Flagler Sheriff Warns Public of Caller Impersonating a Cop in Warrant Scam

The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office has received several reports about suspicious phone calls involving a telephone scam.

Several residents have reported receiving a phone call from a male caller claiming to be a captain or lieutenant with the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office Warrant’s Division. When the subject calls, he states that there is an active warrant for their arrest and says the victim must pay a $1,000 fine. In one case, the caller told the complainant to obtain two $500 prepaid credit cards to give to the sheriff’s office. It is important to note that the sheriff’s office will not ask for payment over the phone.

Anyone who receives a telephone call of this nature should not give any personal information over the phone and should not send money, gift cards, cashier’s checks or prepaid cards. They are asked to contact the sheriff’s office or their local law enforcement agency immediately and provide as much information about the call to include the caller’s phone number.

Impersonating a law enforcement officer is a third-degree felony. Falsely impersonating an officer in the commission of a felony, as in this case, is a second-degree felony.

In May, Shaun Fuller, an employee with the city of Palm Coast, was arrested at city offices on charges that he impersonated an officer and used a blue light on his dashboard to pull people over. He was arrested on a Putnam County warrant after he was reported to have pulled a driver over in Palatka.
