The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced the names of approximately 16,000 Semifinalists in its 65th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Two students from Flagler Palm Coast High School are on that list. They are Elizabeth Wolcott and Liying Wu. On Sept. 22, over 150 volunteers joined AdventHealth Palm Coast to clean-up along Flagler Beach. Medical oncologist Dr. Padmaja Sai brought her daughter Ashana, who in turn encouraged 35 of her friends from high school to join this effort. It's a wonder it stayed standing, or maybe not: the Flagler Beach Pier is more resilient than we know, and Saturday residents came out in force to Cheer at the Pier and celebrate the Flagler Centennial, the first time the pier has been open to so many people since it had to close after being damaged by Hurricane Matthew. Its eastern end is still off limits: it's not even there, and it won't be for a long time yet, but pier repairs are progressing, and the structure should fully functional by the end of May. Last week Hammock residents led by Jan Cullinane organized a demonstration protesting bills in the Florida Senate and House that would essentially nullify Flagler County government's ability to regulate the 100-odd short-term rental properties now operating in the Hammock. The protesters were not pleased with Sen. Travis Hutson who, though he is opposing the bill, has been more low-key about his opposition than a champion of Hammock residents opposed to the bills. Hutson had temporarily floated an amendment to the Senate bill, but withdrew it after protest from the Flagler County Commission, as the amendment would have done little to mitigate the effect of the bill.
