jonathan canalesIn Court Friday: A jury trial enters its fifth day in the case of Jonathan Canales, who faces an attempted first-degree murder charge. He is accused of shooting his now-29-year-old ex-girlfriend in the neck in their Mondex trailer four years ago as the victim’s three children slept nearby. Canales has pleaded innocence, claiming Tiffany Norman shot herself. The trial begins with jury selection before Circuit Judge Terence Perkins in Courtroom 401 at 9 a.m. at the Flagler County courthouse. Assistant State Attorney Melissa Clark is prosecuting the case, Garry Wood is defending Canales. Layers are expected to present closing arguments late this morning or in early afternoon. Free For All Fridays on WNZF: Host David Ayres welcomes Helga van Eckert, the county’s economic development director, to talk about the latest scores, tourism director Matt Dunn on the effects of Hurricane Michael on the local tourism industry, Kathy Catron of the St. Johns County tourism bureau, and Palm Coast Mayor Milissa Holland.

naacpSaturday: NAACP Freedom Fund Awards Luncheon: Chaired by new member Marian Howell the award will showcase the annual event from 1 to 5 p.m. at the African American Cultural Society, 4422 U.S. 1 North, Palm Coast. The Honorable Dawn P. Fields, Seventh Judicial Circuit Judge, will be the speaker. In addition, the luncheon will provide a terrific meal, music – possibly dancing – and a cash bar. The cost is $50 per person. Tickets may be purchased from any of the following Executive Committee members: Linda Sharpe Matthews, Barbara Goss, Ernest Voyard, the Rev. Saturday: Crabbing Basics: making it Delicious, keeping it Sustainable: The tidal salt marsh of our park is home to the Atlantic Blue Crab, a popular seafood and keystone species of the local ecosystem. Learn to catch these tasty crustaceans in a one hour hands-on program, appropriate for adults and families. We will be meeting on the west side of the park. This program is free with park admission! university women flaglerSaturday: University Women of Flagler Workshop: “Beauty really is Skin Deep!” presented by Sharon Parziale, RN. This workshop with Sharon Parziale will give you a better understanding about how maintaining good health leads to better health decisions. This class is a foundational study about skin, its function, and the simple steps to maintaining it. The objective is to empower decisions based in knowledge. This presentation reviews basic skin physiology, introduces the holistic perspective of skin through the language of both Jin Shin Jyutsu (Japanese acupressure) and Ayurveda, and then discusses home care for naturally beautiful skin without the purchase of costly “beauty” products. Noon, at the Hilton Garden Inn, 55 Town Center Blvd, Palm Coast, admission fee is $10 (to be donated to the Scholarship Fund). Friends, family and the entire community are invited to attend. Saturday: American Red Cross Babysitting Class, 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at Frieda Zamba Swimming Pool, 339 Parkview Drive, Palm Coast. This class will prepare and teach teens the fundamentals of babysitting in a 6.5-hour course. The Trombone Ensemble, also directed by David Schmidt will play a beautiful sound piece by Joe Buono titled Eclipse. FPL DEAL ON TABLE: The state Public Service Commission will hold a hearing on a proposed deal in which Florida Power & Light would buy Vero Beach’s city-run utility and charge FPL rates to Vero Beach customers. The Public Service Commission on June 5 gave approvals needed for the deal, which FPL said at the time it hoped to close Oct. 1. But challenges emerged, spurring regulators to hold the hearing. (Thursday, 9 a.m., Betty Easley Conference Center, 4075 Esplanade Way, Tallahassee.)

PAROLE CASES ON ISSUE: The Florida Commission on Offender Review will meet in Lake County. (Thursday, 9 a.m., Minneola City Hall, 800 U.S. 27, Minneola.)
