A reader sent me the copy of a one-page screed dropped in mailboxes of residents of Hidden Lake with Joe Biden signs in their yards. The first lines read like this: “I must report that you are the laughing stock of the neighborhood. Your neighbors, except one, are trying to figure out if you are mentally ill or just stupid. Most think the former; mentally ill.”
It goes downhill from there, down to the underworld of conspiracies and fabrications that have been the election season’s inferno. The bile is transcribed incoherence for incoherence from the acting president’s rallies or the Facebook pages of his fans. The difference here is the sender’s presumption. Instead of invading someone else’s Facebook wall, he invades their property. You could say it’s not much different from some of those campaign fliers poisoning our mailboxes. But this is more targeted, more personal, and supposedly from a neighbor. The letter goes on to make veiled threats, promising more to come. It’s B-grade intimidation.
And yes, that sort of thing, like those jeering mobs of Trump flag-wavers pissing the same vintage bile through bullhorns at polling sites in Florida, is a phenomenon exclusive to Trump’s camp. Exceptions prove the rule. What similar incidents we’ve had in Flagler, and we’ve had a few, are the work of Trump goons. There’s no equivalency here.
So it’s been this election season. I keep hearing it’s the worst season ever. I’m not so sure. Actually, I’m certain it isn’t. If anything, we’re seeing tamer variations on an old American theme. We imagine this country’s past as some gauze of tolerance and civility. It never was, especially at election time. It’s a nation built on blood and genocide and loathing for differences, a tradition no less virulent than its ancestries across the oceans. We do a better job of dressing up the carnage in fairy tales, so seductive to the current electorate’s susceptibility to liars and demagogues. Thuggery is in our DNA, lynchings in our lusts, fascism a few twitches from our triggers.
But before this piece begins to sound like Trump’s inaugural address, it’s worth noting that no one is getting serially murdered for trying to vote, as was the case in Jim Crow days. You might be called deranged if you have one kind of yard sign or another, but no one is getting excommunicated, declared a heretic or burned at the stake as our Massachusetts ancestors did to individuals who so much as thought the wrong way. Braving insults and bullhorns at polling sites or trashy threats in our mailboxes isn’t exactly life threatening.
If anything (though I doubt it, just as I doubt a Biden win: we are neither that engaged nor that informed) it looks like we may just end up with the highest turnout election in history, beating Kennedy-Nixon in 1960, though even then it didn’t go much higher than a lazy 61 percent. (Elections near the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century look like they had much higher turnout. But three-quarters of the nation was denied the vote at the time.) So we’re heading for a strong-turnout election despite the widespread attempts at voter suppression, the intimidation, the acting president’s war on the election’s legitimacy and his allegations of fraud in every Democrat’s vote and an illegal Mexican rapist behind every Democrat (unless he ekes out an electoral college win, then it’s the most legitimate election in the history of the universe, or at least Miss Universe). Who knows what post-election court fights will bring, though now that the judiciary is made up of Trump Tower doorkeepers with JD degrees, it’s not hard to guess.
In other words I don’t think this election is much different than any other. Sure it’ll define the future of the nation like no other. But that’s been said of every single election since Thomas Jefferson was called a “howling” atheist and infidel who would “destroy religion, introduce immorality, and loosen all the bonds of society.” Every election since has been an anthem to the apocalypse.
Yet here we are, because for all that, we’re also a remarkably big-hearted country. When we listen to our better angels, we’re generous, accepting, enlightened and admirable enough to sometimes resemble Winthrop’s city on that hill. It’s not a contradiction with our darker nature. It’s the American paradox. As paradoxes go, I’m happy to live with this one. I wouldn’t have survived this long otherwise. FlaglerLive wouldn’t have thrived in scarlet Flagler otherwise.
We have a couple of Biden signs in our P-Section yard of course. There are a few more on our street, something you didn’t see when Clinton ran four years ago. To our left (irony of irony), our neighbors Brooke and Troy have a big Trump flag. We haven’t dropped letters in each other’s mailboxes. We haven’t jeered, we haven’t questioned. If anything, they’ve looked out for our home–and our signs–the many times we’ve had to be away recently, they’ve looked in on my wife Cheryl’s health. Cheryl unhesitatingly helped Brooke with paperwork to cast her absentee vote in Wisconsin, undoubtedly for Trump. My son has done a better job of cutting their yard than ours. And we’re always happy to see them when we sit outside for a beer or something smokey.
We’ve also made a pact. Come what may on Nov. 3 at 9 p.m., whether their guy is winning or ours, we’re meeting on the lawn by those signs, by that flag, and we’re drinking champagne together–not to either candidate necessarily, but to the election, to democracy, and mostly to each other. We’re drinking to what endures. Presidents don’t. Neighbors do. And neighborliness must, long after the signs go down. To paraphrase the only gospel worth the name, there may be a concatenation of events in the best and worst of all possible worlds, but let us at least cultivate our own yards. Let us toast our neighbors.

Me and my family have nothing in common with anyone who voted for Biden. They are not welcome in my yard or to my table. Why? Because they believe babies should be killed at full term if the mother doesn’t find the child convenient to their lifestyle. They hate cops and law & order. They want to take away my 1968 Camaro because it burns gas and doesn’t run off batteries. They demand I pay for slavery because I have white skin even though my father moved here after slavery was abolished. They wants my guns and to make me dependant on the government. The list goes on and on. Yes, if you vote for Biden you are not anyone I ever want to talk to or see again. Good bye and good riddance.

Mr “Finally do you get it?
While I DO NOT believe a single falsehood that you utter, for EVERY line was full of deceptions and distortions; some might even refer to your diatribe as “FAKE NEWS”. However, as quoted in The Friends of Voltaire, Hall wrote the phrase “I DISAPPROVE OF WHAT YOU SAY, BUT I WILL DEFEND TO THE DEATH YOUR RIGHT TO SAY IT”. This quotation appeared BEFORE our Independence but its admirable sentiment has often times been equated to one of the fundamental rights in the First Amendment of our United States Constitution.
Perhaps all of us, EVERY person blessed to live within our great country, should spend a few moments reading this document. Perhaps we can overcome all the divisiveness, discord, dissent and downright hatred that has permeated our society.

If you truly believe the garbage you wrote about what people who vote for Biden supposedly support, you have swallowed all of the Trump kool-aid without even thinking for yourself whether or not it might be poison or not. The ads saying Democrats want to kill babies right up to the time of birth are not only laughable, but so stupid that I really didn’t think anyone would be so dense that they would actually believe such lies. Apparently I was mistaken. I am a retired, 29 year career law enforcement veteran. We hate cops and law and order. Another lie! How many times have the conservative talking heads on Fox news lied to you all about Democratic presidents taking all of your guns? Obama certainly didn’t take them, nor did Clinton or Carter, yet these idiots you apparently listen to continue to spout this garbage because simple minded people like you are willing to listen to these repeated lies. As you say, the list goes on and on. Until you and other closed minded people wake up and understand not everything you hear on your favorite “news” channel is the truth, and that there are good people who vote Democratic just like I know there are good people who vote Republican, this country will NEVER be able to work together for bipartisan solutions or even have neighbors that will be able to live peacefully side-by-side. If that is the kind of world you want, maybe you would be better off moving to Russia where there are other facists who believe in the kind of strong man countries with little to no dissention or individual though, not to mention free and fair elections.

Talk about killing…evidently you are all for letting the COVID-19 virus kill USA citizens! And, we are getting close to a quarter of a million people….many who could have been saved if the president were willing to follow his own doctors’ guidelines. Why?
I suppose you think it a humane thing to do…separate over 500 children and babies from parents…and be stupid enough not to provide information on how parents and children could eventually be reunited. If you think that is OK….I guess you are a soulless human being.
If you feel that an unwanted child should not be aborted….if the parent so decides…why aren’t the Republicans willing to financially care for them? You are adamant about prolife….but unwilling to support the unwanted child.
Makes no sense to me. I guess you don’t mind being a hypocrite, either!

Voters, Republican or Democrat, should have the interest of the Country at heart. Two parties should coexist. Right now the Covid 19 Pandemic should be our primary focus. We should be doing everything to keep our communities safe – wear masks, social distance, and wash hands. We should contact our Senators, Congressmen, and Governors and demand that they favor positions that protect their constituents. Cast your vote for whomever you believe will protect us from the scourges of the pandemic [a death toll of 225,000] and respect the opinion of those who disagree with you. Honesty, Integrity, and Leadership are the values to be considered. If you believe, like 66% of voters, that the Trump family is more corrupt than the Biden family, that should influence your vote. If you have pre-existing conditions and there is a possibility they will not be protected, that too should influence your vote. Lastly, if you are between jobs and cannot pay your rent or mortgage, that should influence your vote.
Decide if you want to Build Back Better or Make America Great Again Again (as if it didn’t work the first time) and vote. And respect the vote of your neighbors.

In retrospect, I wish I had the insight to start selling Trump flags.I could’ve gotten rich off of these zealots. Apparently the more flags you have, the better American you are. I truly hope this disgusting trend of Hitler style political fervency comes to an end, its totally unhealthy, especially considering the ridiculous nature of the belief system upon which it’s fueled. These protest voters tossed a grenade into our institutions, and the outcome is a big lie. America is as disorganized and compromised as ever. Remember, Putin and Friends are playing the long game, and these bozos just lost the last chess piece. MAKE POLITICS BORING AGAIN. And get back to your lives. I must have took a hit of acid earlier, I actually agree with most of what you said here. I back trump not because I like him , I just dislike him less than I cant stand biden. I dont consider the people who like biden as my enemy , they just have a different way of looking at things. I really do hope that no matter who wins that we can all set our differences aside and get along with each other. My biggest gripe when obama was president was the amount of taxes I paid ,and I felt like I was paying for moochers, not just in this country ,in other countrys as well. When trumps tax cuts took effect the government took $102 dollars less out of my check each week and from 2015 to march of this year when I retired my 401K tripled . Thats why even though I dont like trump as a person I want him to win.I realize everybodys situation is different and I accept that,I just dont like paying taxes to support anyone else but my wife and myself. I worked 50 years so I can coast for the rest of my life and I want to keep my money in my pocket, all this crap I hear biden talking about on his commercials sounds good, its what the democrats have been saying for the past 50 years, however none of this stuff he talks about is free .Maybe the wife and I will come over on tuesday night and join you and your neighbor for a drink!

Thanks Hawkeye! I completely agree with you. Let’s all stop trying to blame the pandemic on somebody. It’s here. Let’s stop all the attacks; on both sides. They are nothing but a waste of time AND MONEY. Money that could be going to so many other great causes. Let’s pass a law that restricts all politicians access to social media. And let’s ask the media to go back to reporting (and not making) the news and stop quoting some folks named ‘Anonymous’ and ‘A reliable source’ all the time.

The Trump trolls were out in full force today, driving in caravans around town in their flag-laden SUV’s, honking their horns, disturbing the peace in their zeal to promote their prejudices and generally just act like entitled bullies.
One wonders if they will trouble finding the rocks they used to lurk under before Donald Trump’s presidency gave them political permission to hatch their rotten eggs and spew their venom so loudly and proudly.
I look forward to a return to sanity for our country once Joe Biden is elected and both houses of Congress inch closer to a Democratic majority.

This is why the silent Biden voter outnumbers the loud mouthed, vile Trump supporter that gets off on being lower than the dog excrement on my shoe. There is a place for those people, a very special place that one day their irrelevant, useless selves will crawl back into and fade away like they never existed.
I have zero tolerance for racism, xenophobia, homophobia, misogyny, and the vile utterances of a cluster of people that follow the shepherd of their mindless cult.
Someone I worked with once (he was fired) learned it was the wrong move to call my co-worker the “N” word. I think he wet his pants by the time I was done eviscerating him with words. We are better than this cult-minded mentality of hate for other’s differences. It takes those of us that believe all people are truly equal to speak up and shut them down. They thrive on making people uncomfortable and fearful. Don’t fear them for they are weak in mind, heart, and spirit. They follow a narcissist that has sold the soul of America for likes and follows. We really are better than the deplorables of the world and it’s time we take this country back.

How rude can one person be? I don’t want to hear one more comment about Trump supporters being divisive and promoting hate. Because these comments just proved how wrong that is. I don’t like Trump, but I voted for him, because he is the best choice that we have this time around. The election is not a popularity contest. If you’d actually put your hate aside for a few minutes, and look at the accomplishments of both candidates. You would see the clear choice. And I am not something you scraped off the bottom of your shoe. I am an American, just like you.

I voted for neither candidate because neither one is what our country needs. Sadly I voted 3r party just to maintain my right to say something.
Our country needs someone young and experienced with both busniess and politcal experience. Not two old men in a pissing contest. That don’t give one damn about the average American. And sadly again I don’t think there are many out there qualified. Or if they are they don’t want the job.
I have had Trump supporters in my face making both verbal threats and nearly putting their hands on me. I only witheld retaliation because I didn’t want to go to jail. Amazing how hostile they get just for not supporting their candidate. The man is an egotistical bafoon and will run this country into the ground. Sadly Pedo Joe with his gropy hands and hair sniffing habits is no better. And before you blast me for the pedo accusations one only has to look at his interactions with children to know that he’s pretty creepy. I feel for his Secret Service detail. Most cops don’t condone that sort of behavior. I wonder how many conversations his campaign manager has had to have after?
I laugh at the Trump Flags and wonder how it’s even legal. Does having the larger flag somehow guarentee that your candidate wins? Does being the louder more obnioxious political supporter with the f u attitude if you don’t agree guarantee a win? I know it has cost me at least 2 friendships of over 20 years because I don’t support the current man in the Oval Office
I too hope that we can start getting along again after election season. Life is to short to waste on something that once is said or done you and I can’t change.
My election predicition is this.
Biden wins the popular vote. But looses the Electorate vote. Trump will win overwhelmingly in the Electoral College. And we will have 4 more years to suffer thru
ASF says
Well, the fact is, your voting for a third Party candidate was tantamount to voting for Trump–just as it was in the 2016 election. And that adds to the electoral college picture. Too bad you didn’t learn the hard lesson in reality that you, yourself, described. Maybe people need to understand that reality should beat rhetoric any and every day of the week and that theoretical actions have real life consequences.
What was that old definition of insanity–Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result? Everyone is (or should be) free to vote as they choose–But, given what the past four years have shown us can happen, I hope others will make better choices.

I agree with hawkeye and Pierre made some excellent points. But, from reading some of the comments here one can see nothing will change. Then you have people calling others cult member just because a comment doesn’t fit their narrative. Then there are those who are obsessed with Fox News. Fox News this, Fox News that, FOX owned right winged outlet, etc., etc. in every comment. It is childish behavior and ridiculous when Fox News is the number one news network. Besides nobody cares what you think of Fox News.

Nope, Nope, Nope….Pierre nice message but this is different.
My neighbors, family and friends remained close after Nixon’s win, Reagan’s win and Bush’s win….this trump election is totally different.

Also, I do know that my relationships with anyone who supported him will never be the same.
This is the not just like any other election.

Yes, but even more so: This presidency, over 4 years, has created an unrepairable chasm in my family. Half of my family has dug rabbit holes where they stuff their conspiracy theories, and they buy into and subscribe to EVERYthing. That half is obviously massive, massive trump supporters, going to his rallies anti maskers, etc. They are making plans to buy lots of land out west where there are republican governors, they’re going to buy tons of guns and ammo. Yea. This is my family. I do not know who they are anymore. How do you lose a family? I had no idea this was possible. I feel empty, sad, but I know I am okay. People talk about the election as being bad, and it is, but the worst part of this election happened 4 years ago, at the last election.

Yesterday, Saturday 10/31, a caravan of about 10-12 pick-up truck and suv’s, with trump flags waving were driving up and down Palm Coast Pkwy, horns blaring, some with air horns also blowing. These vehicles must have made at least 10 loops. It was very rude and obnoxious and also illegal.
At that time I was walking my dog in the Fairways (just off the Parkway, not far from the bridge). There were other people out enjoying the perfect day. I thought to myself, what make there fools acturally think these actions are going to make people vote for trump? The truth is that no matter what side you are on, you have to know that this type of action reflects trump and his team perfectly and that is loud, rude and obnoxious. You have to ask yourself, is this the type of behavior you want and expect from the free worlds leader? Is this how president Regan acted? How about president Eisenhower, Carter, Obama?
As I was just about to call FCSO, a woman also walking her dog called the non-emergency number to report this disturbance. The woman said that the dispatcher reported that numberous drivers and pedestrians had already called it in, shortly after the horn honking stopped.
It’s time for our nation to elect a calm, rational leader who can restore our standing and imporance to the world. Lets send trump back to trump tower and his gold plated toilet’s and return to a more calm, rational time.
Ramone says
Just remember, there’s many Trump supporters that go about there lives quietly. They don’t drive up and down the road waving flags and blaring horns. There are always going to be people who take things to the extreme. The majority of today’s divisiveness is a direct result of Biden supporters refusing to accept the result of the election. If Trump loses, the vast majority of his supporters will suck it up (like we did in 2008/2012) and go on with our lives in support of our great Country. Can you say the same for Biden supporters if Trump wins?

In my microcosm of a street, the Trump flags far outnumber the Biden signs. My mother lived on our street, counting her and I-a total of 4 homes outwardly expressing their support for the Biden ticket. My mom and I both had flags reading “ Restore the Soul of our Nation”.
My mother died on Saturday. Many of our neighbors, most of them with Trump signs, went out of their way these past few months to bring food to my moms house and even sat with her in her last hours. Her next-door neighbor, a dear friend with multiple Trump signs, took Mom’s Biden flag yesterday and planted it on her own lawn with the Trump regalia to outwardly make the point that love and family will never be divided over politics.
I know that at least on R——-Drive, we will be able to sit down and have a drink together no matter what the outcome of this election. And these last few months, I struggled to reconcile how these wonderful and warm friends and neighbors could support Trump because I know they are good people and I think he is a bad person. Everybody has to listen to their own conscience and make their own choice. I think what really matters is that you do it with dignity and understanding and respectfulness.

“And yes, that sort of thing, like those jeering mobs of Trump flag-wavers pissing the same vintage bile through bullhorns at polling sites in Florida, is a phenomenon exclusive to Trump’s camp.“
This morning at 11:10 AM my wife and I were driving on Palm Coast Parkway westbound waiting to turn left (south) on Old Kings Road, where there were two gentlemen surrounded by Republican candidate signs waving to pasers-by. In front of us was a older red car with Biden stickers all over the back bumper. The old man stuck his arm way out the window with the one finger salute. He in fact put a lot of effort into it. The two men saw him and just waved. The point is that it is in fact working both ways; it’s not exclusive to one side. As to the Trump parades, I believe they are in response to the left’s effort to silence everything from our enthusiasm to more importantly, the truth. The real Joe Biden has been exposed, with all of his corruption and perversion, and the leftist media attempts to cover up what would be the biggest story of the decade had it been Trump and his sons doing the same thing. The laptop IS Hunter Biden’s. The e-mails detailing meetings between Joe Biden and Hunter Biden’s business partners are real, proving Joe’s denial of knowing nothing about Hunter’s business dealings was a flat out lie. The pictures of Hunter smoking crack are real, which proves Bernie was right: the system is rigged. If it were you or I or our kids hooked on crack, you would all be stepping over us on the streets or driving by us at the corner of I-95 and PCP. But when you are Joe Biden’s son and a crackhead, you can still get multi-million dollar a year jobs and the press won’t ask any uncomfortable questions. That minutes-long video of Joe molesting women and children in plain sight is an egregious display of power: “I can grope your wife and daughter on national television and there’s not a damn thing you can do about because, after all I am Senator Joe Biden!” And you know what else? We’re not buying the media’s lies as the truth. They have totally destroyed their credibility trying to cover up for good old Joe. Even here, you continue to allude to some vague “conspiracy theories” when we know it’s not a conspiracy theory; it’s a conspiracy, and not even Flagler Live is willing to state the obvious: all a real reporter has to do is ask Biden, “Is the laptop Hunter’s and are the e-mails genuine?” That would pretty much end the issue, but instead you ask what his favorite flavor of ice cream is. I am a bit disappointed in you Pierre. You have sacrificed your journalistic integrity for a demented old man who never should have been installed, and that’s what happened, as your party’s presidential candidate. You are afraid if the truth, but we are not and will shout from the roof tops “We don’t believe you!” Or maybe we will just drive down the road in support of the only politician that has truly stood up and fought for the “common” man.

I think it’s funny as hell that the Dems take credit for what Trump has accomplished. They say that their candidate will make things better, but never explain how. If Biden’s last 47 years has done anything, it has taken away from the American people and lied and lied and lied. Just like the Dems are doing now. They lye to get your vote and then stab you in the back. They can not find anything that their party has accomplished for almost the past 12 years for the American people. You must be one of those “neighbors”, “better angels”, that Pierre was telling us about, but not to worry TWA, the foundation is already cracking.

I’ll pay your toll, meet you at the bridge.

Hello there “Trump wins again” from the real world. I can tell you are just like your “dear leader” by the way you were far too premature in your false pronouncement of his win, just like he did late on election night before even a majority of ballots had been counted! LOL! How do you feel now that Biden is just a whisper away from capturing at least 270 electoral votes and becoming President-Elect Biden?!?!?! As you so eloquently said (but couldn’t write grammatically correct), don’t get depressed, and if you’re going to jump off of the toll bridge, wear clean underwear. Hasta la bye bye baby!

The Trump/Pence caravans boggled traffic of people coming out to vote on election day, forcing people to make detours. To call that
“arrogant entitlement” is putting it mildly.
