Notably: The Flagler Beach City Commission is never quite dull and generally for better reasons than other local governments: there’s a bit less controversy, a lot less ideology and more work gets done there, but it was even cheerier when Suzie Johnston was mayor. These days she’s chairing the city’s planning board alongside other alums of local boards: Barbara Revels, who was a county commissioner for eight years, and Rick Belhumeur, a city commissioner for nine. Johnston is 45 today. Let’s hope someone at today’s meeting of the Planning Board thought of baking her a cake.

“I sat down in a booth, and the waitress shoved a menu in front of me. There wasn’t anything on it that sounded good, and anyway, one look at her and my stomach had turned flip-flops. I don’t know why it is, by God, but I can tell you how it is. Every goddamned restaurant I go to, it’s always the same way… They’ll have some old bag on the payroll-I figure they keep her locked up in the mop closet until they see me coming. And they’ll doll her up in the dirtiest goddamned apron they can find and smear that crappy red polish all over her finger-nails, and everything about her is smeary and sloppy and smelly. And she’s the dame that always waits on me. I’m not kidding, brother. It’s that way wherever I go.

–From Jim Thompson, A Hell of a Woman (1954).

Welcome to the standardized, sanitized, touch screen interface of overpriced inadequate nutrition and excess calories.

Don’t forget to have a blessed day; the standard farewell of soulless marketing degree inspired commerce — and life.

OMG! Pogo. . . a great description of McDonald’s. . . a place where humans are now actually slaves to machines.

While traveling, with a quick stop off the freeway (“free” in California, anyway), we wanted a quick cuppa, for cash. . . impossible! Turned around, jumped back in the car, and went to Denny’s at the next exit. Then I remembered. . . there’s a reason I never liked McDonald’s. . . even more so now!

Euronews (English) reports that this past Friday President Trump threatened a 25% tariff on EU cars.

According to the article, in July 2025, President Trump met with European Commission President von der Leyen at Turnberry, Scotland; they soon signed a trade pact that established, among other points, a 15% tariff on EU cars.

The chair of the European Parlaiment’s Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs, French member Aurora Lalucq, told the reporter:

“I don’t see how anyone can strike a deal with an administration that doesn’t keep its word. … The talking points we were given were that the deal would bring predictability for business. Yet since that much-hyped press conference in July 2025 between Ursula von der Leyen and Donald Trump, there’s been nothing particularly predictable about any of this.”

Make of this what you will.

From NBC News, May 5, 2026:
“WASHINGTON — For months, President Donald Trump portrayed the big new ballroom that he’s building on White House grounds as a gift to the nation, courtesy of patriotic private donors.“And by the way, no government funds,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office last November.
“These are all private individuals that put up a lot of money to build the ballroom,” he added. “Not one penny is being used from the federal government.”
But the gleaming 90,000 square-foot space that he repeatedly said would cost the public nothing may ultimately leave taxpayers on the hook for $1 billion, due to new security enhancements that are tied to the project. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, has released a long-term immigration and border patrol funding bill that includes $1 billion earmarked for security improvements accompanying the overall ballroom project.”
MAGA, please help me understand. Donald Trump said he was the “peace president”. We’re at war with Iran whether he and his minions acknowledge it or not. Did Donald LIE to us (you)?
Donald Trump (as quoted above) said the ballroom wouldn’t cost taxpayers a dollar. As of this month, Trump has supposedly raised $350M for his ballroom. Now we’re ponying up up to $1B for this ballroom. Again, did Donald LIE to us (you)?
I just saw news of a hospital in Louisiana that’s closing due to Trump’s Great Big Beautiful Bill funding cuts. I’m glad we’ve got a spare billion for the ballroom while we start closing hospitals in needy areas because it was more important to give more tax cuts to the wealthy.
This administration and the neutered Republicans in Congress are f—— all of us in so many ways that it’s hard to keep up. And, all the while, a lot of MAGA stands behind this charlatan like he’s a gift from God.
Enjoy your $4.50/gallon gas. I hear it’s on it’s way to $5.00/gallon and, if we’re all lucky, even higher.

      Hello Jim,
Several good points, but the hospital jab misses the target. You can’t blame Trump for everything.
Rural hospitals have been in a slow burning crisis for decades. Financial struggles and closures have intensified since 1980 due to shifts in Medicare spending and outpatient care. 2005-2010 saw nearly 200 facilities partially or fully close. 2010-2020 accelerated with 136 rural hospitals closing, in 2020 19 hospitals closed in a single year.
During the 2005-2020 timeframe Louisiana only lost 2.
The new crisis you referenced does put Louisianas rural hospitals in jeopardy.
Here’s reality. A hospital is a business. People using the facilities are supposed to pay. We do not have “free” healthcare. Nothing is free.
How far can the rubber band ( federal debt) be stretched before it breaks. We are there.
We are on the precipice of financial calamity and our leaders keep writing bogus checks. You and I can’t run our personal lives like Congress runs the government.
      This is only the beginning.

According to a Seeking Alpha story, Canada’s Prime Minister, Mark Carney, addressed a gathering of European Political Community Summit leaders convened in Yerevan, Armenia.

    He said, in part:

“We know nostalgia is not a strategy, but we don’t think that we are destined to submit to a more transactional, insular and brutal world. … The world is undergoing a rupture across several dimensions – integration is being used as a weapon by some and the rules are not constraining the hegemons. … It is my strong personal view that the international order will be rebuilt, but it will be rebuilt out of Europe.”

Make of this what you will.
