The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office is warning Flagler County residents that they’re being targeted by scammers who claim to be awarding prizes on behalf of Reader’s Digest.

Earlier this month, a Flagler County resident reported receiving a letter notifying him he was a finalist in a Reader’s Digest sweepstakes drawing that would be worth $500,000, according to the sheriff’s office. In addition, the consumer was sent a check and asked to call to activate the check. The check, according to the letter, was to assist the consumer in the payment of insurance and administrative fees on the half million dollar prize.

The intent of the scam was to obtain the consumer’s financial information, such as a checking account number, and then be able to access any funds contained in that account.

“Consumers should be alert to these types of scams. Be wary of responding to sweepstakes notifications or prize winnings that come through the mail or from a telephone call,” said Flagler County Sheriff Don Fleming.

Never give out your personal information including financial accounts and your Social Security number.

“Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably isn’t legitimate,” the Sheriff said.

Anyone who is concerned they may have been the target of a scam should contact the Sheriff’s Office at 386/313-4911.
