If any city should be able to buck that failure, it is Miami. Loved by the mega-rich, it has a strong tax base and an economy dependent on the threatened real estate. A rational state would scramble to save it. Yet the policy response to its inundations is defined by short-termism, vested interests, inadequate resources, a Hobbesian scrum of federal, state, county and city agencies, and denial. Starting with the obvious, the Republicans, who have run Florida since 1999, are an impediment to cutting emissions. The previous governor, Rick Scott, was a climate-change denier. The current one, Ron DeSantis, is better on local environmental problems, yet while recently releasing a sea-level plan he dismissed “things like global warming” as a “pretext to do a bunch of left-wing things”.

So we no longer have cartoons suggesting “Negroes” can’t be smart enough, or women can’t do the job, but seniors? Fair target. Seems like this day and age, old age is something to disparage. On my 69th birthday, I completed, on my own, Daytona’s Zip Line obstacle course. I’m not done yet, either. Our daughter states we are more active than the 40 somethings she knows. How about giving this bigotry the boot?
By the way, isn’t Trump around the same age? About three years difference? Maybe this is just another political ploy cashing in on this current societal approved bigotry.

I voted for Biden and if it comes down to him again (as I hope it doesn’t) against any of those protoplasmic excuses for candidates the other party is putting forward, I’d vote for him again, but let’s not kid ourselves. Biden is not just old. He’s become rudderless, he’s painful to watch and listen to, and he projects the opposite of the sort of energy this country can use in that seat. I wouldn’t want someone of his disposition operating on a heart, operating a forklift or a law seminar. But we should trust someone of his disposition to run the country? It wasn’t bigoted to say that Thurgood Marshall–as revolutionary, brilliant and life-changing as he was for decades–overstayed his years on the Supreme Court when he was barely able to hold a pen in his latter years, it’s not bigoted to to say Biden’s age is an issue. As for trump, the problem there isn’t the unfitness of age. It’s unfitness, period.

As for surgery, in the olden days, many doctors delivered generations of babies, and serve their communities well into their golden years before they finally retired.

I think those of us who voted for Biden were hoping for a sort of replay of Obama, and certainly did not Trump as President. Actually didn’t believe Trump could happen. Still…
