A resident of Hunter’s Ridge, the sparse, isolated development straddling the Flagler-Volusia County line, found human remains while searching for his drone this morning, not far from his home on Ashford Lake Drive.
The remains were found in a “very heavily wooded area” in the 2700 block of Ashford Lake Drive, said Laura Williams, a spokesperson with the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office. “The medical examiner has taken it and believes that it is human.”
Very little is known about the remains, which are more like a remain: they’re limited to an item about the size of a hand, Williams said. She was not authorized to specify the part of the human body that was found, though it is likely to be a skull. The sex and age have not been determined, and therefore neither has its identity.
“We have a lot of work to do to figure out who it might be,” Williams said. “I’m told that there are no obvious signs of trauma. It’s apparently been out there at least a year or two.” It has also been bleached by the sun, suggesting that it had never been buried. No clothing or other items were found alongside it.
The item has been taken to the St. Johns Medical Examiner’s office for analysis, and may be transferred to another analysis lab in Gainesville.
In August, authorities found human remains at a construction site in the Hammock. Those remains were not tied to any missing-person case, nor were they determined to have been subject to foul play or trauma, though the identity of that person was never determined.
