Make Masks Mandatory Anywhere Public

July 4, 2020 | FlaglerLive | 146 Comments

universal masks
Leonardo would not have objected. (Ian Burt)

In the last 10 years either Flagler County or its cities, or all of them together, have banned the sale of synthetic marijuana and bath salts. They banned the sale of vaping products to people under 21. They tried to regulate out of existence pill mills and Internet cafes until the state effectively did so. They restricted medical marijuana shops to a few areas. They’ve regulated short-term vacation rentals. All in the name of public safety, all in the name of saving lives. In some cases, as with synthetic marijuana, the dangers were more exaggerated than real. There never was a synthetic marijuana epidemic, and medical marijuana shops pose no greater risk to a community than churches.

pierre tristam column flaglerlive.com flaglerlive The point is that local governments had the power to regulate, and they did so even when the evidence didn’t justify it. Now we have a pandemic on our hands. Unlike that list of supposed hazards above, the coronavirus is now among the leading killers in the United States, with 120,000 dead so far, at least 3,200 dead in Florida (the number is almost certainly an undercount) and one of the more reliable models projecting over 200,000 dead by the end of September, 18,000 in Florida. A few deniers aside no one doubts Covid’s lethality. The Fox-infected propagandists who still go around claiming it’s not much different than the flu are the sort of people who also claim we don’t have a race problem in this country. Deniers can be dangerous to your health, and mine.

The death numbers keep rising, and in Florida for the past two weeks new infections have been spiking to levels far beyond anything we saw at the previous peak of the epidemic in April. Not just spiking, but overwhelming what we’ve had before. We’ve had 33,000 new infections just in the last two weeks. Put another way: more than a third of all of Florida’s infections since the pandemic started have occurred in the last two weeks.

No, it’s not just because the state is testing more. It was testing more in late May, too, and we didn’t see these “astronomical” numbers, as Flagler County’s Jonathan Lord described them Wednesday. And no, it’s not because younger people are getting tested, as Gov. Ron DeSantis said in his astronomically denying press conference Saturday–one of his more acid performances of manipulation, contempt for evidence and sheer ignorance, and there’s been many as he continues to lawyer and politicize a disease without a single scientist or public health official at his side.

The spike is unquestionably due to the state reopening as fast and as broadly as it has, with hardly any mandated guidance to control the spread of the virus. Not then, not now.

In Florida, as in Texas and Arizona, the states with some of the highest spikes, DeSantis and fellow-governors have acted like quacks, taking their cues from Donald Trump, who thinks the virus will just “disappear” one day, maybe like the black tenants he hounded away from his rental properties when he was a slumlord. It hasn’t, it won’t, especially the way these governors are going about it.

The reopening is not wrong in itself. But its reckless manner is. Its allowances in a near-vacuum of mandatory safety requirements leaves it to the whims and ignorance of individuals to enact. It’s compounding earlier mistakes. The claim that hospitals are not overrun misses the point. This isn’t just about protecting hospitals. That’s the wrong measure. It’s about keeping people from getting violently sick and dying, no matter where or at what pace. Who cares if 1,000 people are dying over a span of 10 weeks instead of two, if in the end we still have 1,000 more people dead? Managing this pandemic isn’t about managing hospital ICUs. It’s about preventing deaths, any deaths, any time.

But our approach right now is indifferent to those numbers, especially since there are immediate, cheap, unintrusive and very effective means at hand to do something about it. I’m referring of course to masks. They should be a requirement anywhere in public, anywhere there’s a gathering, anywhere, to borrow the biblical line, two or more people are gathered in mammon’s name. Gainesville and Osceola County already have these mandates in place. Orange County is imposing the order starting tomorrow. What is Palm Coast waiting for? What is Flagler County waiting for? What’s our health department waiting for?

The fear here is not the virus. It’s offending people’s sense of personal freedom. But masks are no more intrusive than seat belts or prohibitions on smoking. They’re the equivalent of a minor act of respect toward your fellow-citizen. It’s courtesy by cloth. You’re not wearing one to protect yourself. Unless you have the more bunker-like masks on that health care workers wear, you’re wearing one to keep others from being exposed to your virus, should you be infected. It has nothing to do with restricting your freedom and everything to do with keeping you from infringing on that of others. As County Administrator Jerry Cameron put it Friday on the radio, “at the end of the day freedom doesn’t mean anything if you’re dead.”

“If you’re so worried about it, stay home.” No. If you’re so indifferent to others’ freedom, you stay home. I like the reaction of a passenger on the American Airlines flight from which Brandon Starka, one of those Kardashian equivalents of Trump mercenaries, was booted for refusing to put on a mask: “Put it on or get off.” You’re not free to yell fire in a theater. You’re not free to spew your droplets in a store, a meeting room, a house of worship. The irony is that most local governments are enforcing those rules in their own buildings.

Unfortunately, we still have a few local elected officials flagrantly ridiculing masks and using their positions as elected officials to do so, undermining the very message of their own emergency and public health officials. But a mandate doesn’t have to be martial law. It can be imposed the same way local authorities handled social distancing: with education rather than policing, but with the authority to do more. Our low infection numbers aren’t a reason not to do it. They’re the reason to do it, because these numbers will not remain this way otherwise, and with schools about to reopen. Enough denialism. More to the point: enough childishness. People are dying, and state government is criminally indifferent. It’s up to our local governments to act. It’s time for mandatory, universal masks in Flagler.

Please Flagler County do something about the lack of precautions being taken out there. Now the virus is attacking people in their 20s and 30s. I’m sure after what i saw yesterday in Flagler Beach that this is the case. Restaurants and bars with over flowing crowds and not a mask in sight. Hostesses and wait staff without protective gear. Mostly 30 somethings who will carry their germs to drug stores and grocery stores And gas stations that are frequented by most Flagler County residents.

I agree absolutely. Make Masks Mandatory in Florida, in public.
There’s a pandemic out there, it’s deadly for some, cases are spiking in Florida.
Mask wearing, or refusing to do so, isn’t or shouldn’t be a political issue. It’s about respecting and protcting each other and if you don’t respect fellow Americans you single yourself out as antisocial, unpatriotic even.

I don’t have a problem with wearing a mask. The problem will also lie in the fact that regardless of wearing a mask some my very well still contract the virus. Why?, The typically layperson hasn’t a clue the proper way to wear any PPE. I’ve seen people gloved up, wearing a mask, and repeatedly touch their face/mask, their key’s, wallet/purse, and just about anything/ everything in the public with those gloved hands. They then continue to open vehicles, place items inside, then drive still wearing those glove’s. I’m sure that when they get home the glove’s are still on, and then they touch everything in the house. We all know that the virus can live on surface’s for a little while. We also know that you should be changing out masks on a normal schedule/time frame. The more use, the more frequent change. This also depends on the type being used. So before the city’s/government once again impose another order, they themselves should take the time to educate the general public on proper PPE use. Education goes’ along way, even with proper PPE use we may overcome this virus. Just my thought’s

I truly believe that mandatory wearing of masks in public when the virus first started spreading, along with social distancing would have reduced the spread significantly or possibly ended it.

Yet it’s amazing how an entire industry cropped up out of thin air, to have a fashion war for masks that become contaminated. Looks like the Muslims were way ahead of the curve ?

    https://tesyhnet.com/collections/bandanas?

If all are going to be required to wear a mask, shouldn’t littering one be a criminal offense tantamount to germ terrorism. If one dies from an exposure, isn’t that criminal for the one who was the infected as carrier zero that caught it & spread it ? That would be those that drop them in carts or on the ground in a parking lot. Remember, Coronavirus can move 6 feet. Oh wait, 13 feet or as far as the wind will carry it airborne ? See parts of Flagler county reopened and now the battle cry is it’s spreading again, yet Advent ICU has no patients beyond normal expected capacity for anything requiring an ICU room. How many of the 15 ventilators that they ever had are even in use today ? They keep reporting infections/cases with flawed test kits.

So who had it and was spreading it ? I know it’s not in my home, so one of the individual families must have it, spread it to one of the other relatives locally and keep on compounding it. The assumption is someone not wearing a mask spread the current uptick/surge in Coronavirus ? How do we know it wasn’t someone wearing a contaminated mask and eventually the mask system broke down and it was masked people spreading it among themselves as ineffective mask conformists. If a mask gets filthy, even contaminated how often is it cleaned or disposed of properly ?

Absolutely masks should be required. I refuse to do business with any establishment that does not require masks for staff. There is mo way it is safe for restaurants to prepare and serve food to guests without masks
I am sorely disappointed in several restaurants that I supported during takeout only weeks that are now disregarding masing and social distancing guidelines. They will be remembered for their disregard when this is over. Take heed Beachfront, Oceanside and Tuscan by the sea.

You Said It!!!!!! People who are not wearing masks in public are SELFISH!!!! Like you said, it’s not about keeping you from getting sick, its you keeping in your own germs and not spewing them on others. If the government won’t make that call, I think those of us who believe in keeping others ‘safe’ need to start speaking out to the non-mask wearers when we see them indoors in public places!!! Come on people, read this article again. It says it all! Thanks Pierre

Isn’t the problem much bigger than whether you wear a mask? We went from lock down to full loose. People climbing over each other at restuarants, amusement parks and the beach. There was no middle ground.

Three months ago we should have limited cross county and state traffic and stuck with it. We should be limiting crowded situations. At the beach this morning cars were packed all along along A1A. There is no intelligent thought either way we look at it.

Sure mask have a place but it’s not the only solution.

People don’t like being forced to do something. You know what else is as deadly as Coronavirus? Obesity. Maybe outlaw food, period, and instead issue balanced meal packs three times a day.

  29. Sherry says

    June 21, 2020 at 5:19 pm

Thank you Pierre!!! Since our federal and local governments are much more concerned with money and political power than the health and lives of human beings, it is up to “US” to make not wearing a mask AND social distancing completely “Socially Unacceptable”! We also should be voicing our opinions to our local businesses and making sure the managers understand that they are putting us at un-necessarily higher risk by not requiring the wearing of masks AND social distancing.

To those who continuously say that Covid 19 is no worse than the Flu. STOP posting such complete garbage! We really don’t want to hear from you! Covid 19 is much more lethal!!! Over 120,000 have died in only FIVE MONTHS!!!!

    Here are some actual facts:

In the U.S., between April 2009 and April 2010, the CDC estimates there were 60.8 million cases of swine flu, with over 274,000 hospitalizations and nearly 12,500 deaths — that’s a mortality rate of about 0.02%.

The mortality rate for the novel coronavirus is much higher so far, around 2%. That may not sound like a big difference, “but when extrapolated, can mean millions more deaths.”

TOGETHER we can get through this! Lets make a pledge, here and now to do all we can to keep our neighbors and community safe.
In addition to personally wearing your mask and continuing to social distance. . . call DeSantis and make your voice heard:
    850 717 9337.

  30. Sherry says

    June 21, 2020 at 5:39 pm

Another thing we should be doing is calling our local city and county commissioners, since DeSantis is such a weakling. Why are our commissioners NOT requiring the enforcement of social distancing at local restaurants? They could act to mandate mask wearing and enforce social distancing at all businesses locally. I’ll bemaking some phone calls tomorrow. How about you?

The alt right has made not wearing a mask a political statement when all it really is, is a sign or ignorance with no basis in science and medicine. This started with trump because he knows he can manipulate his base by saying words that make no sense and doing dumb things that will incite them. It’s always about the election for him. In reality he is only using his followers and gaslighting them into believing wrong is right and vice versa.
If you found a lump somewhere on your body, would you ask Fox News or a politician what to do? Nah, you would go to an MD and ask them what to do.
How has America dumbed down to the point where they believe a lying, bigmouth bully, sex abuser with a couple personality disorders? I feel like every day is Opposite Day for trump and his followers. It gets old. It’s boring and it’s old and like trying to decipher the meaning of something that is simply just purely evil for evils sake.

You need to do some homework. Medical personnel wear a mask for upwards of 12 hours at a time, especially surgeons, and none of them are dying from carbon monoxide poisoning. And as far as the swine flu, it was estimated that they were 12,000 flu related deaths in United States 2009-2010. The COVID-19 death toll in the United States as of today is 119,075, only 3-4 months inTo the pandemic.

Carbon monoxide poisoning? How would carbon monoxide get in there? Yea if you lock yourself in a garage with your car running and you are wearing a mask you might die of carbon monoxide poisoning. But I’m pretty sure you would be just as likely if you weren’t wearing a mask…

I guess we should tell the doctors and nurses that they don’t need to wear masks anymore because we don’t want them to get “carbon monoxide“ poisoning.

But I’m encouraged by your recognition that yes, this is America, once a beacon of can-do hope and common sense. Maybe you can look past your (hopefully masked) nose and see that you’re one among 350 million in this country rather than a viral Rambo on a rampage. I could be wrong. The “Unmasked” may assume it is safe to be in physical contact with one another. Freedom of choice they say. However – like it or not – freedom of choice comes with responsibility. The Unmasked asymptomatic, infected COVID19 virus carrier does not know they are infected and may be spreading the virus with their uncontained aerosol and droplets. They are irresponsible, walking germ grenades. In fact, in mid-May the CDC said at the time that 35% of infected carriers are asymptomatic (that number can change.) https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2020/05/22/health/cdc-coronavirus-estimates-symptoms-deaths/index.html
On the other hand, The “Masked” know they are safely protecting The Unmasked from COVID19. I am one of The Masked. Therefore I have the freedom and responsibility to protect myself from The Unmasked since they refuse to reciprocate and protect me. For this reason, I was compelled to create a guideline to follow if I encounter The Unmasked in public spaces since there is no COVID19 leadership in either Florida or Washington to protect The Masked (such as mandatory mask wearing in public spaces.)
    My Guideline for the Unmasked:

    1. The Unmasked will not protect me. Therefore, to protect myself and stay safe, I am compelled to assume they are all potentially infected, asymptomatic virus carriers.
    2. Don’t risk speaking with The Unmasked-especially if they are not social distancing (spittle.)
    3. If The Unmasked is walking toward me, turn and walk away from them until I can distance myself by 6 ft.
    4. Do not touch anything I observed The Unmasked has touched (groceries, cart handles, touch pads and the like.)
    5. Do not use a public toilet stall if The Unmasked emerges from it.
    6. If by chance The Unmasked sneezes or coughs less than 6 feet away from me, take immediate precautions and discard the mask when safe.
    7. If possible, only shop in stores where masks are mandatory.
Thank you to our responsible Masked Floridians for practicing good citizenship by following CDC COVID19 recommendations!

Umm…No. Some people who don’t wear masks have done some homework and have also seen those wearing the masks either do so incorrectly or are touching the masks with their germ ridden hands. The masks harbor those germs. So while your sky is falling, I’ll continue to live free.

“While a surgical mask may be effective in blocking splashes and large-particle droplets, a face mask, by design, does not filter or block very small particles in the air that may be transmitted by coughs, sneezes, or certain medical procedures. Surgical masks also do not provide complete protection from germs and other contaminants because of the loose fit between the surface of the mask and your face.

Surgical masks are not intended to be used more than once. If your mask is damaged or soiled, or if breathing through the mask becomes difficult, you should remove the face mask, discard it safely, and replace it with a new one. To safely discard your mask, place it in a plastic bag and put it in the trash. Wash your hands after handling the used mask.”

The issue is: There is a surge in Covid-19 cases in Florida. If both you and I wear a mask when we come in contact
we may have less risk of infecting each other. If you don’t care if you catch the virus or care if you infect someone else you are foolish inconsiderate and obnoxious.

Look at the numbers this is a problem down south who always had the lockdown And strict measures. They opened up a little bit and got a spike. also a lot of NYers down there if you look at cellphone migration data.
A mask should be worn by those who are sick to prevent it from spreading.
If you are not sick, and are healthy a mask is worse for you.

The worse offenders are the boaters flying large Trump flags. Boats are overloaded and obviously not all members of a single household. No masks, no social distancing. The people show both their contempt of society, their low intellect. Again, follow the leader who has been a total failure in any measurement of life, marriages, children, bankruptcies, not to mention his criminal and moral behavior. What is the Flagler County Officials, Palm Coast, and the Health Department waiting for or do they want everything to be shut down again for their lack of leadership in this growing virus in the State of Florida? I am shocked to see people in public places not wearing masks, these government agencies need to start doing their jobs, and safety of our community is one of their jobs.
Ron DeSantis and Donald Trump are both reckless and have been from the get-go, and they continue to be to day. DeSantis blamed it on more testing as Donald, DeSantis then blamed the people the picked vegetables, now he is blaming the young people. Hey DeSantis how about we blame you for following Donald’s orders and pretending the virus will go away if you both don’t talk about it.
You both have no business being in politics if you aren’t in the best interest of its people. Your ratings as well as Donald’s are gong down because of how you both handled this serious virus. Instead of just listening to Fox news try listening to other channels that are telling the truth.

Why in world do people continue to argue that we should not do “the right thing” because there have also been other terrible things? Do they not understand how incredibly lame and idiotic they sound?

Don’t try and keep your neighbors alive and well from Covid 19 because people die from (NON-Contiguous) cancer or automobile accidents, or other viruses. . . when maybe we should have learned to wear masks. Should we never learn from past mistakes? Should we never try to do better? Don’t do anything about “Climate Change” because there was an ice age millions of years ago. Meaning, don’t learn and evolve and don’t try to make our people, our nation and the world a safer, better place for us all . . . because “other” bad things are happening, or have happened in the past. Really?

What kind of asinine logic is that? OR, are they just mindlessly copying and pasting from FOX again and again and again?

Those who continue to refuse to wear a mask and social distance can no longer claim ignorance. The vast majority of MEDICAL EXPERTS agree that we can lower the risk of spreading this extremely contagious and lethal virus by wearing a mask and social distancing in crowded public places.

Those who choose to follow “your” president into the gutter /the hospital/the morgue are showing yourselves. We all “see” you because you are “naked” without a mask. “Naked” of caring for others! “Naked” of compassion! “Naked” of community spirit! “Naked” of true Patriotism! You can fly your pseudo American flag till the cows come home, but all that flag waving doesn’t make you any kind of patriot unless you are willing to step up and take care of the health and well being of your neighbors!

I’ve heard that “back in the day” whenever a kid got chicken pox all the moms in the neighborhood would take their kid to that house so that they would get exposed. I’ve also heard people say our immune systems need exposure to bad things. Perhaps that’s why, some years ago, the experts advised us against using antibacterial soap – it kills both the good and the bad bacteria. My parents are 92 ans 83 years old and they have not left their home since this began. SMART! VERY SMART. For us otherwise healthy people who are distancing and masking – are we actually denying our immune systems the exposure required to develop antibodies? Are we, the healthy masked men, women and children, setting ourselves up to suffer horribly when the REALLY BIG BUG comes along? Are we?

  81. Sherry says

Mia Culpa!!! Please understand that there is a group of us who are really exhausted and frustrated from almost 4 months of researching and posting actual FACTS. And, then “asking”and “pleading” again and again and again for our neighbors to put aside faulty political information and join us in doing all we can to keep one another safe and well.

All too often we are then faced with an entrenched mind set that continuously posts misleading information and illogical arguments in an attempt to justify needlessly endangering our lives, along with all the precious ones in our community.

Believe me, if I could find the words that would miraculously convince people to truly care for one another enough to do a very simple thing like wearing a mask and social distancing. I would climb up on my roof and shout out those MAGIC words, loud and clear.

Consider the possibility that IF we had a government (at every level) that was not corrupt, that was HONEST with us, and that provided us with clear LEADERSHIP based on FACTUAL information from MEDICAL EXPERTS, we would be much more united in understanding the best course of action. We could then have a cooperative path to doing what is best for our common interests. This scary hardship is dividing us and making us weaker in many, many different ways.

Our local commissioners and mayors “could” provide us with the leadership in this vacuum, but it appears they cannot even be bothered to require enforcement of the flimsy “guidelines” passed down from our very weak governor. No matter how you slice it and dice it, the number of people seriously affected (financially or health wise) by this virus are NOT going down substantially as they could be.

The question is. . . . what are “WE” willing to come together to do about it. . . because, we certainly can’t count on our government and unfortunately, we also cannot count on ALL of our neighbors to protect us.

Please stop dumping your masks, gloves, wipes and other PPE in busniesses parking lots. It’s unsightly and it’s littering. Put yourself in my place. Or the poor cashier who is sent out to clean the parking lot because there are piles of debris.

It’s not part of our job. it’s not job security or whatever other snide self serving remarks you might make. That’s just an asshat remark to make yourself feel self entitled. Gnerally what happens is enough crap gets thrown in a parking lot. Code Enforcement or the property manager sees it and files a complaint. Then it takes us away from regular duties in order to take care of your laziness. It’s actually littering by the way. And against the law. It’s just not enforced. Not to mention why would we want to handle your nasty stuff if you don’t?

Everyone has enough grocery bags around to throw a pile of them in your trunk. Or wherever. If you can’t dispose of PPE properly in a trash can then please wait till you get to your vehicle and bag it. Then toss in your own can. It’s not really that hard. Honest folks!!

We are finding this stuff not only on parking lots. But around our ponds and drainage systems. It’s not bidegradable. And it stays until picked up.

My 82 year old mother caught covid19 in a nursing home and after 6 positive tests and no symptoms she finally had 2 negative tests 14 days apart. She smoked from age 13 to 46 (she had a stroke at age 46 and never recovered). If she survived, when 19 others in her nursing home died and over 80 residents tested positive, I would call that miraculous. Doesn’t mean I’m going to go out gallivanting around where others could infect me. 51 non smoker, avid outdoors person. I won’t set foot in a store. Not only do I not want to get it, I do t want to transmit it (of somehow I’m a carrier). I’m claustrophobic and tried a mask on several times and just couldn’t do it. In order to gain the privilege of driving on public roads, one must agree to the rules of operating a motor vehicle while also demonstrating the ability and knowledge.

I suppose comparing obesity to COVID-19 is a bit of a false equivalency but that doesn’t detract from the point that coercion is always met with resistance if not outright hostility. If you want people to wear masks then local governments could start by distributing them. I will wear mask in a store or a place that requires one…. but as soon as I hit the parking lot it is off. It bothers me about these masks …. how often are they changed and or cleaned? Having been a nurse for 45 years, I see a lot of breaks in techniques of mask wearing. Some I have seen are gross…and dirty and they can not be safe and the people around them can not be safe either… and wearing them under the nose does not really help keeping anyone safe and the masks are not effective when they are damp from being worn too long and yet everyone is critical about those not wearing a mask and they are probably the very people who trash the beaches and parking lots with their gross masks and gloves. I pretty much practice safe distancing and I believe sunshine and fresh air is nature’s way of staying well and staying healthy. If someone is not performing to your strict and controlling standards then stay away from them or stay home.

This just in; yesterday in central Fla a bar near the University of Central Florida has had its state alcoholic beverage license suspended for violating reopening guidelines. Awesome,. Its so simple, wear a little mask over your nose and mouth, protect yourself and others, . For those that refuse to wear a mask, when you infect someone you love and they end up in the hospital , where they are without family as you can’t visit them, and you find out you are positive, set back for a second and think., Maybe the mask would have prevented this. I bought plastic total face shields for my friends and family. You can even drink your beer with on of them on. Covers you eyes also, as opposed to the filthy cloth masks.
So you can have opinions, but stay away from me if only to make it appear you have common sense.

Not true. Do your research. Also advise to study the act of breathing aka respiration. We breath in oxygen and breathe out Carbon Dioxide. So, unless you’re operating an internal combustion engine behind that mask or run your vehicle in an enclosed building you’re not breathing out carbon monoxide. Silly. Read books.

Comments like yours, just proves how gullible people can be. Panicking is what the mainstream media expects of ignorant, indoctrinated sheep. I didn’t need Covid 19 and the media to know I have wash my hands frequently. However, people like you, had to be told how and when to wash yours. Why the hatred for those that don’t wear a mask? What’s really behind your being so worried that others aren’t?? Nothing to do with safety, and everything to do with trying to control others. Wear your mask if you feel you have to, but don’t try to tell others what to do.

I agree everyone should be wearing a mask. It should be mandatory all over the U.S. We had 5500 cases in Florida the other day. Even though we have the lowest amount of cases in Flagler county are you willing to risk it getting higher and higher? Most people in Palm Coast are not wearing masks or social distancing. Have you driven by the newly open Cantina Louie? The parking lot has been packed every day and they are parking across the street on the grass. There is no way there is social distancing going on in there. Wear a mask! Do you really want your parents, grandparents to get this because you were out and about without a mask on?

Deniers? Please give me some statistics that make this so lethal you can’t walk outside/inside without a mask? I’m shocked how very few people actually research for themselves or use critical thinking skills. Instead let hateful writers like yourself try to turn fellow citizens on each other, by virtue signaling. Unfortunately, far too many have already taken the bait.

Just because YOU are afraid of something, doesn’t make the rest of us dangerous to your health. If your mask works, why do you care if I don’t wear one? Same “anti” vaccine propaganda they’ve been spewing for years. Be afraid of the healthy. It’s nonsense.

People read and watch Dr Fauci, flip-flop about mask, read the box label on the mask (DO NOT protect against coronavirus) and YOUR face cloth mask certainly don’t work. Read peer review articles from Physicians, there are many of them out there with opposing opinions that aren’t bought and paid for by lobbyists. Unless you’re wearing an N95 mask, your “droplets” are the problem too.
    -Think for yourselves!

One last thing. Flager live should be ashamed for allowing such biased writing. Nothing like trying to write a pro-mask article while bringing up politics, race baiting and bashing people who think independently.

Thank you Pierre for reporting the truth about what are our officials waiting for? Since this virus started we have witnessed Trump ignoring it and said it will disappear, we have watch DeSantis refusing to care about the safety of our communities which he took an oath to do. Now were are watching our county officials also ignoring their responsibilities of the safety of its citizens they too took an oath to protect. It is a very sad and pathetic time to witness the White House, the Governor of Florida and now county officials ignoring the safety of its citizens.
We have listened to many professional medical people proving that masks are a way of slowing down the spread of this virus and people refusing for their own selfish reasons not to. It is so pathetic to those that don’t care about the safety of others and we are witnessing it now.

The biggest problem now in my opinion, is the constant fumbling of our elected government personnel. They HAD a HAVE right now the chance to fix some of the mistakes of the recent past concerning this virus but choose to constantly make things political and further divide the nation during this pandemic.

It’s not about Democrat, Republican, nor winning an election at this point. It’s only about the lives of the humans that make up America, in all its diversity.

I can only HOPE that one day soon, the only intention our government has is the protection of the people that make up this nation when it comes specifically to decision making as it pertains to this and any other potential mass threat.

A spike on Sat? 1 new case on Sat in Flagler I believe? How about we take our cues from quacks like biden who thinks stopping travel from China (the source) is racist and a bad way to help stop the spread. Wearing a mask, should be a common sense thing not a government thing. Goggles should also be worn. The best would be a full face mask with bio filters. Nothing will be 100% protective. The racist Fox people are correct about the “race” problem in this country. How many years has Affirmative Action been used in this country? How many minorities are put ahead of whites in lines for college education, and jobs. There are and always will be instances of discrimination. But using said instances to take further control of the peons and to advance a leftist social agenda is unacceptable. Of course diverse opinions that diverge from yours won’t see the light of day because there is no fluff or BS allowed here.

If we are all required to wear masks How Are We Being Singled Out? We’ll all look the same, because we will all be wearing masks. To help in reducing the spread of Covid-19. It’s called a community protecting each other.
How is that un-American? Didn’t Trump say we are fighting a war, don’t Americans work together against their enemies, visible or invisible?

Now that Palm Coast, Bunnell and Flagler Beach have made masks mandatory in public spaces, it is time for Flagler County to make masks mandatory in the unincorporated areas of the County. Masks reduce the risk but only if everyone is wearing them. I will start going to the Publix in Palm Coast if the Publix in the Hammock does not require folks to wear masks that enter the store. Lets hope within a short period of time, Flagler County Commissioners adopt the same policy, so masks are required throughout the County in public spaces. If infections are reduced by some amount, it is worth the inconvenience.

Why aren’t churches included in the wearing of masks mandate? I was blown away with what I saw in our church this past weekend. The music prior to the sermon was great but the singers and instrumentalists were not wearing masks for obvious reasons. What I didn’t like was what I saw in the very first row closest to the stage, there was a family including adults and a number of children that were not wearing masks. Why don’t people realize that the coronavirus germs can spread in church just as much as it can in any other public gathering? I am wondering why the ushers didn’t seat these and other people without masks further back and away from the stage?

  142. Have Compassion says

    July 22, 2020 at 10:14 am

The purpose of masks is not to protect the wearer, but to protect the surrounding people from the possible pathogens they may carry. If people wearing masks got sick, that means the people around them were not wearing masks.

Wearing masks is not an issue of freedom or suppression. It is simply having the humility to recognize that anybody could be an asymptomatic carrier (including yourself) and having the COMPASSION AND EMPATHY to protect your community by wearing a mask.

If anything, you are infringing on your fellow community members rights to pursue a happy, healthy life by refusing to wear a mask in public, as the mask protects everyone around you. Masks are most effective when everybody bands together with a common goal to protect the community. It only takes one selfish person not wearing a mask to affect the health and safety of an entire store full of people.

The opposition to mask wearing is an issue of lacking empathy for others and lack of proper education about the pandemic. Wearing a mask is NOT a political statement.

  143. Have Compassion says

    July 22, 2020 at 10:24 am

Reducing 201,000 human lives to 0.96% to make them sound insignificant is productive to nobody. How is 201,000 people at risk of death okay? 201,000 people who are unwell, scared, and at risk of spreading poor health and fear to others. You might feel differently if you or a loved one was one of 201,000. Not to mention that number has drastically increased. A statistics class will help nobody in this case, but listening to people who have studied medicine and epidemiology their entire life might.
