The George Washington Carver Foundation raised more than $10,000 between its traditional annual auction and its new supper club called Motown Madness.
“We are thrilled with the results and want to thank all of our contributors to the auction and dance,” said Flagler County Commission Chair Barbara Revels. “We so appreciate the continued support for this great Community Center that constantly adds value to our county and citizens.”
Motown Madness netted $5,000 and the auction raised about $5,500 for the George Washington Carver Community Center, located at 201 East Drain Street, Bunnell.
The Carver Center is a recreational facility that also offers tutoring, after school study, internet access and also serves the community with GED classes, employment counseling and other services. It supports the Road to Success program, the AIM summer camp and numerous athletic tournaments.
“There was some excitement during the final minutes of the auction with bidders vying for the Hammock Beach Resort stay and golf outing,” Revels said. “The generosity of the resort allowed us to provide both bidders with their choice auction item.”
The surprise of the night at Motown Madness was the dessert auction. Donated cakes brought in more than $1,000.
“The dance band ‘Traces of Gold’ wowed the audience, but we also had four students perform their best songs,” said Cheryl Massaro, director of both the Youth Center at Flagler Palm Coast High School and the Carver Center. “It was wonderful.”
Justice Butler, Flagler Palm Coast High School, kicked off the evening by singing the National Anthem. Eric Dangerfield, Matanzas High School, played with the band.
The following vocalists performed: Ashanna Jones, Flagler Palm Coast High School; Jada Guarino, Buddy Taylor Elementary School; and, Edwina Mezo-Brown, Bunnell Elementary School.
All of the proceeds from these two events benefit the George Washington Carver Foundation, a 501c3 designated to raising money for the Carver Community Center.
“The Foundation just bought new backboards for the basketball hoops in the gym, and purchased new uniforms for a Carver middle school basketball team,” Revels said. “We will be awarding three high school scholarships to Flagler County Seniors.”
Revels is a member of the George Washington Carver Foundation and was part of a team instrumental in bringing the center up to sustainable level, saving the center from an uncertain fate.
