Israel’s fate would be woeful, too, if it wants to be a flourishing, modern democracy. If Israel permanently relies on its army to subjugate the Palestinians, it would become an apartheid-enforcing pariah. Israelis carrying out daily acts of oppression punctuated by rounds of killing would themselves be corrupted. For two peoples locked in a violent embrace, peace is the only deliverance.”

I wondered if I should press him. That’s what journalists do. We’re worse than the media haters can imagine. We leave a message and when we don’t get an answer, we leave another and sometimes we just knock on a door on the other side of which, we know, is fear, or grief, or anger that does not want our questions. Our measuring gaze. But we want it. Their fear, their grief, their anger. Our measuring gaze. So we soothe, we cajole. We seek “access.” Open, sesame. Give us your story. Every journalist, the guilty ones, at least, knows what Janet Malcolm wrote in The Journalist and the Murderer: “Every journalist who is not too stupid or full of himself to notice what is going on knows that what he does is morally indefensible. He is a kind of confidence man, preying on people’s vanity, ignorance, or loneliness, gaining their trust and betraying them without remorse.” Since we know what Malcolm wrote we think our readers do too. Some do. Sneddon didn’t. Was he lying about his father’s memorial? Had he simply thought better of talking to a reporter? He should have. But I thought he was telling the truth, and I didn’t have the stomach anymore–I should say the heart-for that kind of story, so I offered my condolences and hung up. I wanted to follow rather than to find, to let the strange wind of the singing smelter set my course.
