That discussion must be “uninhibited, robust, and wide-open,” and “may well include vehement, caustic and sometimes unpleasantly sharp attacks on government and public officials.” In 2018, some of the most damaging attacks are coming from government officials. Criticizing the news media — for underplaying or overplaying stories, for getting something wrong — is entirely right. News reporters and editors are human, and make mistakes. Correcting them is core to our job. But insisting that truths you don’t like are “fake news” is dangerous to the lifeblood of democracy. And calling journalists the “enemy of the people” is dangerous, period.”

Road closures in Palm Coast: The temporarily closed section of Pritchard Lane – between Providence Lane and Prince Eric Lane – will remain closed through Aug. 17. A detour is in place. The temporarily closed section of Florida Park Drive – from Forest Hill Drive to Flarestone Court – will remain closed for about two more weeks as an emergency repair to a City of Palm Coast sewer pipe continues. The Inspired Mic, Palm Coast’s most daring and unpredictable open mic event, is scheduled for its monthly edition at The New Europa, European Village. Each month some of the most creative, innovative performances a person could ever hope to experience take place at The Inspired Mic. 14 presenters each month pull out slices of talent and genius to entertain the audience. Each presenter gets 7 minutes to present on a very eclectic blend of their genius. The New Europa at European Village, 101 Palm Harbor Parkway, Unit 101, Palm Coast. Doors open at 6 p.m. and presenters begin at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $10.50 advance, available at theinspiredmicus.com, or $15 at the door. Tickets include one drink (beer, wine, soda, tea, water).

Through Aug. 17: Florida Department of Health in Flagler is offering free back-to-school immunizations July 30 through August 17. Parents and guardians are asked to bring their child’s immunization record, insurance card, and a photo ID. The clinic will be open Monday through Friday from 8 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. No appointment is necessary. The DOH-Flagler is located at 301 Dr, Carter Blvd. in Bunnell.
