Clinton’s Win: The Democrats’ Bad Downballot Map

October 23, 2016 | FlaglerLive | 7 Comments

Not a commanding Congressional seats for Democrats are in a non-commanding position. Even if they pick up seats in two weeks, they are likely to lose many more in two years.

Hillary Clinton looks increasingly likely to win the White House, but her party faces a big obstacle to success in congressional races — Democrats are sorting themselves into geographic clusters where many of their votes have been rendered all but superfluous.

House and Senate at Odds Over Congressional Map, But No Disagreement Over Flagler District

redistricting florida congressional map

The 6th Congressional District would be redrawn southward, losing most of St. Johns County and all of Putnam, and taking on all of Volusia and a segment of Lake, thus pushing the district more to the center than it’s been.

GOP’s Jolly Beats Sink in Congressional Election That Augurs Trouble for Democrats’ Midterms

March 11, 2014 | FlaglerLive | 10 Comments

Both parties viewed the special election to replace Rep Bill Young as a critical test of their chances for success in the mid-term elections in November. The result spells trouble for Democrats, who are expected to lose seats in the House–amplifying the Republican majority–and possibly lose the Senate, which they’ve held since 2006.

Tea Party’s Allure Dims. Its Zealots Shout On.

Ron DeSantis and other tea party congressmen are casting a less visible shadow in Washington of late. DeSantuis found a few people to pose for pictures with when he appeared at a Chamber of Commerce lunch in Palm Coast last week.(© FlaglerLive)

Just 64 diehard Republicans opposed the recent budget bill, among them, sadly but unsurprisingly, our own Ron DeSantis, who thinks being a Congressman is a game of grandstanding and TV time rather than dealing with the more prosaic business of compromising in Washington and constituent services in his own district.

Flagler a No-Show in Rep. Ron DeSantis’s Talk at Chamber’s “Think Flagler First” Event

January 17, 2014 | FlaglerLive | 16 Comments

Speaking before almost 100 people at a Chamber of Commerce lunch at Pine Lakes Country Club today, U.S. Rep. Ron DeSantis, whose district includes all of Flagler, talked mostly critically about a series of national issues, but never touched on matters relating to Flagler County until a county commissioner elicited one general response about unemployment.

Congressman Ron DeSantis: A Tea Party Fanatic Who’s Earned His Walking Papers

ron desantis

Ron DeSantis, who represents Flagler County, is not interested in governance. A standard-issue tea party reactionary, he’s a saboteur. He derails, with self-righteous bombast and distortions. He is part of the suicidal extremists willing to plunge the country in default over Obamacare, rather than fight to amend it legislatively. He should pay the price of his recklessness.

One Nation, Without a Clue

If our generations had been around in the 1930s, we’d still be in the Great Depression with prominent lawmakers telling each other we need a smaller government, argues Donald Kaul.

Head Start has given 20 million Americans a positive start in life since 1964. Marian Wright Edelman argues that continued success is in jeopardy as Republicans aim to decimate the program in the name of budget cuts.

A Health Care Deal out of Arab Bazars

For all the missteps, for all of Obama’s prevarications and defanged tactics, the end result will (should the bill pass) vindicate whatever he did, however he did it. What was bound to be a colossal battle turned out to unravel the worst and little of the best about America.
