Thursday Briefing: Dorothy Singer Trial, Palm Coast Ironies, Inspired Mic at Europa, Lifeguard Challenge

a1a palm coast billboard — As ironic as it gets. This billboard recently went up on A1A in the Hammock and caught the attention of Dennis Clark, who heads the Scenic A1A Committee. ‘We appreciate that Palm Coast is named Tree City USA for the 13th year in a row, but there are a few ironies with this billboard,’ Clark wrote: This billboard is on our National Scenic Byway, A1A just south of Shady Lane – in the Hammock, not in Palm Coast, and facing in the opposite direction from Palm Coast. There are no trees shown on the billboard graphic. The graphic is reminiscent of south Florida with Flamingos and Hibiscus. Only one Flamingo was reported in this area according to E-Bird – [in September] 2004 at Matanzas Inlet as a presumed storm-driven vagrant. Palm Coast has very few billboards to block their trees, so they had to use ours. The fortunate thing is that the Gun Show graphics, that have been up for a year, were replaced by this one.’ The billboard, as it makes clear in its ‘paid for by Lamar’ signature, is a product of Lamar, which controls the billboard, and was not commissioned or approved by the city. Mayor Milissa Holland said she knew nothing about it until the chairman of the county commission informed her about it. (Debbie and Dennis Clark)

In Court: Opening arguments at 9 a.m. in the first-degree murder trial of Dorothy Singer, accused of shooting her husband five times and burying him in the family’s backyard at its west-Flagler home in 2017. Singer is present, after refusing to appear in pre-trials. Her lawyer had made a motion to have Circuit Judge Dennis Craig disqualified, arguing that Craig has made statements prejudicial to the defense in pre-trials. Craig denied it Monday. Thursday-Saturday: The 2018 Coquina Cup Lifeguard Challenge, including lifeguard, swimming and other competitions, is scheduled over the next three days from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day between South 4th and South 6th Street in Flagler Beach.

The Flagler County Art League hosts its annual picnic (weather permitting) at Hershel King Park off Colbert Lane, from 4 p.m. on. Bring a dish to share, and $5 per person for soft drinks and barbecue. RSVP at 386/986-4668.

The Inspired Mic, Palm Coast’s most daring and unpredictable open mic event, is scheduled for its monthly edition at The New Europa, European Village. Each month some of the most creative, innovative performances a person could ever hope to experience take place at The Inspired Mic. 14 presenters each month pull out slices of talent and genius to entertain the audience. Each presenter gets 7 minutes to present on a very eclectic blend of their genius. The New Europa at European Village, 101 Palm Harbor Parkway, Unit 101, Palm Coast. Doors open at 6 p.m. and presenters begin at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $10.50 advance, available at theinspiredmicus.com, or $15 at the door. Tickets include one drink (beer, wine, soda, tea, water), and entry into a drawing with a prize of $50 cash or a $75 gift certificate to The New Europa. The April event was a sell out so please purchase your tickets in advance.

Ferry Service Resumes at Fort Matanzas: The National Park Service is pleased to announce that our ferry to Fort Matanzas National Monument will officially resume service on May 14th at 9:30am. For the last two years our ferry service and dock system at Fort Matanzas were severely damaged, first by Hurricane Matthew in October 2016, and again in September 2017 by Hurricane Irma. Repairs to both ferry boats and dock system have recently been completed, inspected, and service to the fort is resuming. We appreciate the patience and good will we received from our visitors who often travel great distances to visit St. Augustine and Fort Matanzas National Monument. We look forward to your next visit with us.
