Dana Marie Oleske, 35, was riding her 2004 Honda Shadow north on I-95, in Palm Coast, when she crashed in the emergency median after attempting a passing maneuver Sunday evening. She is in critical condition.

Oleske was riding in the center lane when she approached Dawn Borrelli of Palm Coast, who was at the wheel of a 2007 Chevy Suburban. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Oleske was attempting to pass Borrelli by moving to the left, or the inside lane.

Oleske’s Honda struck the Suburban’s left-rear as Oleske was carrying out the maneuver, sending the motorcycle veering off to the west, where the vehicle slid into the emergency lane and ejected Oleske, who is from Aurora, Ill.

Borrelli pulled off after the collision, FHP reports. Oleske was flown to Halifax hospital’s trauma unit in critical condition. The wreck took place some three miles south of the SR100 intersection. FHP says it’s not clear whether Oleske was wearing a helmet. That uncertainty can be the case when a helmet is recovered at the scene, though authorities can’t be sure whether it was actually being worn at the time of the wreck.

FHP also notes that a determination of whether alcohol was or was not involved in the wreck, so far as Oleske is concerned, was pending. No alcohol was involved in so far as Borrelli is concerned. She was wearing a seat belt.

Oleske is the first serious victim of Bike Week 2013 on Flagler County roads. The wreck took place at 7:40 p.m.

She was not wearing a helmet and it was a 2007 honda shadow. It also was not her bike. Research makes a big difference when writing stories… Prayers to her and her family in this tragic time.

Palm Coaster, between the verified information provided by FHP and the undocumented, rather snidely toned information provided by an anonymous commenter, we’ll still rely on FHP first, pending more documented information. Thanks.

FlaglerLive – many friends and family are reading this article, thanks for keeping it classy. Wish more news sites did as much and wish more people had the restraint and maturity to keep snideness and negativity to themselves when it comes to a human’s life (Amanda).

I was about 200 yards from the wreck site; sat in traffic for nearly an hour and watched the helicopter come and pick her up. The bumper on the Suburban had a pretty nasty dent in it. If she hit this vehicle from behind, while they were both going forward, she had to have been hauling a**…

    praying for a speedy recovery.

Everyone always tells auto drivers to be on the look-out. This type of reckless biker should not be on the road! Bikers, YOU need to ride responsibly, look twice, and stop weaving too!

    • Dale says:

Why do you assume she was “driving recklessly”? Were you there? Did you see her driving recklessly? There is no report that states such. Simply states she was attempting a passing maneuver. Dana is in critical condition and all you can do is slam her? It was an ACCIDENT. The bumper on the van can be replaced. OUCH, you did not witness the accident either. Who is to say the driver of the van didn’t stop abruptl?I think a human life is more important that worrying over a dented bumper.. What ever the case, Dana is in critical condition and needs prayers right now, not judgement.

Dana! I love you mama! Always have, always will despite our falling out. You are one of the best friends a person really could have with a heart of gold. We ALL love you and you are in our thoughts and prayers daily during this time. I LOVE YOU HUNNY. I’m trying to smile through the tears knowing you will make it through this!
