The Flagler County Youth Center-produced annual talent show at the Flagler Auditorium Thursday evening featured 29 performances, 45 performers, and one higher purpose: raising money for Carver Gym in South Bunnell, the neighborhood’s community center soon to re-open as a youth center similar to the one on the campus of Palm Coast Parkway. That purpose raised $1,000 Thursday evening which, in addition to the more than $3,000 the Carver Foundation has already raised, is bringing the foundation close to its $5,000 goal for the year.

With Melissa Boyles and Brandon Riddick of Flagler Palm Coast High School presenting, most performers chose to stick to the standards of talent shows: singing and dancing. A couple of exceptions proved winning for their performers: In the senior division, Krystene Maceda’s solo performance of Chopin’s Waltz in C-sharp minor for piano won her the Entertainer of the Year award, while Xavier Ryan’s piano performance of a sonatina won him third place. Charisma Borgmann, whose father, Chris, was among the earliest voices clamoring against the closure of Carver Gym last summer, won second place for her performance of “Alive,” in which she was joined by Rashod Cooks–who added some verses of his own to the song, dedicating them to his brother.
In the junior division, it was all singing and rapping: Kayla Byrne of Old Kings Elementary won the Entertainer of the Year award for her “Jar of Hearts.” Davianna Campbell also of Old Kings, won second place for “Billionaire,” an appropriate song considering the money Campbell, the reigning Junior Miss Flagler County, has been raising for innumerable causes in the past year, many of them in conjunction with the youth center’s director, Cheryl Massaro, who directed Thursday’s show–and featured a video presentation of Campbell’s achievement, and a $100 savings bond for her, while the audience was awaiting the judges’ verdicts.
Athena and Simone Gonzales of Wadsworth Elementary won third place for their rapping performance of “Me I Us.”
The full list of performers and winners is below the evening’s image gallery.

When we get to the point of understanding the impact that the effrot to save Carver Gym has had on mobilezing this community; we will also understand the role that Flaglerlive has played in keeping this issue in the news I do not believe without the reporting of Flaglerlive some of this may not have happened. Thanks Flaglerlive!

BRAVO! BRAVO! Flagler ‘s youth got talent! Last night the performances were outstanding. The Junior Division performers set the bar high for the seniors and they met the mark. I was especially moved by Kayla Byrne’s performance of “Jar of Hearts”. She has a mature voice for her age. Krystene Maceda was outstanding. The Flagler Youth String Quartet was just beautiful. KUDOS to Xavier! And I want to play guitar like Jonathan Weaver. Just great! In all a wonderful evening with our FUTURE STARS!
