Second Multi-Vehicle Pile-Up in 2 Weeks, Involving 3 Trailers, on Palm Coast Part of I-95

Trailers, cars and I-95 are not mixing well in the few miles between Palm Coast Parkway and State Road 100. Last Saturday night it was a five-vehicle wreck involving 14 people, two miles south of the parkway exit, in the northbound lanes. Early this morning, it was a four-vehicle wreck, also in the northbound lanes, a couple of miles further south, this time involving three trailers and one sedan, and involving at least six people.

The uncertainty about the people involved is due to the fact that the car that started the chain reaction hit a trailer from the back. But the combination trailer kept driving, likely unaware that it had been struck. So the trailer’s identity or its occupants are unknown to the Florida Highway Patrol, which investigated the wreck. No one was seriously hurt, but by the time the chain reaction was over, another trailer had overturned in a ditch, and I-95 northbound was closed for a time, and two of its three lanes remained closed until past 9 this morning.

It all began at 2:25 a.m. Kelly Frazier, 20, of Palm Coast, was at the wheel of a 2009 Ford Focus, driving north. She was in the center lane. At one point, around mile marker 283, Frazier found herself directly behind the unknown tractor trailer combination, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. She may have fallen asleep, causing her to crash into the rear of the trailer. That’s the very same way that last Saturday’s wreck began. When she crashed, Frazier’s car was disabled in the highway. Frazier left the car, went to the shoulder, and called 911. But the Ford’s lights were no longer functioning.

Martin Seneosacarlos, 48, of North Miami Beach, was at the wheel of a 2009 International truck. Gregory Wright, 39, of Boynton Beach, was a passenger. Seneosacarlos saw the disabled Ford too late. He swerved left to avoid it at the last moment. Tooo late, The truck struck the car, and the truck then headed for the center guard rail. Seneosacarlos over-corrected, and the truck overturned opn its driver’s side, according to the FHP report, and slid across the northbound lanes all the way into the grassy ditch on the east side of the road.

Both Seneosacarlos and Wright suffered minor injuries and were taken to Florida Hospital Flagler, as was Frazier. The trailer sustained $50,000 in damages. The Ford Focus, $10,000 in damages.

It wasn’t over. Furman Craft, 44, of Miami, was driving another International truck, also a 2009 model. With him was Christopher Deselms, 51, of Lake Worth, Fla. They were driving north. They struck debris on the road, causing disabling damage to the truck’s steering system, some $5,000 worth. Neither truck occupant was injured.

Meanwhile, the truck that had overturned was leaking fuel in the grass, triggering a hazardous material situation and requiring the scene to be secured and treated as such. Crews from the Departm,ent of Environmental Protection were dispatched, and the highway’s center and outside lanes were closed.
