Darius Giddens, Bunnell Son With Troubled Past, Dies After a Fight in Daytona

| May 24, 2011

Darius Giddens, when he was a freshman at FPC in 2006.

Last Updated: May 25, 9:03 a.m.

Darius Giddens, who would have turned 22 in two weeks, died on Monday (May 23), likely as a result of internal injuries he suffered after a fight at the Coliseum, a night club on Beach Street in Daytona Beach.

Giddens, a great nephew of Rev. Frank Giddens and a first cousin to Eddie Johnson, the Bunnell-born soccer star, was well known and, to many, well-liked in Bunnell, where he grew up–and where he was better known as Chilly Bad-Azz–though more recently he was living in a small home on Rose Drive in Palm Coast.

“One of the most saddest days n my life,” Marshwan “Mardy” Gilyard, the Bunnell-born football star, wrote on his Facebook page Monday evening. “I lost one of my best friends RIP chilli damn we need to stop the violence.”

“Goin through it bout my dog,” Gilyard, who was in Bunnell on Saturday, wrote a few hours later.

On June 3rd, Gilyard and Johnson were scheduled to host a “Chilly Bad-Azz Birthday Spectacular” at Daytona Beach’s Aqua Lounge, with a live performance by Blue Steel, the rapper known for “Broke Ho.”

“We were just praying for him this morning, we thought he was all right,” said Daisy Henry, the Bunnell city commissioner, who has a prayer partner with whom she prays every morning at 6.

The fight took place at the Coliseum late Wednesday night. Giddens was at the club with a group of friends from Bunnell. He was reportedly involved in a fight with a Daytona Beach man, and was struck in the head. Police was not involved. (“We have check our records and we did not respond to the coliseum for a fight,” Daytona Beach Police Department spokesman Jimmie Flynt said.) Giddens went home that night, but complained of headaches and dizziness for the next couple of days until he was taken to Halifax Hospital, apparently with a blood clot and signs of a stroke. Matters then deteriorated.

Giddens died at 2 p.m on Monday (May 23), according to a Halifax Hospital spokeswoman.

Dave Byron, spokesman for Volusia County, said the Volusia County Medical Examiner determined that there was no cause for an autopsy–that there was no evidence of trauma.

Giddens has had a troubled few years. He’s been jailed six times at the Flagler County jail since September 2009 on various charges, including robbery, grand theft, battery and drug possession. He was last jailed briefly three weeks ago.

He had just started a Facebook page–at least one under his actual name. He had four friends. His only two pictures showed him with a woman, both of them flipping the finger.

He had another, more authentic Facebook page, his Chilly BadAzz one, where he had 809 friends, and listed himself as part of the Daytona State College class of 2015. There, too, he is fond of posing while flipping the finger, with wads of cash or, on several occasions, with a toddler who appears to be his child. His philosophy: “Ball till Ya Fall..Let’em Have it..Fuck it.” He had a wry sense of humor, too. In one picture, rich in all his usual themes, he brackets his street name between the Bunnell city logo.

Elijah Emanuel, who works at South Bunnell’s Carver Gym and seen the neighborhood’s children grow up, spoke fondly of Giddens on Tuesday. “I never had any problem with him, every time he came to the gym he always kept my attitude and all of that,” Emanuel said. Giddens often frequented the gym, where he played basketball. “So outside of anything else, he was a good kid as far as I’m concerned, and it’s a great loss that we lost him, and it kind of hit me pretty hard last night when I heard about it. It’s going to to take a while to get over this. He had a lot of friends. All I can say is I respected the young man very much, I really did, because of the respect that he gave me.”

News of Giddens’s death had spread at Flagler Palm Coast High School during the day. “I dealt with a lot of students today–very upset, who either knew him or were related to him,” Kevin McCarthy, an assistant principal at the school, said, describing Giddens as “very much loved.” Giddens, he said, had been working at turning his life around, getting his GED and enrolling at Daytona State College.

“Obviously,” McCarthy added, “he was not an angel, but a lot of young people make mistakes but have the opportunity to grow and be a better person. He’ll never get that opportunity.”

Now, perhaps, people will understand why we natives of Bunnell prefer prayer. This is heartbreaking on multiple levels.

  2. just a citizen says:

This individual chose the inevitable path he took….he was a drug dealer…don’t paint him as some outstanding civic minded individual. Take a look at his face book and read his comments and look at his pictures. I don’t wish anyone harm….but please call it like it is.

  3. New to PC says:

Maybe if this “Bunnell son” wasn’t out playing wanna be gangster he wouldn’t be in this situation. This guy is nothing close to a nice guy, he was a career criminal. He’s 21 and the news story states “He’s been jailed six times at the Flagler County jail since September 2009 on various charges, including robbery, grand theft, battery and drug possession. He was last jailed briefly three weeks ago”. And those are only the crimes the police caught him committing, who knows what other crimes this upstanding citizen never got caught committing. And where were all his “Homies” at while he was getting beat up? Probably running away like the cowards they are. Lesson to all you other Bunnell and Palm Coast “thugs”, YOU REAP WHAT YOU SOW!!!!

    • citizen of palm coast says:

you are very right, if he was trying to get his life back on track then he wouldnt be dead. I wish the very best on him. Ive have known this young man for a while. He is very respectful to others but he is a young man that was confused and didnt have nobody out there to stand behind him in school. The news letter read that he was a freshman at FPC in 2006. He alo dropped out. He was introduced to drugs and Gangs. All these little gangs out here in plam coast, is nothing. I have grown up with GANGS. All these little kids running around here saying they are in gangs and wanna be thugs you need to stop and look. Where all yo homies gonna be at when someboy bout to pull the trigger or when you bout to get busted. You going to be in jail alone anit noboy gonna ome and visit you or nothing. But the lords knows where “CHILLY” went. If the lord saw he was getting his life on track he went on ”HOME”

  4. some guy says:

I dont get this piece are we to feel bad that one less thug lives in Flagler??

  5. The Truth says:

How about posting a mugshot next time, more apropos. If by troubled “past” you mean 3 weeks ago then you are right in that description. Five arrests in the last year with four of them this year alone.

  7. Too bad says:

I hope Mr. Gilyard would learn his lesson. This scene has played out so many times in the NFL. They can’t leave the hood behind. “Mardy” has had chance after chance. The Rams drafted WR in the 2nd and 3rd rounds this year. NFL teams won’t think twice about cutting troubled, 4th round, 4th WRs on the team.

  8. Ometries says:

What intelligent person would dare post something like that. I am a mother first of all and would not want any one to have to bury their child. You said a mouth full you do reap what you sow his mother’s turn today could very well be yours tomorrow. Lets really be honest here 6 arrests and still the streets says one thing and one thing only either he is innocent or the BUNNELL POLICE DEPARTMENT is a freakin joke. With 809 facebook friends and the entire southside standing by him until the end tells the WORLD what type a guy he was just hope you will be MISSED half as much. f… what u heard.

  9. Empathetic Lady says:

    My condolences to the family.
Even a man with a trouble pass will be missed by the loved ones left behind. It’s sad when any life is lost to violence; but even sadder when the signs of a concussion was missed.

  10. TT says:

Darius will truely be missed I didn’t know him as much as everyone else but I can say when him and my friend was dating that he kept a smile on her face he always kept her talking about him and also my cousins was very close with him they always wanted to be around him and enjoyed his presence he was a fun and full of life type of person and I can say he will truely be missed bunp what any negative person has to say.

I’ve seen the difference as to the response to stories such as this. Even the hardest of criminals can find their way past life’s difficult moments. The youth are impressionable and can take a longer time to realize their follies. Even Malcolm X saw through these phases. Lighten up folks. This story is for your information. We need to know. Thank you FlaglerLive for giving us a bigger picture as to who this child of our community is.
P.s. My condolences to the family.

HE WAS A DRUG DEALER AND WAS DISRESPECTFUL TO HIS ELDERS.. EVERYBODY WANNA SHOW LOVE FOR HIM NOW BUT WHERE WAS EVERYBODY WHEN HE WAS OUT THERE DOING WRONG NOBODY TOLD HIM TO SLOW DOWN AND GET HIS LIFE TOGETHER. MY PRAYERS ARE WITH HIS FAMILY BUT WE NEED TO LOOK AT THE BIG PICTURE.. WE NEED TO GET THESE KIDS OFF OF THESE STREETS AND SHOW THEM SOME LOVE IF THEY AINT GETTING IT AT HOME ALL THESE KIDS POPPN PILLS AND DOING DRUGS AINT GONE GET THEM NOWHERE BUT TO AN EARLY GRAVE.. YALL GOTTA REMEMBER DEATH IS NOT JUST FOR THE ELDERLY.. WE GOT WAKE UP PEOPLE.. PRAYER CHANGES EVERYTHING..

  25. Tasha says:

  26. HonestWorkingFather says:

Live by the sword, Die by the sword….im reading people say, everyone makes mistake at a young age, but not everyone is constantly being arrested for their hoodlum ways…he was an adult, a young adult, but still an adult..and paid for his actions, maybe not his actions that night, but even tho he was a nice guy, he did very bad things to others. Where was all these people sticking up for him now, when he was actin like a wanna be thug? where were the people/family that should have been guiding him and molding him??? you wanna know where they were? they were right there with him, committing crimes like him…..im sad for his parents, but at least my tax dollars wont have to go to paying for his life behind bars, cus that where many,…almost all hoodlums in bunnell end up.

  27. just a citizen says:

    Where to start…………
“Only the good die young”…. Oh you mean like Jeffery Dahmer, Timothy McVeigh, Ted Bundy…etc
Chilly was recruited as a soldier alright, but it wasn’t God doing the recruiting. The intelligence level of most of the posters here is just a reflection of their outstanding grammar, anyone that has to use the word fu** three times in each sentence…must be a scholar. Maybe if half of you spent more time in school rather than learning street crimes..you could actually construct a sentence. Stop making this a race issue…Chilly was a criminal…plain and simple he chose the path he was on..opportunity is available to people of all colors…. it’s what you do with those opportunities…He chose the easy way…and now he’s dead. The worst of the worst criminals are popular…you justify his character by how many friends he had on facebook …then Charlie Manson must be a fine upstanding individual.
Let’s build a statue to Chilly…. He’s a great role model for the younger kids…let’s glorify the criminal..so we can keep producing more.. so we can fill more of the jails and morgues with our young men.
You all want to blame everything but the man himself……

FYI everyone… My condolences go out to the family of this boy. But, just so everyone understands, he was a big time drug dealer, known gang member and trouble maker. He recruited middle schoolers into his gang every single day. He sold drugs to children… your children. All the cash that he flashes in those pictures… where do you think he got it from? His 9-5 at the factory?? Nope… from selling drugs to the community, from robbing people and from stealing. The car that is shown in these pictures… nice huh? Ive heard from my own sources that this car is what is know as a “Crack rental.” He sold crack cocaine to a person with an addiction… then when that person’s finances couldn’t support his habit, he offered this drug dealer his parents car while they were on vacation. He flaunts this BMW like he was proud of it. How can you be proud of something like that? He was basically driving a stolen vehicle around all day long pretending like he’s “The baddest dude on the block.” It’s ridiculous  Yes, he was young and yes youngsters make mistakes. Maybe he was a product of his environment. Maybe he watched too many movies. None of that changes the fact that people are responsible for their actions. He made choices on a daily basis. Choices that negatively affected hundreds of people. It’s always sad to see someone die at such a young age. But with the lifestyle that this kid chose, what did any of you expect for him and his future? I’ve heard it so many times, in movies and pop culture in general… “He’s only got two place to go… prison or to the morgue.” Thats the choices that he made. Unfortunately, the result was the latter and not the former. It’s a shame when you see other youngsters idolize this kind of behavior. Kids see his pictures and see how jovial he was and think that a life of crime will pay off. News flash people… it doesn’t. It never does. At some point, the police will catch up to you, and you will have to pay for your indiscretions. I know that no one ever, ever, ever learned anything good from this kid in life… I’m just hoping that some people learn something from his untimely death.
Sn: I do agree that this “Fight” at the colusieum should be investigated by the authorities. The problem is, when the cops go to talk to this guy’s friends, they are all going to say “Oh, I didn’t see nothing.” There is little doubt in my mind that this kids actions led to the fight that was ultimately his demise. He lived the “Thug” mentality. What else did you expect to happen to him? He was a skinny little guy with a larger than life personality… and a mouth to match. You had to figure that someday, something like this would happen. It’s a shame… Now the other young man, that was probably just defending himself and happened to whoop this little guy’s butt, will probably be murdered by the very same people that did nothing to show Mr. Giddens the right way to live and the proper way to carry yourself as a man. Smh… someone needs to stop this cycle. Someone needs to step up to these kids and show then how to be humans an not animals. Someone needs to STOP defending these actions and start holding these kids accoutable. Certain people need to stop pretending that these are good kids because they “Respect” them. Someone needs to do SOMETHING before we start seeing this same article once a week.
My prayers go out to this boy’s family. I hope you can cope with your lose and take something positive out of his life here on earth.

  31. New to PC says:

Here come all the ignorant comments about race. You people were never oppressed or forced to work a day in your lives. Don’t hide behind the hard times that your ancestors had to go through over 100 years ago. You need to come into present times and realize racism only still exist because you people use it as a crutch to get through your lives. This criminal is being praised for accomplishing nothing in his life but being in and out of the judicial system. Your children are seeing this and wanting to grow up and do the same thing because mom and dad say it’s ok. The facts are that this adult made an adult decision and he paid the ultimate price. It wasn’t because of his color, sex or religion. He was a thug and tried to live a thug life. I feel bad for his parents but maybe they should have helped this young man while he still had a chance. If someone steered him away from this lifestyle then we all wouldn’t be writing these comments today. The same goes for all you cousin’s and homies that are posting your comments and putting the blame on everyone else, where were you? Why weren’t you helping him? Why didn’t any of you get him to the hospital right after he was struck in the head? If he wasn’t doing anything wrong why wasn’t the Daytona Police called to the club? Before you respond, Hooked on phonics may be a good investment for most of you commenter’s from Bunnell because you’re really starting to show your intelligence level. Instead of attempting to be cool and replacing all of the letter E’s with the Number 3 why don’t you try to make a complete sentence or spell a few words correctly. Once again “you reap what you sow”

As His Aunt, No One Knows What My Sister Is Going Through; But God Is The Only Judge. Monday Was A Grieving Day For All Of His Family & Friends, Can You Give Some Respect? You Don’t Want To Have To Go Through What Happened With Your Child Because You May Not Know How To Handle It. If All Of Us Were Perfect, Then No One Would Have Any Problems. So To Those Of You Who Goes Through The Paper & The Media, You Have No Idea What Kind Of Person He Was . You Don’t Judge A Book By Its Cover, He Was The Sweetest & Respected Person, So Don’t Just Look At Him, Look At The BUNNELL POLICE DEPARTMENT Too ! You Will NEVER Understand Until You Go Through What His Mother, Father, & The Rest Of His Family & Friends Are Going Through Until You’ve Walked In Our Shoes.
Rest In Peace Nephew . Love Your Aunt .

    • Reality Check says:

With all due respect, your nephew \STOLE from other people. He took things from others without their consent. Thou shall not steal is a basic tenant to living life as a civilized human being. I’m not going to stand in judgement of his parents, and I will pray for them that they should find peace as they grieve, which when you lose a child, is forever. But I will not accept that someone is sweet or respectable – let’s forget whatever else is on his record – robs/steals possessions from others. That is a basic, fundamental wrong and when you become of an age, especially his grown age, doing so is not “sweet” or “respected”. Don’t blame the police department. The truth is that when you live a certain lifestyle, and conduct your business in a certain way, it will be your detriment. No one is judging a book by its cover – the criminality and violence within this community needs to stop or else folks will be losing their children again and again and again. I say this as a person who has walked through your shoes and lost someone through their own choices they made in life and continued to make and it hurts very deeply, but I won’t sugar coat it or try to deflect blame. After six tries in a system that failed your nephew essentially….put back on the streets with no productive future and him letting that be an excuse to continue leading himself down a bad path…don’t blame anyone else and this idea of the amount of incarcerations being a badge of honor, something to prove how hard and manly someone is, needs to stop. He was a grown man, responsible for his own actions and consequences. Some folks who had met up with that kind of trouble in the past would keep themselves OUT of the clubs. He made his own choices on where to be, what to do and all that. People need to take responsibility for themselves in this life, and their families need to stand up and recognize that until they get real and speak out in their communities as this type of life being unacceptable and hurtful to everyone in that community, they are going to experience more and more heartache.

Again i say if he was such a criminal the entire BUNNELL POLICE DEPARTMENT needs to be fired. Thats who all the concern citizens are paying. They had him SIX times and let him go ask yourself WHY? Just perhaps he was innocent.

  37. SAW says:

Sadness for the family yes, sad also is the fact that far too many young people appear to think of him as someone special, someone to look up to. This guy was a criminal that averaged two arrests a year for the past three years, arrests for things he got caught doing, just imagine how many other offenses he was involved in for which he was never caught. Something seriously wrong with the mindset of young kids who think he was great guy.

SO WHOEVER IS POSTING RESPONSE ONLY BY WHAT THE PAPER TELLS I BEG YOU PLEASE STOP IT. FLAGLER LIVE WILL HAVE YOUR HEAD TOTALLY MESSED UP. IF THIS WAS A YOUNG MAN YOU ACTUALLY NEVER MET THEN KEEP ALL COMMENTS TO YOURSELF. THE HOOD HAVE OUR OWN DEFINITION AS A HERO AND CHILLY WAS DEFINATELY ONE. REST IN PEACE CUZ I LOVE U BUT GOD LOVES YOU BEST…..

  40. Outsider says:

I certainly give my condolences to the family of this man; I don’t know what it’s like to go through this and pray I never will. My opinion has certainly been covered through all the comments here, so I won’t bother repeating ideas. The fact is, this man is gone and nothing will change it. What CAN be changed is what happens next. You can either continue the status quo or you can use this event as an example of how not to live your life. The next time you see someone dealing on the street corner selling drugs, are you gonna look the other way again, or call the police? Are you gonna look at the buyer as just another druggie, or someone’s child who YOU can save? Are you gonna save that person’s parents the grief and be proactive in turning him around, or are you just going to look the other way? You see, there is a teachable moment here where you can alter the future, save a life, or just become another co-conspirator in the decline of our city. There is noone else to blame.

  41. Haw Creek Girl says:

This is not a black or white issue. A young man, no matter what your opinion of him is……lost his life. This is not about his choices, etc. This is an article that should as I said in my previous post, grieve us all on multiple levels. RIP son and I pray for blessing and healing for your loved ones.

  42. Ex Citizen/Wife of Bunnell says:

Listen all of you who have had the perfect children, perfect life and never seen a child go through growing pains. It’s people like u who say all these negative things about children, make some of them do what they do, but it’s their community and teachers who see the good in these children that you call “thugs”. I lived there, people like you do everything you can to keep those children down. YOU give them these titles, “THUGS”, ‘NIGGAS”, “GANGSTAS”, ETC.., But guess what, they have a community family that sticks closer than any brother. They believe in their children. How many NFL players or Pro Soccer player has come out of your family, community or home, let me answer that NONE. You better watch what u say, and know that we have to “reap what we say, as well as what we do”. Bunnell, continue to support each other, stand strong, fight with all your might, build each other up, prove people wrong daily and continue to love each other……..MAKE A STAND!!!!

This is so sad this really shows how racism and ignorance is still alive in 2011 this young man died and people are talking about some one son who died For god sakes!!! . These people are obviously hurting who are you guys to judge this young man. Everyone has faults I’m sure if we looked up some of you guys background it woudnt look so pretty. People are hurting just because its 2011 does not mean that blacks are not facing the same issues from the 60’s. Instead wastein your iggnorant and malicious. Comments on this youngman who obivously impacted people lives. Do somthing postive and meaningful and help the world become a better place you idiots! Stop being a wondering generality and be a meaningful pacific. But hey some of you guys are stuck in your redneck ways and that’s okay cause you guys are iggnorant cause you just don’t know s.m.h (shakeing . My. Head). Lord forgive them for there sins for they no not of what they do.

  44. Kedrick Emanuel says:

My name is Kedrick Emanuel currently located in the Atlanta, Ga area, and I grew up in the city of Bunnell, Florida were most of my friends and family still reside and my father as well works within the area. I knew Darius personally and although he might not be as perfect as people who did not know may seem, he was a great friend and respectful person. All the negative comments that Im seeing is unnecessary. Judging someones lifestyle or route does not make the person or his heart, instead we need to help them instead of judging. Everybody makes mistakes and everybody not perfect including myself, but this is why we live to learn from life. Everybody that loved this kid knew him or came in contact with him, including myself. Instead of judging why dont you help and learn the person before you make childish comments.

  45. Sexxxiblk says:

@ PC the fact the you refer to a race as “You people” proves that racism still exists and think to yourself if this was a white child would you still feel the same way. Maybe your reading something I’m not because no one is praising him for his down falls. No matter what you think HE IS STILL TRULY MISSED AND LOVED! @ Anonymous, you seem to be well informed huh? As long as there are Drug Addicts there will Be Drug Dealers! Start at the root of the problems, Drug Dealers don’t give testers! So while you would like to blame the world for YOUR habit, friend or family get the help you or they need first. Unless your going to get rid of the Government this problem will always exist! If you have not noticed there are new Drug Dealers on the streets now DOCTORS, that are now destroying your (WHITE) community so you can no longer blame the ANIMALS as you put it. R.I.P Chilly and may God give your family strength!

  47. Outsider says:

Ex-citizen, are you kidding? I did my best to keep my kids from hearing the “n-word”. You know where she heard it first? At the Wendy’s in Palm Coast, where one black kid called another black kid “my n-you know-what”. Have you listened to rap music, where every other word is the n word, bitch, ho, f&$), and the like?Don’t even dare blame that on me! What do you think, MLK did what he did just so he could have a street named after himself in every ghetto across America?! He did it so EVERYONE would look at each other not as a person of a particular skin color, but of a particular CHARACTER! I bbelieve he would be rolling over in his grave if he could see what some folks in the black community call each other. I really don’t believe he would be all too excited with the typical rap record where the n word is thrown around lime candy at Halloween. Noone’s had this so-called perfect life; what matters is how you deal with adversity. If Oprah can go from the poorest of communities to the richest woman in America, then anyone can certainly live life where they support themselves and enjoy a life of comfort and create a family of productive citizens. I know many black people who have done just that, because they flatly rejected the lifestyle that many on here are trying to defend.

To all of you who is judging him because of race, criminal history or where hes from is messed up. If you didnt know this boy how can you judge him. Yes he went to jail a few times but im sure someone in your family has been too. Let the boy rest in peace & stop posting stupid comments & have some compassion for his family in this rough time. Let them grief for their loved one! I knew of him from high school & he seemed like a good person, & i never judged him because i didnt know him all that well. If any of you in this situation i know you wouldnt appreciate these comments.
To the family of Darius, I hope you get through this, My thoughts & prayers are with you. R.I.P Darius.

HOW ABOUT TRYING TO FIND THE PERSON WHO DID THIS TO HIM ! HE MIGHT HAVE DONE THINGS WRONG BUT WHO HASN’T ? WHO ARE WE TO JUDGE ? EVERYONE WANTS TO SAY HE WAS A TROUBLE MAKER BUT HE WAS ALSO A FATHER , A BROTHER AND A SON ! THE MAIN PROBLEM HERE IS THAT THERE IS NOTHING FOR THE YOUTH IN OUR COUNTY TO DO ! WE NEED TO BE FOCUSED ON HOW TO TURN THIS TRAGEDY INTO SOMETHING OTHER KIDS CAN LEARN FROM ! AND FOCUS ON GETTING ACTIVITIES FOR OUR YOUTH INSTEAD OF TEARING THEM DOWN .

So in the end what we all really need here in Flagler County are better prosecutors.

  54. NortonSmitty says:

It is pretty curious that the man was arrested six times, but there has been no mention of a conviction. Interesting. If he was dealing, he did it by outsmarting the Bunnell PD.

Seems like he was the charming outlaw type. We all love the ones who can pull it off. The posts here prove that. Too bad he didn’t live long enough to pass through the Thug Life. A smart personable kid might have gone on to better things. Malcolm did. So did 50 Cent in his own way. But for every one who survives this crucible alive or un-incarcerated there are 1000 kids like Darius or in prison. It’s called thinning the herd, and the life he chose is a very, very tough herd to run with.

No matter where he is now, he is definitely in a better place. Out of South Bunnell and away from the pressures to climb out of that hell hole with a boot on your throat. R.I.P

My sincere condolences to the family.

Another victim of our ineffecient ”too big to fail governemnt” that continues to fail us more and more each day.

I’m reading the comments here and on one side I see the love, hurt, and anger pouring out from those who knew the real Darius, and on the other side I see the disgust, contempt, and gloating from those eager in their rejoicing and judgement.

A kid born into a hard life, a victim of his environment, surviving the only way he knew best because the system failed him. But who cares. He was a thief, a drug dealer, and up to no good. Add poor, black, and not one of us, and that sealed his character. But the rejoicers are also products of their environment, let us also remember that.

To those who love and knew Darius Giddens, my sincere condolences to you all. May he finally rest in peace, and may you find the strength and courage as you continue through your daily life.

The person that I’m reading about in these BS articles is not the person that I knew and his criminal history didnt have a damn thing to do with what happened at that club that night. Why is that even being brought up. These damn writers trying to sell newspapers always gotta dig for negative BS! This individual, DARIUS GIDDENS was different. You will never know. Darius I love you, I am praying. I miss the times God placed us together, sharing our souls. I love you BabyBoy. 66. Kurt says:

i dont want this to be negative. it should be looked at as an opportunity for others to look at what happened to this guy and learn a lesson. maybe thats why he was put on earth was to teach young bunnell kids that no mattre how flashy u are the gang life never leads to anything good. dont make his death be in vain young kids go to school and do something wit your life.my condolences to his family.maybe he wasnt a bad guy but he did a lot of bad things. look what the chief of daytona said about his gang life in the volusia news journal.

No autopsy was performed, according to Daytona Beach Police Chief Mike Chitwood, who said his department wasn’t notified of any fight at the Coliseum nightclub in Daytona Beach on May 18 in which Giddens is said to have been involved.

“The doctor at the hospital said he died of a stroke, so the medical examiner isn’t going to do an autopsy,” Chitwood said Tuesday. Chitwood added Giddens was “a known Florida-certified gang member.”

Giddens went to the hospital three days after the fight was supposed to have occurred, Chitwood said.

“He told fellow gang members and his family that he had been having headaches for a while,” Chitwood said. “That’s why the doctor ruled it (his death) a stroke.”

Chitwood shared an old Facebook page photo of Giddens, whose current page has been changed, in which Giddens is shown holding an automatic weapon in front of a backdrop of money and Louis Vuitton logos.

Chitwood said Giddens belonged to the hybrid gang Black Flag.

Giddens was arrested six times in Flagler County, four times since the beginning of the year, and twice in Volusia County, jail and court records show. The bulk of those arrests was for drug offenses but Giddens also has been charged with burglary, robbery, battery and shooting or throwing a deadly missile.

  67. Redeemed says:

My condolences to the family involved. I notice that there are plenty of bible scriptures being thrown around here in order to justify either defense or retaliation. There is only one Judge, and man cannot judge man, but that task is left to God alone. In that there certainly is truth. What everyone fails to think about is how are we judged? If we have a good heart are we welcomed into Heaven? How about our deeds? If we feed the poor and hungry will we find favor in the eyes of God? The fact is, if you believe the bible is the word of God, no good deed is going to get us into Heaven. Its by Gods grace, belief and confession in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior that we are welcomed in to the Kingdom of Heaven. With that salvation, what Jesus refered to as “being born again” there is eternal salvation. Along with that, there has to be a repentance of sin. Repentance means to turn from, not just ask forgiveness of. If your living in willfull sin, that is knowing, having a conviction that something is wrong, and doing it anyway (drunkard, fornicator, murder, lying ect) then you are playing with fire. In the bible, Jesus in the book of Revelation says that He will “vomit” the “lukewarm” our of His mouth. There is no once saved always saved or extreme Calvinism mentioned anywhere in the scripture. Now, I know my God and He is rich in mercy and grace. My prayer is that this young man got his heart right with Jesus before his hour was up, for God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son that NONE would perish but all would have everlasting life and no where is this more evident then at the cross where the criminal next to Jesus repented in the final hour and was with Jesus that same hour. However; let us not glorify this young mans life style, but rather learn from it. People like Daisy Henry and Elijah Emmanuel should use this opportunity to preach a message of hope but also that sin leads to death separation from God. People need God’s comforting and to know that they don’t have to face eternal separation from God. And while it is true that Jesus told the religious people of His day “he that is without sin let him cast the first stone” and they all left, he also told the woman she was forgiven, and to sin no more. No man knows the day or the hour that He will come for us, for you, for me. That is why it is so important to get your heart right with Jesus Christ. If your reading this, and you want this salvation, to know that you know that you’ll be in Heaven with Jesus just pray this simple prayer in your own words. The Bible says believe in your hear and confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus:

Father forgive me, I know that I’m a sinner, but I believe that you died for me, and that the blood you shed at the cross takes away my sin. I believe that you died and were resurrected on the third day and by your grace and love I ask you to come into my heart and be my Lord and Savior. Make yourself real to me- In the name of Jesus Christ

    God bless all

Flaglerlive.com is a news source that gives information just like the newspapers and TV news. Unfortunately the news information may not be pleasant. But without this information most of you would not be able to give everyone who reads this your testimony as to who Darius was. Losing a loved one is really tough. Especially when they are so young. I have had this happen to me many times. I know the hurt. Though I didn’t know Darius. I know lots of young men like him. Good heart but followed the wrong crowd or made bad choices. Many I know worked it out and are doing great things. For those who may not know me I’m Black from the same kind of community as S.Bunnell but a bigger city. My very best friend (18yrs old) was shot to death from mistaken Identity. Shooter thought he was his older brother who incidentally sold drugs. Young white men died with similar situations except it was Alcohol instead of crack or marijuana. During that time black kids were killed because they looked at white girls. My wife’s brother was shot and killed at a party. My cousin was shot and killed by the police in commission of a robbery. I can name at least ten childhood friend that was killed. It hurts! We can learn from this. I have and I try to help the youth see clearer the choices and options in their lives. Flaglerlive has been one of the best allies in this task. They were upfront with the story and help carry the information to saving Carver Gym. Reverend Giddens was featured in a couple of articles. There are many young Darius’s around so make this heartbreak count by providing guidance. Eddie and Marshwon are doing their part. The most unfortunate thing is that we have all these comments from people with no heart. Put yourselves in the place of the family. Darius died from injuries from a fight. Apprehend the person responsible. Lose the racist attitude and try to understand that life isn’t easy for some. There is always salvation for all.

just a citizen says:“He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it. He who accepts evil without protesting against it is really cooperating with it”
I know this concept very well. In fact the oppression and enslavement of Africans in America is a direct result of this concept. When the Professor at Colorado spoke of this concept and compared the victims of 911 to being complicit with the American Capitalistic crimes against the world and to the Palestinians etc. He compared them to Adolf Eichmann who went on with his life as though nothing is wrong with the the Jews in the gas chambers. He was vilified and lost his tenure. Lets be honest. When unfair incarceration practices exists, when drugs such as alcohol and cigarettes can be sold but marijuana causes incarceration of thousands of young black men, when Politicians are paid off by Corporations, when universal health care is denied to all as a right, when education and activities for the youth in need are cut to a bear minimum, when nobody goes to jail for the bank fraud the collapsed the world economy much more the U.S. economy, when we are lied to for a war to take place costing thousand of civilian lives and none of the perpetrators are jailed we should ask ourselves why we are letting these things happen. Get over your holier than thou attitude and be true to the ideal that we are all in this life together.

  78. just a citizen says:

W.Ryan…I guess you can twist the meaning to whatever you deem necessary to make your point that it’s ok sell marijuana, because cigarettes and alcohol are legal….the operative word is legal, regardless of yours or anyone else’s philosophical reasons as to what should or should not be legal. The fact is if marijuana was legal he would be selling cocaine because there is no money in selling something you can by in a store. Again color is being brought into this…it isn’t about color it’s about what is right..selling anything that is illegal…is just a fast easy way to make money….instead of actually working for it. Get off your soapbox and let’s talk truth…If Mr. Giddens was a contributor to society rather than a predator…then he most likely would be alive and well, I’m sure his lifestyle put him in the position he was in on that fateful night in Daytona.. nothing more nothing less. In no way am I condoning what happen to him, it is a great loss anytime someone’s life ends abruptly. Instead of protesting his lifestyle people here are trying make excuses and condone it. So all of you are “accepting and cooperating” with a lifestyle of illegal activity and fast money..all you are doing is perpetuating this behavior.. so in turn the children who are listening have already gained your approval…look among those for the next Darius Giddens.
So everyone here isn’t confused with W.Ryan’s smoke screen, so he could rant and rave about the social state of the country, the actual author of that quote was Dr. Martin Luther King…he meant it to encompass all things and all people.

My prayers go out to this family for strength in their time of grief. It is never easy losing a love one no matter what the situation is or the life they have lived because no matter what it is still their family and I wish this on no one, but yet it is still something we have to go through because we are all born to die. He has made many mistakes in his life but at least he was heading in the right direction and trying to get on the right path and he was taking the necessary steps to get there unfortunately no one knows the minute nor the hour when your life will end. I just pray that he asked for forgiveness and accepted Jesus as his saviour before his last breath. Reading a lot of these post really breaks my heart instead of focusing on the negative things he did They should have been noting the positive direction he was taking with his life and getting into a fight at the club could happen to anyone it could have been you. We do not know what happened or if he even started it. I’m just thankful I have a forgiving GOD and none of you will be judging me when the time comes and remember only God can judge us. What are things you have done or do that no one knows about trust God knows and soon you will be judged too!!!!

My prayers go out to his family for strength in you’ll time of grief and the strength to deal with all this negativity I know it is the last thing you’ll need to hear about your family in a time like this stay strong and let go and let God he will take care of it. PEOPLE PLEASE THE BUNNELL POLICE DIDNT HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH HIS DEATH.. HE WAS ARRESTED BECAUSE HE WAS BREAKING THE LAW. HAS HE EVER HAD A JOB WITH A PAYCHECK?? CAN HIS CHILD GET SOCIAL SECURITY?? IF NOT THEN TELL ME HOW HE WAS MAKING HIS MONEY.. HE COULDVE AVOIDED THAT FIGHT AND WALKED AWAY..I SOUND LIKE A BROKEN RECORD HE WAS A DRUG DEALER AND DISRESPECTFUL TO HIS ELDERS.. I AM A BLACK WOMAN FROM THE SOUTH SIDE OF BUNNELL AND I SAW WHAT HE WAS DOING.. THIS MAN WAS NOT A ROLE MODEL.. HE WANTED THE FAST MONEY AND THE FAST LIFE.. THESE KIDS ARE LOOKING UP TO THESE MEN WHO HANG ON THE CORNER WHY??? WE REALLY NEED TO WAKE UP.. IN A MONTH NO ONE WILL BE TALKING ABOUT HIM IN BUNNELL CAUSE IT WILL BE SOMETHING ELSE GOING ON.. THE ONES WHO ARE MAD ABOUT THESE COMMENTS ARE THE ONES WHO WANT ATTENTION.. I KNEW HIM SO SHOULD I GET SOME ATTENTION TOO?? WE ALL GOTTA GO WHEN GOD CALLS US HOME AND IT WAS HIS TIME.. BUT WE NEED TO STOP POINTING FINGERS.. ITS NOT ABOUT RACE, THE POLICE, OR HOW HE LIVED HIS LIFE.. GOD WANTED HIM SO IT WAS HIS TIME TO GO.. BUT I KNOW WHEN ITS MY TIME I PRAY THAT I AM SAVED.. WAKE UP PEOPLE.. IM PRAYING FOR FLAGLER COUNTY AS A WHOLE CAUSE WE NEED IT.. AMEN!!!!

  87. w.ryan says:

I’m real about what I stated…In fact this quote came during the Montgomery Bus Boycott. You know the one. Rosa Parks! Your use of it was merely a matter of convenience and totally unfit because of your lack of understanding of this quote. I hope you know that segregation was a law as well. It seems that convenience is another meaning for law these days. Being that you’re in Flagler County you must also know that school desegregation ended in the this county in1978 while elsewhere schools had been desegregated sooner. There is no smoke screen here. A form of segregation still exists here and you may be passively a part of it. What’s the median income in S.bunnell? What’s the arrest ratio between the races? What are the percentage of school suspension and expulsions compare racially and percentage wise? I think its your rose tinted glasses that’s smoked. If it quacks like a duck, etc…its a duck! I am not condoning the use of drugs. It’s been done already by the FDA and the politicians that have been paid off to be in Corporate pockets. I hate the hate this article is getting from a racial standpoint. I ask that you and all of the other haters remove their rose tints from your glasses and be real about what is really happening. Be sensitive about the needless loss of a life regardless of color and social status. Once again my condolences to the Giddens family.

ya’ll ppl tlking bout him & ya’ll dont even know him like that . . it’s plenty of ppl out here doing wrong .. he’s gone and ya’ll tlking sooo much shit bout him smh. get up off em’. R.i.P Darius realest i ever met !

  89. Larry says:

This man was a product of his environment. We have a choice, we can improve the conditions and lives of the kids in these neighborhoods or we can allow them to grow up to be jobless thugs who eventually find themselves in jail or dead. Instead of squandering another $25,000 for video cameras to keep an eye on the south side, use that money to help fund redevelopment of that area and provide housing with more respectable living conditions. Build a community that provides eyes on the street and offers jobs and other opportunities for the youth. Bunnell’s waste of $25000 of tax payer money for high tech cameras is not going to improve living conditions, it will just help the cops build the rap sheet for each unfortunate soul being raised in that community.

  90. Sisco Deen says:

    Hey w.ryan

I know folks get information from somewhere; they just don’t “pull it out of the air,” however, according to my research (Flagler Tribunes, Bunnell High School annuals, interviews for my web site) Flagler County’s desegregation of our schools began in 1966 with the “choice of school” plan with the schools first being fully integrated in Sep 1967 not 1978.

My condolences to the family as well.

  91. w.ryan says:

Sisco Deen says… I stand corrected with the date on desegregation. I will also state that race relations was as if segregation was still in place in ’78. I’ve heard from the people that has lived in Flagler all of their lives how it was. Blacks couldn’t cross to the other side of the rail road tracks after a certain time for fear of violence according to many sources. Am I right that the “black high school” George Washington Carver closed it’s doors when FPC opened in ’78? Jim Crow was still in effect as far I understand my sources. Regardless of our history I see the future bright as long as we understand our past knowing that we are best served respecting ourselves and others. Larry…good post! Thanks Sisco Deen,

  94. Concern Citizen says:

Attention SMH….yes it is true it was his time to go however if you live in bunnell then you should know what really is going on there. So you want them not to put the Bunnell police dept. in it, they chose to be in it when they gave that bs statement. When, if they were doing there job why in the hell wasn’t this so called criminal locked up. They arrested him six times and they wouldn’t or couldn’t convict him of anything come on be serious. What was the reason for them letting him out? If you really are a black woman of bunnell and trust i do not condone the bad decisions that this young man has made but give those kids of bunnell a chance. You see aswell as i do they have nothing for those children there, hell they gotta fight to keep the recreation center open. If you really care whats going on then help sense you have all your ducks in a row. You said you see all the young men hanging on the corner tell me where else can they go? If atttention is what you are seeking be a positive part of your community then maybe you will get your 15 minutes of fame. I hope you don’t have your own GOD because there is only one and you say you are praying if it is the true and living GOD you would know that he says “those without sin cast, the first stone’. When we see our community falling don’t talk about them reach out and lend a helping hand. That would be the CHRISTIAN way sense you are trying to become saved theres a start for you.

  95. Special says:

I knew him from middle school and the only thing I can remember is him making me laugh. Even though I have not seen him in years this hit me so hard. I was bathing my son and all I could think of is, what if in 20 years something like this happened to my son. Even if your back round is squeaky clean you could still get into a fight. I don’t even wanna imagine where his mother is in her head. Your children, no matter how old they get, will always be your babies. Her baby is gone… and this teaches me that I need to be closer to ppl because this could happen to anyone. This teaches me to teach my son to never take life for granted. Make your decisions well and as my father tells me, have no regrets. Darius is the same age as I am. This brings a very chilling feeling to me. This is why I would rather stay home with my son and husband because when people get drunk they act stupid and want to fight. But none of that matters now. I feel so horrible for his mother. No one should have to bury their child. No matter what he did beforehand, no all that matters is grieving. I know all about the racism that still exist. My husband is white my son is mixed and I’m black. All kinds of ppl shoot us dirty looks and say horrible things. But that’s ok. I love them both and I see no color. We all will be judged for our actions. No one is an exception. So watch what you say about someone’s son. Everything he was does not come higher than carrying him for 40weeks. I don’t know him as chilly I know him as Darius Giddens. RIP. life is short. So why don’t you find something else better to do with your lives. Making his mothers grieving worse. I hope she never looks because this is tearing me up. Imagine her?

  96. NortonSmitty says:

Here’s something said by one of the greatest of my days. A little late for Darius, but it’s about watching what you teach the shorty’s. Maybe Chilly and Gil Scott comparing notes today. RIP both. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3hCQcrfg28

Some our these comments are very unessary as well as uneeded if you dont have anything good to say about his death then dont comment at all keep them to yourself you dont know him and you only heard about him so therefore who are you to say those things about him or argue the fact that he was loved and care by many people let that be…

  98. Donna Peters says:

My deepest sympathy to the family and the friends of such a young man that was obviously loved by many.I am a mother and can not even begin to imagine agony his Mom is going thru as she lives her worst nightmare.I just hope and pray that his friends and any one else can learn from this horrible tragedy,I just see way to many of our young kids dieing these days.God Bless

Danqq, this is still so sadd. I didnt even know him, but condolences to family && friends. RIP CHILLY BAD AZZ. You may be qone, but nobody’s ever qonna forqet a real dude like you.

  100. PC Native says:

Ya know I didn’t know this young man but his passing had quite an impact on a great deal of people in this county. To see the negative comments not even a week after his passing makes me sick! My father passed away in November ’09 due to a massive heart attack in his sleep. If anyone had made a remark that my dad deserved to die because of the bad diet & smoking habit he had – I’d be ready to kill someone. You jerks don’t realize it’s the same thing – regardless of their choices on earth, when they’re gone they leave behind family & friends that are hurting & struggling to deal with that pain. To his loved ones that had to read the ignorance that was left in comments in this thread – I am so sorry you had to endure that along with losing him. Also I have yet to read where any investigation or arrest had come from the person who hit him. Why is nothing being done?

The people that are saying oh why do we care about one less thug or it was bound to happen or hes a bad person who cares that he died (not exact words) that is really screwed up. I know a lot of people that have got a lot of charges that does not mean they deserve to die. My mom died and she had lots of charges that doesnt make her a bad person.
