Donald Trump’s loutish campaign for the US presidency has left most of the world – excluding, perhaps, Russian President Vladimir Putin and his European populist allies, like France’s Marine Le Pen – confused and aghast. Indeed, it is difficult for anyone to assess not only what Trump would do as President, but also which racial or religious minority, or foreign country, he holds in greatest contempt.
Name virtually any group or country, and you can bet Trump has insulted it. He has called Mexican immigrants to the US “criminals” and “rapists.” He has proposed banning all Muslims from entering the US. He has flung sexist invective at professional women, such as the political pundit Megyn Kelly, who have the temerity to stand up to him, and has called others “dogs” and “fat slobs.” He has sneered at America’s European and Asian allies, and blamed China for many of America’s economic woes.
Japan has particular reason to be unsettled by “The Donald’s” incendiary rhetoric, which has the potential to do lasting damage. At one moment, he treats Japan as a freeloader, unnerving Japan’s citizens about the state of our core security alliance with the US. At the next, he says that he would not think twice about Japan (and South Korea) becoming a nuclear-weapon state, feeding fears that today’s arms race in Asia might escalate beyond conventional weapons. Then he backpedals, claiming the words were fabricated by the media.
Under ordinary circumstances, the world could dismiss the ignorant rabble-rousing of a populist like Trump, whose campaign would remain a fringe affair. Yet Trump has so far captured the largest share of Republican Party primary voters. And, at this late date in the campaign, it seems highly improbable that the party will find its way back to sanity and produce a reasonable candidate for the election in November. In other words, Japan and the rest of the world ignore Trump at their own peril.
Republicans – indeed, all Americans – must understand the risks to global stability, and even peace, that could accompany a presidential campaign that becomes a Trump-produced spectacle of incendiary demagogy. And that could happen. Trump’s campaign is now managed by one of the most cynical – and most effective – operatives in the business: Paul Manafort, whose repackaging efforts in 2010 duped Ukrainians into thinking that Viktor Yanukovych, whom they eventually overthrew in a bloody revolution, was a democrat.
The impact in Japan, and across Asia, of Trump’s vision of a nuclear-armed Japan is a striking example of how his muddled jingoism can unsettle political discourse. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has lately been undertaking modest reforms to Japan’s defense posture, aimed at ensuring that in the event of some regional crisis, Japan’s Self-Defense Forces could come to the aid of our allies – in particular, the US. Some Japanese, however, view the reforms with concern, fearing that the peaceful Japan of the last seven decades will suddenly revert to the militaristic Japan of the 1930s.
Trump’s inflammatory rhetoric has helped to take these fears to the next level, with some opponents of Abe’s defense reforms detecting, they believe, the germ of some secret conspiracy with the US to turn Japan into a nuclear-weapon state. Of course, such fear mongering will attract only the most gullible. But given the need to reassure the Japanese public that Abe’s reforms are truly what he says they are – that is, modest changes that will allow Japan to deepen its alliance ties – Trump’s intervention is the height of irresponsibility.
Beyond undermining core political alliances, Trump seems prepared to undo much of the progress that has been made in deepening America’s economic relationships, not only with Japan, but also with the rest of the world. Abe has taken enormous political risks at home in embracing the Trans-Pacific Partnership, aimed at building a rules-based order for trade and investment among a dozen countries on both sides of the Pacific. Other leaders, including US President Barack Obama, have done the same. Yet Trump seems willing to oppose that stance, in order to stoke voters’ anger and maintain their support.
Of course, the real question is how deeply held Trump’s ideas are among ordinary Americans. Is it possible that a substantial bloc of Americans today really wants to pull up the drawbridges and embrace isolationism?

Another foreigner that has no business commenting on American politics. Maybe she’s upset because Trump said he would bring jobs back from Japan.
Pierre Tristam says
Veteran, you have no more, and no less, business commenting on American politics than your neighbor, a guy in Nebraska, an undocumented immigrant two streets over, a gal in Terra del Fuego, or, in this case, Ms. Koike. You can debate her politics of course–they’re not all that savory, and I’m not referring to her opinions on Trump but to her nativism back in Japan, where she is a sort of Japanese version of Trump nationalism–but let’s not be so close-minded as to think, like the late Scalia, that foreign ideas don’t exist and have no bearing on who and what we are about.
David Boccabello says
Another liberal writing lies…Trump said “many illegal immigrants are criminals” and that has proven to be true…the article writer says Trump said “all immigrants are criminals”…liar, liar pants on fire. And, the rest of the article does the same thing to other things Trump has said…I do hate a liar and she is one.

I often wonder how many Trump supporters have actually read his entire website and proposed policies. Of those who have read the site, I wonder how many truly understand the shirt and long term economic and foreign policy implications of his proposals. Trump is a demagogue who has conned 1/3 of US voters into buying his brand. Wake up America, he is not the solution. The USA is not a business, hotel, casino, beauty pageant, or reality tv show.
Steve Robinson says
And the nonsense, spewed by both Trump and Clinton, that they will revive American manufacturing and bring jobs back from … wherever, is a pipe dream, and both parties need to stop saying it. Good-paying manufacturing jobs will never return to the US for the simple reason that labor-intensive manufacturing no longer exists in the developed world, and is a dinosaur even where it does exist in developing countries. Japan has shot itself in the foot by having more and more workers drawing paychecks for the fewer and fewer hours it takes to make a product, be it a car, a TV or a robot that is replacing those very same workers. The U.S. needs to invest in–and that means both private and public dollars–cutting-edge medical technology, green energy and 21st century infrastructure, and it needs to educate its young people to fill the jobs in those fields, and welcome immigrants from anywhere who have similar dreams for their and their children’s future.

Veteran. . . there is no such thing as isolated “American” politics. Yes, the earth is round, and especially in this global economy, jobs market and body politic, everything our country does effects all other countries on the planet to some extent. When Trump talks about Japan having a nuclear weapon, of course we SHOULD all want to know about the thinking of Japanese citizens on this and any other relevant subject ..
BTW, most of our outsourced jobs have gone to China and India. . . NOT Japan. This from statisticbrain.com:
Total number of U.S. jobs outsourced in 2015 2,382,000
Number of jobs outsourced to China since 2001 3,200,000
Number of California jobs lost to outsourcing since 2001 560,000
Percent of CFO’s surveyed who said their firm was currently offshore outsourcing 38 %
Percent of CFO’s who favored India for outsourcing 26 %
Percent of CFO’s who favored China for outsourcing 18 %

The only way to fix America is vote out all members of Congress that have been in office over 12 years. If we don’t do that, we get what we have a corrupt bunch of Congressional members that are living high off the tax payers money while taxpayers the poor and working middle class, die a slow death. So don’t complain about the way it is in America we the voters share a lot of the blame.

I’m paraphrasing here: Trump is living proof that you cannot underestimate the intelligence of the American public.
On the bright side, if he does win the golden age of political comedy will return.
Outsider says
Whale Killers, you are only partially correct. Four Americans were killed in the Benghazi attack. As you said, Ambassador Stevens was killed in the initial attack on the American diplomatic mission in Benghazi, along with communications specialist Sean Smith. There were two former Special Forces personnel, who were employed by the CIA that were killed defending the CIA annex from a second attack. They were killed by direct hits from mortars, fired allegedly, according to Clinton and Obama, by some run of the mill protesters who just happened to be carrying mortar tubes with them, and were, coincidentally, extremely proficient at targeting them. If it weren’t for the actions of these brave men and others, dozens would have been killed in the attacks. As bad as it was, it could have been much worse, hence the whole “Keep moving folks, nothing to see here” attitude of the administration.
Ws says
You liberal writers should be talking about what a mess the current president has left our country in. How come you haven’t been elaborating on that over the last 8 years? That being said it is amazing all the fear mongering being put out about trump by both demacrats and the GOP. Now this hit piece also its her opinion and nothing more like -” which racial or religious minority, or foreign country, he holds in greatest contempt” ive not heard or seen contempt but his opinions on ILLEGALS , a “religion” that condones the most vile things one can think of. He has NOT as is said -He has called Mexican immigrants to the US “criminals” and “rapists.” He has proposed banning all Muslims from entering the US.” – HE NEVER said mexican immigrant but ILLEGALS as criminals (redundant I know). As for the banning of muslims what the hell is wrong with that especially ones from lands that follow a strict version of that cult? As for Japan – “The impact in Japan, and across Asia, of Trump’s vision of a nuclear-armed Japan is a striking example of how his muddled jingoism can unsettle political discourse.” Why should we America take the cost of protecting japan with our Nukes? We can no longer take on the role and cost of being every Nations protectorate.

I feel like the proverbial kid in the candy store, so much and so little time. I’ll pick on Pierre Tristan comments and characterization of Koike’s piece “a Japanese version of Trump nationalism”, that sentence send me to a second reading and still don’t see it. She comes across as a middle of the road politician who wants to maintain the status quo that some will describe as continuation of Pax Americana which means paradoxically in America’s interest. A Japanese nationalist would be fuming at the mouth over dropping not one but two nuclear bombs which we are now finding out was to send a signal to the Russian to stop moving their armies eastward. if she were a Japanese nationalist she would be aghast at the rise of China’s naval aspirations of a transoceanic navy and a need for rearmament. It may be that Mr. Tristan knows more about Ms. Koike that would substantiate his comment, this article, however does not.
To those talking about Benghazi I frankly don’t know what they trying to probe, is it Obama and Clinton are somewhat in cahoots with the Pakistanis in this debacle? Stevens was working for or with the CIA in an arms deals that the reason he had gone to Benghazi, something went wrong at the meeting that upset the Pakistanis and their proxies. To me this was one of the many screw ups that we having difficult dealing with. But if republicans want to continue exploring this incident how about calling the head of the CIA to testify (I believe it was Leon Panetta at the time) or the Secretary of Defense and make those hearings public.
To the neo-know nothing, remnants of the American Party and the Dixiecrats, I would say that other than the native Americans that were here 10 to 12 million of which 250,000 remained where all was said and done (Yes, I know about small pox and let say 5 millions die of decease, what happened to the rest?) The rest of us are foreigners, our main religion were created by a middle eastern, our economic structure by a Scott, our political system by a Frenchman and an Englishment.
Finally, during antebellum american Polk invaded Mexico because he wanted to turn it into a slave state, cooler head prevail and he did not take Mexico City, but we kept half its territory of this the Republican Party has no historical reference, after all many of its members believe the earth is 3000 years old, so now they want to kick out Hispanics from lands we stole from them. Interesting, no?

Republicans keep saying the country is in a mess. Well, the economy is slow but strong, the stock market is up so are housing starts, unemployment is down and millions of Americans who could not get insurance before are now insured.
We have a nuclear treaty with Iran, which is better than going to war with them and we are working with the rest of the world, as much as Republicans will allow it, on climate change. I fail to see that we are in a mess.
On the other hand, the Republican front runner is an offensive loud mouth with a string of failed businesses, four bankruptcies, too many extra marital affairs to count, who has insulted blacks, women, gays, latinos, the handicapped and is viewed with disgust by most of the rest of the world. A man who has used foreign workers to build his properties and has his products made in Mexico.
If Republicans had put America first and worked with the President we could be doing even better. Instead they have chosen the path of obstructionism and spent their time trying to regulate women’s vaginas, criticizing the educational system, without offering improvements and calling poor Americans lazy. They haven’t been able to come up with an alternative to the Affordable Healthcare law although they can’t wait to do away with it. In the face of overwhelming scientific and international agreement they persist in denying climate change and have done nothing to reverse the flow of jobs overseas. The model states for their policies, Kansas and Louisiana are nearly bankrupt because of their policies. They talk about illegal immigration a lot but have yet to come up with a single practical proposal to stem the flow.
In short what have Republicans done for America?

Trump is clearly a misogynistic, xenophobic, bigoted, loudmouthed buffoon. His proven ignorance of economics, government and world affairs would be an embarrassment to an average high school student. He is unqualified by temper, demeanor, intellect or experience to lead this nation. He is the most disliked man in America, and is widely ridiculed by our foreign friends and allies. I simply cannot comprehend the blissfully ignorant mindset of his followers to think of this truly despicable man as presidential material.
Fortunately for America, common sense, sanity and intelligence will prevail and Hillary will clean his clock in the general election.

This sounds like the xenophobia (jingoism) the author accuses Trump and Anericans of.
Not to mention — yes, I’m mentioning it, ok, she misquotes and mis characterizes Trump’s words on illegal immigration.
Whatever we in the USA have done welcoming so many legal immigrants in our history just wasn’t done to that extent elsewhere especially in Japan. And for this author to condemn any candidate for wanting a legal sovereign nation, she should read up on our history re immigration and contrast it with hers.
I’ve tried very hard to not use cliches but the

The reason people all over the world are much more concerned about a Trump presidency than a Clinton presidency is that Trump has deeply offended millions of people all over the world and his ideas on foreign policy sound as though he were playing game of Monopoly. Trump’s bullying, blow hard, seat of the pants style is extremely dangerous.
The world of international diplomacy requires great experience, an in depth understanding of historical context and cultural/religious motivations, faultless communication skills, tremendous patience and insight and a myriad of other traits and skills Trump does not have and does not seem to care about cultivating.
A Trump presidency would spell complete disaster for our country and for our planet!

I agree that Trump needs to clarify his foreign policy ideas and refrain from shoot-from-the-hip presentations. However, foreign observers should understand that exaggeration and provocative statements are his political style and so far those approaches are serving him well. At least Trump is putting some fresh ideas out there even if he lacks diplomatic finesse. Look at Hillary’s campaign web site….Her foreign policy sections are full of platitudes and vagueness, firmly rooted in the status quo — which apparently means more open-ended military action in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, and who knows where else.. She says nothing clearcut about the TransPacific trade agreement — only a generality about supporting “Asian partnerships.” I don’t like the phrase “America First’ but I would like to see the U.S. move away from policing the world. We can’t afford it and we shouldn’t be committing American troops and American-financed mercenaries to intervene in other nations’ civil wars. We should work toward phasing out at least half of our overseas bases. One of the most bizarre statements on Hillary’s website is that she favors efforts to stabilize Libya & Yemen — this from the Secretary of State who worked so hard to oust Quadaffi even as he was beginning to mellow in his relations with the U.S. Now Libya is ripe for an ISIS takeover.

I’d like to address Just Me he raises a key question “…what should we do?”. The past is behind us and, alas we cannot change it, personally no one wishes that we could more than me.
America gave me, as it has to millions of immigrants, a second chance, I want her to succeed and to prosper in this century, because in spite of all our faults we’re still humanity’s best hope. The biggest problem that we face are all of an internal nature. It is easy to look around the world and blame just about everything everything on the foreigners that don’t understand us. Isis is a painful very annoying problem, Russia would be Russia, China wants to be the big man of the future, unless humans in an apocalyptic moment decide to go nuclear, we can outmaneuver these guys. What we can not do is outmaneuver ourselves.
The top challenge we face is political ( and psychological) alienation, the president much to might delight and surprise brought it up in his last State of the Union speech this endear him to second only to his superb, emotional, speech in the church in South Carolina. We have to do much better in making our population feel that they belong and matter. A lot can be done with our electioneering system, and even more by either a constitutional convention or by passing a constitutional amendment requiring that the constitution should be up for revision every 20 years.
Second is income inequality, this title frankly is inadequate because the underlining problem is that capitalism has failed us. While I think a more social oriented approach would help, it has the slippery slope component to it and I just don’t know how to get around it.
Finally race, which I put in third place because is easier to solve than the other two. When I go into my diatribes with the t.v. my wife often turns around and asks were we the only ones? Of course the answer is no, but others have done much better in rehabilitating themselves. And as an american I want us to heal this open wound. Mrs. Clinton has propose a program of $100 billions (not sure of the amount) to invest in poor areas, education, housing, etc. I am all for it, but the most important part component is missing the speech, the mea culpa moment, the atonement, “What we did was horrible, and it was even more so because we knew what we were doing (read the personal correspondence of Washington and Jefferson), we had a civil war that should have been a moment of reflection and instead we continued to make deals and went into 100 years of apartheid. To truly starts renovating ourselves I propose a Slavery Museum to be constructed in the National Mall” O.K. a speech writer I am not but hopefully you get the idea of where I’m going with this.
Just Me, to get to the Hispanic part of your question, which I’m very grateful you asked, is not to go back let’s go forward understanding the the “mexicans” are part of our history they are and will be part of the future. I believe it was President Clinton who put succinctly, we are going to have to share the future.

BUT the truth is that Trump and Rs in general are not the vile things he thinks. Rs ,Conservative’s Constitutionalists or the right are FOR equal rights for ALL under the constitution NOT special ones for any. The rise of Trump is two fold one YES the result of Rs but because the GOP is week in defending its once held principles of Federalism and the Constitutional principals of Limited federal Government and the rights of States, local government and the people over the Federal government.the rise of trump is also from the ds and their abuse of federal powers and takeover of powers that should be the Congress and local governments BUT again the Rsare partly to blame as they NEVER stand up to the left or progressive’s in their own ranks. The GOP only stands against those who look to the Constitution for how this once great Republic should be Governed.
