Keep Their Lights On Over the Holidays: Flagler Cares, the social service non-profit celebrating its 10th anniversary, is marking the occasion with a fund-raiser to "Keep the Holiday Lights On" by encouraging people to sponsor one or more struggling household's electric bill for a month over the Christmas season. Each sponsorship amounts to $100 donation, with every cent going toward payment of a local power bill. See the donation page here. Every time another household is sponsored, a light goes on on top of a house at Flagler Cares' fundraising page. The goal of the fun-raiser, which Flagler Cares would happily exceed, is to support at least 100 families (10 households for each of the 10 years that Flagler Cares has been in existence). Flagler Cares will start taking applications for the utility fund later this month. Because of its existing programs, the organization already has procedures in place to vet people for this type of assistance, ensuring that only the needy qualify. |

… and I felt once again, but with unprecedented force, that we die countless times in the course of a life, little deaths that leave us standing there, petrified, surviving, like Robinson Crusoe on the island he didn’t choose, with only our memories to improvise what comes next and no Friday to help us cultivate it.

Jim says
Clarence Thomas is as corrupt as they come. No question.
I spent most of my career working for a company that provided products to the government. As a civilian, my company specifically prohibited all employees from either giving or receiving gifts from our customers or our sub-contractors. I remember three instances over 40 years where an employee was found in violation of that and in all three cases, they were fired and found themselves on the wrong end of a lawsuit. I never thought much about the rule because once it was known, we had to follow it.
Now, a justice on the Supreme Court gets away with having a $278k loan “forgiven” on his high-end RV, gets expensive trips to fancy places for “meetings” and spends time on his “buddies” luxury yachts sailing around foreign countries. All of this is acceptable according the Supreme Court and the Republicans in Congress who would howl like a wolf if this was a liberal member of the court.
The bottom line is that when all this “dark money” was allowed into the political system, the temptation has been too much for [almost] all politicians and, now unfortunately, those in the judicial system.
I hate to say this but I no longer believe that our political system nor our courts have the moral and ethical standards to be trusted anymore. Until we get rid of all this money flowing through the system, it will not get better. And I do not expect it ever to get better.
