Daniel Buck Douglas, 38, a resident of 6514 Tangerine Avenue in Bunnell, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon early this morning (June 20) after his girlfriend accused him of pointing a rifle at her during an argument.
The woman told police that she Douglas, her boyfriend of a year, were arguing over rent and money. During the argument, she told him that she wanted to end their relationship. The argument continued, moving into the master bedroom they shared, where Douglas allegedly started to “wreck the whole room,” according to the woman–shattering a plate, ripping up papers, flipping a table.
Then, the woman said, Douglas allegedly picked up a rifle that had been next to a dresser near the bed, and allegedly aimed it directly at her, according to Douglas’s arrest report. “If you say another word,” I’m going to shoot you,” he told her, according to her account to police. She called 911.
As Flagler County sheriff’s deputies were at the house, another woman arrived, requested to retrieve Douglas’s cell phone, and told cops that he was at her house on Ash Street in Bunnell. Deputies went to that house. There, Douglas told them that he didn’t know what was going on–that he’d had an argument with girlfriend that morning, but that he couldn’t recall what it was about. He denied aiming a firearm at her or even owning a firearm.
The deputy questioned him about the sleeve the alleged victim had shown him–the sleeve Douglas, she said, had removed from the firearm before pointing it. He said he knew nothing about it. The arrest report does not indicate that a rifle was taken into evidence.
Douglas was booked at the Flagler County jail. His only prior arrest in Flagler was on a probation violation five years ago. He has two prior arrests in Marion County on probation violations. In 2013, according to the Centers for Disease Control, firearms caused 84,258 non-fatal injuries–16,864 of them unintentional. There were 505 fatalities from unintentional gunshots.
