Roberta Kalva, 2011 Employee of the Year: Buddy Taylor Middle School

January 13, 2011 | FlaglerLive | Leave a Comment

I have an eclectic background, ranging from government service to a medical degree, but it wasn’t until I experienced the educational field as a substitute teacher and reading tutor, that I finally felt that this was the perfect match. Education was really the place for me and Buddy Taylor Middle School has become my second home. The school employees’ collective support and encouragement have been unflagging, from my growth in the Media Center to my personal mission to guide each and every student to their personal best. Reading allows them to explore all facets of this world and I feel honored to receive this award for doing what I do: coming to work and feeling proud of being a Flagler County school employee.

Not only am I a recipient of such a prestigious award, but most recently, I have also gained the title of “Breast Cancer Survivor.”

Throughout my treatment ordeal, I knew that my peers were there to give me hugs and encouragement, keeping my mind busy with my work, and most especially, allowing me to remain as “normal” as possible. I could not have done it without them. My immediate family, which includes my dearest partner, my husband, and three gorgeous children, are humbled and grateful for all that we have. Thank you Buddy Taylor and Flagler School District for making a difference in my life.
