Notably: Joe Louis won the World Heavyweight Championship on this day in 1937, knocking out James Braddock in the eighth round in front of 60,000 people at Comiskey Park. The event garnered top of the fold, front-page coverage in The New York Times:  “Under the impact of Louis’s terrific right-hand punch to the jaw, Braddock, battered, bruised and bleeding, crashed limply to the canvas in the center of the ring to be counted out when the session had progressed only 1 minute 10 seconds.” Louis would remain champion until his retirement in 1949. Since we’re on sports, it was also on this day in the 1986 World Cup that Argentina’s Diego Maradona, in one of the most blatantantly fraudulent moments in the history of the game, punched a goal with his hand in a match against England. Just as fraudulent was what the vulgar and future (now late) cokehead called it “The hand of god.”

That is, the rise of cancel culture seems much less important and ominous than the rise of sellout culture. More and more people at the top of our social hierarchy appear willing to do anything, for anyone, as long as the money is good enough. This isn’t a purely partisan issue, although sellout culture may be somewhat more prevalent on the right than the left. It remains extraordinary, given Donald Trump’s bellowing about America First, how many members of his inner circle — including Michael Flynn, his national security adviser, and Rudy Giuliani, his personal lawyer — have been credibly accused of, in some cases have been convicted of, or even confessed to serving as paid agents of despotic foreign governments.

—From Paul Krugman’s column, “What Is Golf’s Problem? Sellout Culture,” June 16, 2022.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way – in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only.

I am so happily stunned that this liberal gossip page actually printed this carton, I owe who ever allowed it a huge THANK YOU!!!!
There is a tiny % of Americans that are caring or focusing on the events of Jan 6 except for the liberals in our US congress. Obviously , President Trump not running again is so much more important than worrying about the highest inflation rate and the highest gas prices this country has seen in over 4o years, maybe ever. I guess when you control all 3 branch’s of government and your team has no answers, try to deflect. Based on polls, America is NOT accepting the distraction and will force a change of plans starting this November

  3. Laurel says

    June 22, 2022 at 2:31 pm

Deka: So you don’t care what happened on January 6th? Wow, that is deeply disturbing. I think that maybe you should be watching the witnesses’ testimonies, coming mostly from respectable, conservative Republicans You may learn something that is historically very important, and unprecedented.

I can live with the temporary gas prices; I cannot live with a loss of democracy in our country. As an Independent, I can tell you the current gas prices are not a diversion delivered by Democrats.

  4. Pierre Tristam says

    June 22, 2022 at 2:44 pm

Deka is missing the point. Gas prices are the convenient if irrelevant distraction, at least to those for whom a coup or the lynching of a vice president is not an issue. High-priced fuel for thoughtlessness.

  5. oldtimer says

    June 22, 2022 at 9:16 pm

Jan 6 was a bad day for this country….. so was what happened in Portland , Seattle, Philly and a bunch of other cities that burned during the “peacefull ” protests of 2020. Does anyone condone that violence? Bad things seem to be accepted as the norm now

  6. Pierre Tristam says

    June 23, 2022 at 12:54 pm

That red herring rotted long ago.

  7. Deka says

    June 23, 2022 at 12:56 pm

No Deka is NOT missing anything. The Jan 6 “waste of time” is a distraction that democrats are using to avoid dealing with highest inflation in 4o years and $5.00 gas prices.
When did Pence get lynched??? I must have missed that.

  8. Laurel says

    June 23, 2022 at 5:11 pm

Deka: Pence missed the lynching by 40 feet. You missed a lot of testimony by watching Fox Entertainment. It’s a shame that anyone who thinks that a crowd breaking into the United States Capital, with the destruction, violence and death involved is a “waste of time.” Sorry to bother you.

  9. Deka says

    June 23, 2022 at 8:33 pm

40 feet??? You forgot to mention the locked doors and police security with guns, the security guards were the only ones with guns so please don’t be so dramatic. What death are you referring to??? The women that was shot and killed by a security guard??? Actually, I work for a living so I don’t have time to watch this joke of a Jam 6 committee or Fox entertainment. If bumbiling biden didn’t raise the gas prices so high or cause inflation to be so high, maybe I could take a break from work to watch this foolishness but I have bills to pay.

  10. Laurel says

    June 24, 2022 at 2:25 pm

We all have bills to pay, but we should also take the time to see what really happened around, and before, January 6th. You can find the hearings, in full, on YouTube. Quite the eye opener. All the witnesses, and the two main questioners are respected Republicans. In fact, I think that it is the only chance that Republicans regain respect of reasonable Americans.

I find it interesting that you have such a strong opinion while not taking the time to consume any information. And as far as drama goes, one question mark at the end of a sentence should suffice.

  11. Sherry says

    June 26, 2022 at 8:49 pm

    Thank you Laurel!

I would also point out the FACT that gasoline inflation is “world wide”. . . NOT limited to the US! Therefore, NOT the fault of Democrats or President Biden! Especially since those very dirty fossil companies that freely pollute our environment and contribute massively to our “climate change crisis” are GOUGING us and making record profits!!!

  12. Sherry says

    June 26, 2022 at 8:57 pm

So sorry Laurel. . . looks as if you have been pulled into an endless debate with a brainwashed cult member who gave up not only the ability to “get educated and think independently” but, their “moral compass as well”. Unfortunately FACTS simply do not matter to them!

Trying to educate the likes of deka is surely a waste of your valuable time.

  13. Deka says

    June 27, 2022 at 7:34 am

I hate it when facts get in the way of an emotional plea and whine. I agree it’s a world wide issue and guess what, the USA has the ability to solve it but, bumbiling biden and company refuse to look at reality. A simple solution from a simple man,me, the bumbiling biden team has to drop all the new regulations it put in play to stop the oil from getting to refiners and allow the refiners to do their job. Also, bumbiling binden needs to tell the financial community that yes, green energy is where we want to go HOWEVER, we are no where close to that and we need to rely on the “dirty Fossil companies” here in the USA and not go begging to Saudi Arabia, yes, thats where your hero is off to, Venezuela, and the other countries that dont care about clean air and water!! Please tell me why its ok for bumbiling biden to beg those countries for oil and gas but not here in the USA???? By the way, have you noticed France ,Germany and the rest of Europe are now going to use coal, that is by far the dirtiest fossils fuels of all.
Those countries where supposedly so far ahead of the USA with their conversation to green energy, OPPS.

  14. Deka says

    June 27, 2022 at 7:43 am

Laurel, I never said I was not interested in what happened on Jan 6, I am for sure. What I do not agree with at all is this “mob was going to destroy this great country” as you lib democrats are trying to make a case for. The reason I know that is there were NO weapons unless you consider a flag a weapon. The only weapon that has been proven is the security guard that killed an unarmed women!!! As far as the hearing, if it was “balanced” and the Republican Party could send who they wanted on the committee, I would have more of an interest in what actually took place. However, you dems would not allow that which is against all norms and the dems chose which republicans would be “allowed”. The reason, your democrats only wanted 1 side to be represented, pure politics!!! I am still stunned how your whole party is afraid of 1 Man that may or may not run again, simply stunning

  15. Pierre Tristam says

    June 27, 2022 at 8:05 am

Deka is misinformed, starting with the knife Ms. Babbitt was carrying and the list of weapons others carried. What has always been defined as weapons is now being re-fabricated as style accessories by the same people who transfigured Jan. 6 into a joyful, peaceful patriotic display of free expression. Between boundless cynicism and the English language’s Orwellian gang rape since that day, there’s no sense attempting to correct the record with the rapists. Not here, anyway, where we still abide by the relative conventional understanding of English. We do not speak Qananism.

  16. Deka says

    June 27, 2022 at 1:05 pm

Did you actually read the news article from NPR that you cited or just read the headline. No mention of a knife but perhaps she had something in her pocket , the article mention, pepper spray, baseball bats ( i did see 1 or 2 in video clips but they were outside) and I mentioned, poles carrying flags. Not really the weapons needed to overthrew the government but I guess we live in different worlds if you think that would have worked. The reason I am making fun of you is clearly, there was no intent to overthrow the USA government with a pocket knife, a few baseball bats and flag poles. There was an intent to protest what took place. Do I agree they were there to protest, HELL YES but I thought every American has that right, I guess unless you are a conservatives since nothing happened during the summer of love protests.
