More than three weeks out from the election I’d have thought it a safe time to write about all the things I won’t miss about Donald Trump–the lying, the mendacity, the malice, the bigotry, the narcissism, the cruelty, the trolling for enemies, the cowardliness, the scapegoating, the indifference to governing, the leer of sadism and lust for demeaning all for the pleasures and powers of the one.
As Anthony Burgess (of “A Clockwork Orange” fame) put it, “A Caligula or a Nero is recognized as a temporary aberration, a disease that cannot hold power for long because it can choose nothing but the destructive.” But Trump is nowhere near ending. He started running for reelection with his American carnage inaugural four years ago. Eighty million Americans sent him packing. He’s already running for 2024 on the wreckage of his Lost Cause. His refusal to concede is his first campaign ad. As Trumpism goes, as Trumpism has always been, destruction is the strategy. The more of it the more fealty among those swarms that didn’t send him packing and that now act like modern-day flagellants, their pogroms for now limited to murdering reality. It’s Jonestown writ large.
On they march with flags for whips, fabricating stories in tandem with his or Newsmax’s or the conspiracy theory of the moment. Hard to tell them apart anymore. It wouldn’t have made a difference if Biden had won a landslide, taking Texas, Florida and Greenland for good measure. The only thing Trump would not have called a fraud, as he said it himself as far back as September, is if he’d won. Of course he knows he’s lost, of course his followers know it too. This isn’t about that. It’s about keeping the destruction going. Without it, there’s no Trumpism. And Trumpism is here to stay and keep doing what it’s been doing for the last four years–seethe and corrode and decimate in the name of a cult freebasing in the predeterminism of its own delusions.
It is the psychosis of nihilism, of the fanatic, of the suicide bomber (as long as he’s not the one blowing up), enabled and amplified by his amen corners in Congress and governorships and state houses where his basest collaborators are doing vote-counting of their own. They know the score. Their servility is a symptom of their self-hatred: They know they’re lost at the next primary if they don’t embrace the lie. These are the same Republicans who swallowed whole Trump’s birther conspiracy–not because they believed it. No one did, not even Trump. But because they saw nihilistic gold in it, the gold of white grievance and self-pity that powered his 74 million votes, and without which they have no chance in two and four years. There’s no doubt about those votes. They’re not fraudulent. They only voted for a fraud. But a fraud that glows: even Nero was hugely popular among the populist mass, when no one ever accused a Roman of discerning fact from circuses. Why govern when you can rage even as America burns.
The covid-19 pandemic is fast approaching 300,000 deaths in the United States alone, and six times as many worldwide. The third wave in the United States is overwhelming the numbers of the first two combined. Americans have been dying at a rate of two 9/11’s a week until now. By the time the third wave crests, we could be approaching a 9/11 a day.
What has our acting president been doing just since Nov. 4? There’s an actual tally. He tweeted 550 times, three-quarters of those variations on the same lies and attempts to subvert the results of his defeat. He had lunch with his amoebic vice president a couple of times. He made a cameo at a ceremony for the veterans he called losers. He took part in a couple of virtual meetings. He treasonously kept Biden from accessing intelligence reports and getting his transition under way until this week. He pardoned the latest executioner in his seraglio of corruption. And he played golf six times. Meanwhile, 25,000 more Americans died of covid, about 230 of them for every hole of golf he played as the pandemic raged. The guy who boasted of holding five rallies a day during the campaign can’t be bothered to worry about a daily massacre. Maybe it’s best. He never had a clue anyway.
But getting Trumpism out of there is a different story. With Trump it’s always been about Twitter and TV. His own show. It’s being cancelled, and his feed is about to be shut down. Pathetically, he’s doing what he can to keep that from happening, so he’s not conceding. More pathetically his followers are admiring him for it.
In less demonic times when the country would go off the rails, as when Nixon, drunk and suicidal, was asking Kissinger to kneel and pray with him, a group of his own party’s leaders trooped to the White House and told him that for the good of the nation, it was time to go. Even Richard Nixon, until then as much of a Caesar as the country had known, knew it was time, and left. No one is trooping up to the White House now, except bootlickers. No one is really surprised that Trump’s petulance is metastasizing. Cancers of his type always do. But you’d have expected his vassals to rise above their station for once and put country first. But no. What passes for Republican leadership is not only enabling the subversion of the election. It’s dumpster-diving it for electoral strategies to come.
Liberals would be fools to think the election was a turning point. It’s why the election result even for us lefties has nothing exuberant about it. To the contrary. I sometimes catch myself wishing Trump had won, so he could complete the demolition and reveal himself the irrefutable hoax he’s been all along–like Andrew Johnson did with more efficiency in his one miserable term–rather than leave his successor trying to fix his wreckage while Trump plays martyr. Biden may be to Trump what Pertinax was to Commodus: a healer of cruel, venal brutality. But like Pertinax, Biden will find his assassins in the praetorian catacombs of Mitch McConnell and his robotic clones across the land.
The next four years will be as much a trial of democracy as the last four, just more diffuse, the cancer cells of Trumpism poisoning states and localities, as we’ve already seen locally in the last couple of years. Not the America we know? If you’ve been paying attention since 1980, it’s exactly the America we know. As Malcolm X famously said of a more literal assassination in 1963, it’s the chicken coming home to roost.

I fear that all you say is true. Probably my most fervent and last hope is that enough incontrovertible evidence will come forth regarding his corruption and crimes, during a time when he is not in power, that his stronghold will be loosened upon the rest of our elected officials. Not that it excuses them for their lack of moral compass and ethics, I don’t know exactly what it will take to bring this country together again. In my lifetime, the response to 9/11 was probably the most cohesive I have ever seen America. And you would think that the COVID-19 pandemic would have brought people together but the malignancy that is Trumpism kept that from happening.
B from PC says
Calling people bootlickers and pathetic is not going to unite. Accusing someone of doing wrong, while you are doing what you said was wrong and thinking no one will notice, not bringing people together. I try to pay attention to what all sides have to say and use a little common sense (something the so called educated class is lacking in my view) I believe the conservative group earns a days pay for a days work, meaning they can get stuff done. They don’t talk to me about doing, they do.

My fear us that Trump will continue his madness and disruption to keep his base fired up, and will keep causing problems that the media will keep broadcasting 24/7 and we will have another 4 years of Hell and that Biden will wind up on the back burner.
The media should not “follow” Trump and report his every move which helps Trump to spread his anger and hatred. TV should refuse to broadcast his actions and social media should clamp down on some of his lies and nasty provocations.

I think trumpism will disappear after a year or two…just like the Tea Party.
William Moya says
The Tea Party “disappeared” because of its unparalleled success, it took over and transformed what used to be a Center-Right Party into a full fledge Right-Wing one, it may not be unique, historically, but at the very least very unusual. Progressives have been unable to move the Dems at all.
marlee says
The tea party has been left dead by the side of the road, one of the many casualties of the presidency of Donald Trump.
Jimbo99 says
Close to 75 million votes for Trump is not a disappearing act. Biden may have 80 million popular votes, but that only means the nation is nearly divided. People obviously weren’t voting for Trump vs Biden, but for their policies. One has to wonder about how many of the 11 million illegals in the USA to get amnesty & citizenship as a priority in what looks to be Biden’s 1st 100 days in office were allowed to vote on Nov 3rd.

Many Americans most be living in some parallel universe than the author. From the day PRESIDENT Trump was elected, we have been told he was illegitimate. Your ignorance and denial about what actually happened at BLM protests doesn’t change the true facts about what went on. When BLM protests were researched after the fact; it was found very few BLM participants were involved in the looting, rioting and burning (police records were checked). What was found was outside factions coming into these events to make trouble and to hijack and damage the BLM cause. Extreme far right groups like Boogaloo Bois, Proud Boys and White Supremist groups came in to disrupt and hijack the BLM protests; they are the ones who often started the looting, burning and violence. There was another factor also found at the BLM protests, the local criminals and bad people came out to take advantage of situation and did a lot of the looting. This was again evidenced in police reports.

Welcome back, Pierre. I cannot articulate the point you’re making any better, not even close. I’ll just add that some of us, alas too few, made the argument that Trump (Trumpism) is a symptom of the political system we inherited and that we live under to this day, baking in racism, and the inability to change the Constitution democratically (by plebiscite), this created cultural insularity (exceptionalism) masked by an exceedingly affliction to religion. Unfortunately, I don’t think Biden and his team (Liberals) are up to the task of guiding America through an uncertain future.
Mike Cocchiola says
Trump may go away, but the disease that led to his election in 2016 still lives in the people he attracted to his sociopathic bizzaro-world of hate, fear and exclusion; of racism, xenophobia, misogyny. We spent years dumbing down and preparing people for his hateful and ruthless vision of America and we paid the price.
Trump will fade away, but “Trumpism” will roil America for a long, long time. We have to keep beating it back until this country regains its sense of purpose as a beacon to all of inclusion, freedom, enlightened leadership and hope for the future.

I do not fear a presidential run by Donald Trump in 2024. Even if he does live long enough to attempt another run, I believe the people will have tired of his crass ways. However, while Trump may wither; Trumpism will not.
Those who say Trumpism will fade away need only look to the resurgence of Nazism, Jim Crow and White Supremacy to see the fallacy in their ideas.. These beliefs may slip below the surface for a time but they are always there, waiting for someone to stoke the fear, incite the rage and light the fuse. For a bumbling, incoherent nonsensical fool, Trump did a pretty good job of bringing these demons back to life.
What will it take to quash these fears? Why do white men with absolutely no ‘southern’ blood in them race around with confederate battle flags on their pickups? Why does a shrinking white population fear the growth of Latino, Asian and African communities in our country? How can we scream that ‘Jews will not replace us’ but then support Israel in its illegal land grab? How can we support the countless regimes that have failed to promote basic human rights? How can we coddle Russia, North Korea and Turkey while turning our back to the EU? How many of you do not understand that without the French involvement, this country never would have risen? I do not know the answers but I would speculate that the underlying fear is the loss of White Privilege. That base instinct that tells us as White folk that we are better than those other groups because of our skin color or the zip code where we were born. Where the hell do we get off thinking that? It is what we were taught, “white is right”, but is it? No, it is not.
My true fear is that another will come along with the ability, personality and charisma that Trump could never master to take Trumpism to a new height. Just think how effective Trump could have been if he were more like one of those television preacher types. Smooth, articulate, easy on the eyes and ears; the type who never offends anyone but can reach into their souls and play on every fear they hold. Imagine the power that person could wield. I don’t know who that person is, yet I know he is out there biding his time, waiting for a bit of the shine to wear off Trump so that he can slowly worm his way into our fragile society and rip our hearts our before we ever feel the tear of the first claw. If we are to continue with this great experiment, and re-build our role as a responsible leader in this world then we must start with building an inclusive society where everyone feels value and purpose. Everyone, yes, everyone.

Speaking of being fooled….”Biden has decisively won the presidency. There is no way for Trump to overturn the results of the election, and his campaign’s post-election lawsuits have gotten dismissed left and right.
That hasn’t stopped him from launching an “Official Election Defense Fund” and bombarding his supporters with fundraising appeals to supposedly finance the campaign’s ongoing litigation.
BUT THE FINE PRINT TELLS A DIFFERENT STORY:
“60 percent of a donation to Trump’s “Official Election Defense Fund” goes to Save America, Trump’s new leadership Political Action Committee that he set up less than a week after the election. The other 40 percent goes to the Republican National Committee. So if someone donates $500, Trump’s PAC gets $300, the RNC gets the other $200, and not a cent actually goes to the election defense fund.
Donations only start going to that fund once Trump’s PAC reaches the legal contribution limit of $5,000 – and the RNC gets $3,000.
This means a supporter would have to donate over $8,000 before any money goes to the fund they think they’re supporting.
Apparently enriching himself on the taxpayer dime for the past four years wasn’t enough for Trump. Now he’s lining his pockets by attacking our elections and undermining our democracy — and swindling his supporters every step of the way.” (Credit to Robert Reich, former Labor Secretary.
It’s really sad that so many are fooled by this con man – his contempt for his “supporters” is clear by this grift – soliciting your money for his “election defense fund” but diverting it to other uses is like a middle finger in your faces. Have you made your contribution yet, oh, proud one?

So now you’ve moved onto Newsmax and OAN since they still claim election fraud and your feckless orange god will prevail. What a bunch of losers just like Trump! It was a choice America or Trump and the voters picked America! Country over party. This was the safest and most secure election because for one paper ballots cannot be changed unlike online voting machines that their programs were guarded like Fort Knox thanks to a bunch of real patriots that put country over party. Trump cannot hide from the criminal and civil charges facing him when he leaves office, the pardons he’s giving out can be undone by judges if they were given out to hide his crimes, the next AG will be independent of loyalty to the president and allowed to do their job and bring Trump up on charges. The constitution does not allow for self pardon so that’s out too! Not to mention he can’t outrun the International Crimes Court which is waiting for the way he locked asylum seekers in cages, separating their children to cages like impounded animals. Crimes against humanity but you wouldn’t know about that cause he brainwashed you into thinking brown people are rapists and drug dealers. All that’s left for him is to exile in Russia, Cuba, Venezuela or North Korea as we don’t have extradition treaties with them. His fame will fade away but Trumpism will be fought on a daily basis and every complicit senator, house of representatives, state governments and local governments that continue to wear the Red Hat of Trumpism is now a target as sane republicans, independents and liberals will no longer tolerate it. The answer to these past four years of corruption, lying, amorality, incompetence and moronic behavior is not in a debate with Republicans who so willingly championed his racist, xenophobic and autocratic behavior, but in the next generation of eighteen to thirty five year old citizens who will be moving up the political and corporate ladders as our older generation who supported this conspiracy agenda fades away. I see it clearly in my children and their friends who have not suffered the same racial, religious and incomprehensible wars that the baby boom generation was subjected to at great cost. They seem to inherently understand the danger of climate change, misogyny and racial and immigrant hatred while espousing passionate and pragmatic solutions to these corrosive attitudes. You princesses do realize that your comments have not aged well? Biden is the modern day Commodus, a complete disaster from his first day until his last. He lives in complete delusion of his failure and ineptness. He tries to distract the public with spectacle and nonsense. He is a complete dumpster fire and is a sign of a falling empire.
Pierre Tristam says
Meanwhile Trump was a Marcus Aurelius, right? But you got the falling empire right either way, thanks in good part to maga barbarians inside our gates.
Pissed in PC says
Pierre you do realize that the orange bloatius maximus base will never learn. They’re still drunk on his toxic racist, misogynistic, fear mongering kool aid. What I ask these suckers and losers is if he’s really a billionaire then why are they stupid enough to keep filling his fake super PAC with their social security dollars to pay for his legal bills. They never read the fine print that he can spend 90 cents of every dollar raised on his personal living expenses while they sit and bitch that they don’t have money to buy gas for their jacked up, stupid looking trucks with their losers flag on the back. But hey they love their socialist benefits like fixing bridges, roads, hurricane relief, fixing the beach, pier, providing extra funds to LEOs, cutting the price of their prescription drugs. They don’t get it that coming out of a pandemic caused global inflation due to supply chain issues as production was cut. These are topics you’ll never hear on Fox News BS factory, OAN and Newsmax for conspiracy theorists. The cult is a lost cause and we can only hope that Darwin isn’t finished with them yet.
Laurel says
DR: Clearly, comments about Trump have aged very well. I understand that Trump is done, even in oh so red Flagler County. His baggage is so heavy, even his cult is starting to wane.
