For a growing number of students in Flagler Schools, the traditional classroom setting may not meet all of their needs. Fortunately for them, there’s iFlagler which is the school district’s virtual school. This week, Florida Virtual School (FLVS) named iFlagler the “Small District Franchise of the Year.”
iFlagler was established 6 years ago and since then has grown in popularity. Just a few years ago there were 300 half-credit enrollments. For the 2015-16 school year, there were 4,000 half-credit enrollments.
Students in grades 7-12 can take classes through iFlagler, either on a half-time or full-time setting. What sets the iFlagler model apart is that while the same rigorous curriculum is used as FLVS, local teachers teach the classes. In this blended model, our teachers meet face-to-face with the students at least every couple of weeks. This allows the educator and student to create an important partnership.
There are also labs on our middle and high school campuses allowing students to access iFlagler classes in addition to their work in traditional classroom settings.
Diane Dyer, Executive Director of Teaching and Learning for Flagler Schools, who oversees iFlagler says the award is proof “we have tremendous support from Superintendent Jacob Oliva, our School Board and Florida Virtual Schools.” Ms. Dyer also shares the message she sent teachers and staff who work with iFlagler. “We are now going for two years in a row so rest up!”
