Three Hurt, One Critical in Two-Vehicle Wreck on U.S. 1 and Wellfield Grade in Palm Coast

Three people were hospitalized, one of them in critical condition, following a two-vehicle wreck on U.S. 1 and Wellfield Grade in Palm Coast just before 5 p.m. today. Wellfield Grade is a short distance north of Palm Coast Parkway.

The wreck shut down both northbound lanes of U.S. 1 from Palm Coast Parkway north. It reduced the southbound lanes in the area to one as Florida Highway Patrol investigators worked the scene in heavy rain, and Roger’s Towing cleared it.

The wreck involved a black Chevrolet Sonic and a gray Mitsubishi Galant, both owned by local residents. There were two women in each car. Both care were northbound. According to a Florida Highway Patrol investigator at the scene, the preliminary investigation indicates that the Sonic had slowed down to make a U-turn and head south where U.S. 1 crosses Wellfield Grade. The Mitsubishi slammed into the left-rear of the Sonic, sending the Sonic spinning. It’s not clear if the Galant went airborne, but it ended up on its roof.

Flagler County Fire Flight, the emergency helicopter, was requested by first responders at the scene, but the helicopter could not take flight because of bad weather. The victim in critical condition was transported by ground to Halifax hospital in Daytona Beach. Two other victims were transported to Florida Hospital Flagler, where non-trauma victims are treated. One of the occupants was a child, the investigator said. It wasn;t clear whether the child was among those hurt.

Charges are pending, the investigator said.

The Palm Coast Fire Department, Flagler County Fire Rescue and the Palm Coast Fire Police, along with the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office and FHP, all responded to the scene.

Flats flyer —you have no idea of the value Fireflight has to the county. Fireflight has performed hundreds of lifesaving evacs., has saved hundreds of acres from burning, has assisted the sheriffs office on many crime investigation’s and missing persons. Water rescues, wildfire recon, mapping, I could go on and on. Please do your homework BEFORE you post.

Flatsflyer – let’s hope you’re never in an accident where a quick response by air could save the life of one of your family or friends. You may not know it, but visibility was down to near zero in a couple of the storms that passed through Flagler County this afternoon. Better the chopper stayed on the ground a while rather than adding to the list of casualties itself.

    Speeders!!
I hear from house located near PC Parkway and Clubhouse Drive and also Florida Park Drive, that whether are motorcycles or cars the thunderous sound of engines roaring like were in the Nascar International Speedway in Daytona, totally disregarding the speed limit with obliviousness to life and property. This issue gets worse starting Friday early evening and or any weekday mostly at night. We would all benefit for law enforcement patrolling more often this area during specially weekend evenings. Really concerns me the the speed and will blow my mind the day I will hear a crash after the sound of breaks.

I saw this accident yesterday as rescue was treating the victim. The child was in the Galant and proof again that car seats save lives! Little girl about a year old and not a scratch on her, thank God! The one critical was the driver of the Sonic.
