Old Kings Road north of Town Center Boulevard closed shortly before 2 this afternoon, and was likely to remain closed for about an hour, following a wreck that required the response of firefighters to ensure that the woodline would not catch fire.
It’s one of those wrecks that could have been much worse, and that was entirely preventable: a man driving his Cadillac north, about a mile north of the Town center Boulevard intersection, was rounding a curve when he suddenly saw a vehicle trying to pass another illegally, in the curve. The Cadillac driver swerved left, straight into the woodline. The car smashed through thick brush, and the man was fortunate to escape hitting any solid trunks or utility poles, and escape injury. But the Cadillac was severely damaged and appeared to have caught on fire briefly.
Flagler County Sheriff’s deputies were able to catch at least one of the drivers, who was pulled over just south of Town Center Boulevard.
Because of the Cadillac’s final stop in the thickness of combustible brush, Flagler County Fire Rescue and Palm Coast Fire Department units remained at the scene, ensuring that the vehicle would not be the source of a fire, until it was to be removed by a wrecker.
